CORE SUBJECTS

UNDERSTANDING CULTURE,
SOCIETY AND POLITICS

SOCIETY can be defined as a group of people who share a common economic, social,
and industrial'ociety can be defined as a group of people who share a common
economic, social, and industrialinfrastructure.

Politics is the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area,
especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to
achieve power.
MEDIA INFORMATION AND LITERACY

Empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is an important

prerequisite for fostering equitable access to information and knowledge and promoting
free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems.

Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media in
our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information - since it
empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information
providers, to critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users
and producer of information and media content.
GENERAL MATHEMATICS

The General Mathematics program aims to provide students with the knowledge of
mathematics in its breadth by drawing its courses from the department’s different
mathematical divisions: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics and
Actuarial Science. The program explores the various branches of mathematics and their
applications in the real world.

General Mathematics majors learn mathematic fundamentals, which include calculus,

linear algebra, and probability and statistics. In addition to acquiring basic mathematical
skills, students are free to explore the manifold areas of this discipline to gain exposure
to a variety of modern mathematical subjects such as mathematical analysis, abstract
algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics, numerical analysis, statistics and
actuarial science. Students select courses from the four categories of mathematical
focus offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to earn a Bachelor of
Science in General Mathematics.
STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

Probability and Statistics or also called Statistics and Probability are two related but
separate academic disciplines. Statistical analysis often uses probability distributions,
and the two topics are often studied together. However, probability theory contains
much that is mostly of mathematical interest and not directly relevant to statistics.

Statistics and probability are sections of mathematics that deal with data collection and
analysis. Probability is the study of chance and is a very fundamental subject that we
apply in everyday living, while statistics is more concerned with how we handle data
using different analysis techniques and collection methods. These two subjects always
go hand in hand and thus you can't study one without studying the other.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Physical science, the systematic study of the inorganic world, as distinct from the study
of the organic world, which is the province of biological science. Physical science is
ordinarily thought of as consisting of four broad areas: astronomy, physics, chemistry,
and the Earth sciences. Each of these is in turn divided into fields and subfields. This
article discusses the historical development—with due attention to the scope, principal
concerns, and methods—of the first three of these areas. The Earth sciences are
discussed in a separate article.
EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

Scientific research in the earth and life sciences is wide-ranging and relevant to current
issues. Earth and life sciences cover all aspects of life on earth such as the complex
and dynamic processes in solid earth, the oceans, the atmosphere, the natural world
and organisms, including humans.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Personal development covers activities that improve awareness and identity, develop
talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employability, enhance the
quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.

Is a lifelong process. It is a way for people to assess their skills and qualities, consider
their aims in life and set goals in order to realise and maximise their potential.
PE AND HEALTH

Health and physical education provides students with the knowledge and skills that will
enable them to achieve and maintain a physically active and healthful life, not only
during their time in school but for a lifetime. Health and physical education are integral
components of a balanced educational program. Children who are healthy and
physically active increase their chances of achieving to their highest academic potential
and are better able to handle the demands of today's hectic schedules.
