FOREIGN BUYER BAN LINKED TO SOFTENING
OF THE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY MARKET

he much-hyped foreign-buyer-ban of
residential properties that came into
effect in October 2018 is being linked
with the softening of New Zealand’s residential
property market.
A Stats NZ report released on Thursday,
May 2 said that house sales to overseas buyers
dropped by 81 per cent in the March quarter
compared to the same time last year.
“Overseas people acquired just 0.6 per cent
of homes transferred in the first quarter of
2019, reflecting law changes in late 2018 that
introduced restrictions for overseas buyers,”
property statistics manager Melissa McKenzie
said.
Home transfers to people who didn’t hold
New Zealand citizenship or a resident visa fell
over 80 per cent in the March 2019 quarter
compared with the same quarter a year ago,
Stats NZ said today.
There were 204 home transfers to people
who didn’t hold NZ citizenship or a resident
visa in the March 2019 quarter, down 81 per
cent from 1,083 in the March 2018 quarter.
Total home transfers fell 3.5 per cent over the
same period.
Softening Auckland residential

However, that does not automatically means
that prospective first home buyers can easily get
into the property market as other factors such as
low affordability and tighter credit availability
continue to play a significant role.
Nevertheless, Auckland property market
continues to be a buyers’ market where indeed
buyers and more specifically first home buyers
are in a better position to shop around for a
better deal than what they could have got with
the same level of finances about three years ago.
“Listings are as high as they’ve ever been
for the last 10 years in Auckland so you’ve got
plenty of choices and it’s definitely a buyer’s
market you can shop around and to some extend
upgrade your location so I’d say it’s definitely a
buyer’s market,” Mr Davidson said.

ncredible India - the international tourism
campaign of the government of India to
promote tourism in the country – hosted
a road show in Auckland’s Cordis Hotel, on
Thursday, April 18, with an intention to target
the increasing number of resident New Zealand
travellers who travel overseas during winter
months.
It is notable that with the onset of winters
in May more Kiwis fly away, preferably for
warmer shores, outnumbering the total number
of visitors coming inland to New Zealand.
In May 2018 about 249,900 New Zealanders
headed overseas for travel, up 16,800 from
May 2017, with preferred destinations of the
United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK),
Fiji, along with our Trans-Tasman neighbour
Australia, clearly suggesting an opportunity for
the Indian market, only if, it can cater to the
expectations of Kiwi-travellers.
Meanwhile, Incredible India’s Auckland
roadshow was part of its broader Oceania
strategy of attracting travellers from Australia
and New Zealand.
Earlier two roadshows were also held in
preceding weeks Australian cities of Melbourne
and Sydney.
Incredible India is positioning India as a
‘Transformative Destination’ for travelers from
New Zealand and Australia.
A total of 56,597 tourists from New Zealand
visited India in 2017 registering a growth of
11.2 per cent over 2016.

the Indian Weekender that the target was to
continue recording an upward growth rate
in international tourist arrivals over the next
3 years through a multi-pronged approach,
including proactive marketing strategies in
partnership with the tourism stakeholders.

Meet the artist behind Lord Ganesha’s
biggest portrait at Papakura Temple

he recently inaugurated 10.5 feet by
6.5 feet oil painting of Lord Ganesha at
the famous Papakura Ganesha Temple
in South Auckland could very well have the
reputation of being the tallest locally-made
portrait among all temples of New Zealand.
At least, the portrait is the biggest for the
Auckland based Kiwi-Indian artist Nagender
Reddy Vangala – who completed the project
in less than three months with a single mind
devotion to Lord Ganesha.
The portrait was recently inaugurated by
Head Priest of Ganesha Temple Papakura
Chandru Kurukal on Sunday, April 14, at the
occasion of celebrations of traditional Tamil
New Year.
Since then the portrait continues to attract the
attention of regular visitors and ardent devotees
of Lord Ganesha at the famous temple.
The Indian Weekender spoke with Mr Reddy
– a professional artist – who quite unusually
found interest in the craft bit late in his life,
when he was pursuing zoology in college,
before being told by his professor that his
destiny was somewhere else – in arts.
A casual chat with Mr Reddy revealed that
long before coming to New Zealand he had the
privilege of crafting on several commissioned
work by prominent celebrities of India,
including none other than Sachin Tendulkar,
Shane Watson, Telugu superstar Allu Arjun and
many more.
He also passionately told about cracking the
entrance to Vancouver Film School as his most
significant achievement so far where he
came first among 250,000 artists from all
over the world.
Here are some excerpts of the
interview:
IWK: How excited are you to
find your work – a portrait of
Lord Ganesha – in the local
Ganesh Temple at Papakura?
Mr Reddy: This has been a dream
since 2015 and I am really excited to
have completed this finally. Papakura
Ganesh temple is close to our heart, and
it gives me immense pleasure to see one of
my biggest paintings of Lord Ganesha in the
temple.
IWK: How did this happen? Were you
commissioned for this work?
Mr Reddy: When Ganesha temple was
renovated and expanded in 2015, I wanted
to do a painting for the temple. It was pure
coincidence that the priest of the temple,
Chandru Ji also had a similar thought and asked
me to do a painting of Lord Ganesha for the
temple. This is not a commissioned work; it is
our donation to the temple.
IWK: Tell us more about yourself and
your passion for portrait making?
When did you realise your interest in
portrait making?
Mr Reddy: Drawing or painting is not in
the family and does not come as a childhood
interest. My passion for drawing started in
college days when I put in a lot of interest
in my science zoology-record. My Zoology
professor had sown the seeds of art in me but
a science record in my hand did not prove to
anyone I would make a successful career as
an artist. I was directed to a 2D animation
studio in 2001 where drawing similar images
hundreds of times was required to complete an
animation scene. I think this was when I started
experimenting on portraits and found myself
in-treat of what I could do with just a pencil
on paper.

