Acceptance

A WebQuest for 3rd Grade

Designed by

Lindsey Denton

Introduction
Acceptance is letting the situation be what it may be without trying to control or
change it. This is often hard to do, especially in difficult or uncomfortable situations.
We have to realize certain things are out of our hands and it is okay to let something
play out the way it is intended to. I believe when we find acceptance, we find a
peace within ourselves. It is important to learn acceptance at all ages, even as
children. In fact, the earlier this is learned, the better. Students will identify qualities
within themselves and others that make them unique and special. Students will
accept themselves and others for exactly who they are as individuals. It is important
to understand we are all different, but no one person is better than anyone else. We
all have amazing qualities that make each person truly special.

The Task
The intended learning outcome/goal of this assignment is to get students thinking on
a different level about themselves and others. Students will be able to write and
communicate about self-acceptance, wanting others to accept them and them
accepting others. At the end of the assignment, students will have an “All About Me
Book” explaining how they are unique, special individuals who are cherished and will
accomplish great things.

The Process
Over a 4 day period, we will take adequate time out of our day to review acceptance.

1. We will choose a book/books that best describes or relates to the

characteristic or trait we will be covering that day.
2. The book/books will be read to class then discussed as a group and/or with
partners.
3. Students will write and illustrate a page in their “All About Me Books” in
regards to the day’s topic.

The “All About Me Books” will be pre-made for students. They will need to have a
title page and 1-2 pages pertaining to each day’s topic.

Day 1: “I am unique because…”

Day 2: “I am special to my family because…”

Day 3: “I am a good friend because…”

Day 4: “My personal accomplishments are…”

4. Students will share their books with a few of the teachers chosen partners
and then students will have the option of sharing their book or an excerpt of
their book with the entire class. There will also be time for class discussion.
5. Then, as an additional option, a video clip can be viewed on acceptance,
bullying, kindness, etc.

Suggested books about acceptance:

 "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon

 "We're Different, We're the Same" by Bobbi Jane Kates
 "Elmer" by David McKee
 "Babushaka Baby Yaga" by Patricia Polacco
 "Three Cheers for Tacky" (there are several "Tacky" titles) by Helen Lester
 "Saint George and the Dragon" by Margaret Hodges
 "All the Places to Love" by Patricia MacLachlan
 "Won't Somebody Play with Me" by Steven Kellog
 "A Porcupine Named Fluffy" by Helen Lester

Conclusion
Acceptance of ourselves and others is an admirable quality to have. It makes a big
difference within ourselves and the lives of others when we make it a point to
embrace acceptance. It creates a good feeling when we make an effort to treat
ourselves and others with this act of kindness.