IWK: Who were the key inspirations
behind your interest in this craft?
Mr Reddy: If I look back and explore who
or what were my key inspirations, I would
definitely give credit to my Zoology professor
who made me aware that there is a career in art,
but I guess the biggest support was my father
compounded with a mad interest in me to “make
it happen”. My father stood like a mountain of
support and let me do what I wanted. Sometimes
in life, it is not the money or resources, but
pure trust and support from dear ones are all
one needs to step forward. I received a lot of
push back not only from friends and extended
family but also from reputed art universities at
the beginning of my artist journey. I took them
as a blessing in disguise and stepped forward.
IWK: Tell us about key achievements so
far?
Mr Reddy: Cracking the entrance to
Vancouver Film School is by far my most
significant achievement as I proved my worth
by coming first among 250,000 artists all over
the world. This formed the basis of many
more achievements and the recognition the
award brought was immense. It gave me the
opportunity to meet Sachin Tendulkar who
was one of the first few who commissioned
my portrait work. Another big achievement

a huge amount which could help children with
heart problems.
The latest and the greatest for me is to have
completed the biggest painting I have ever done
for our Local Ganesh Temple in Auckland.
IWK: What brought you to
New Zealand?
Mr Reddy: It is pure destiny. After securing my
entrance to Vancouver Film School, I planned
to go to the United States for my studies and
career. But to my disappointment, my visa was
rejected multiple times. I was approached by an
agency that assisted with visas to New Zealand,
and now I feel lucky to have taken that step to
apply and come to NZ.
IWK: Do you make portraits for a
living? If not, then how do you manage
between your daytime work and
passion for portrait making?
Mr Reddy: Yes, portrait commission work is
my full-time profession. I am also in the process
of exhibiting work at renowned art galleries in
Auckland and India. In the near future, there
are plans to establish an art institute to cater to
teaching art
IWK: What is your next main project?
What are your future plans?
Mr Reddy: I am working on a couple of
commissioned portraits which I will not be

Turban Day at Aotea Square

rganisers of Turban Day are
overwhelmed with the fantastic
response received from the public
on Friday’s outdoor event at Aotea Square in
Auckland CBD.
Approximately 1000 turbans were made
available to be draped on interested visitors
at the event. Hundreds of men, women and
children tried the unique headdress – pride of
the Sikh community.
“Turban is not only religious wear- it is much
more significant than that,” said one of the
volunteers while draping the turban on a visitor.
Both men and women in the Sikh community
wear a turban as it signifies not just a cultural
or religious identity but also represents the
embodiment of Sikh values, teachings and
love for the Guru Nanak and his practices. The
turban worn by Sikh men and women is also a
symbol of gender equality.
The event was organised by the Supreme Sikh
Society of NZ in collaboration with different
Gurudwaras in NZ and Radio Sadeaala.

showcase unity, organizer Harpreet Singh said.
“At the event, the excitement amongst
the visitors tying the turban was amazing,
especially amongst children who took pictures
with the trainers and were eager to know more
about the Sikh religion, the turban and its
importance,” organiser Gurpreet Singh said.

“this turban feels really special, and I take so
much pride in wearing it today.
“I did not know that women wear the turban
too and although I have visited Gurudwaras in

Interreligious Association for peace
and development launched

he Universal Peace Federation (UPF),
New Zealand chapter hosted a launch
event of the Interreligious Association
for Peace and Development (IAPD) earlier
this month in the presence of 70 leaders from
various backgrounds in Auckland.
The members who participated at the event
were heads of different religious groups, faith-
based organisations and political leaders who
rendered their views contributing to peace
and prosperity between members of different
communities.
The event was held on Saturday, April 13 at
Mt Eden War Memorial Hall.
The theme of the event besides the formation
of IAPD was “addressing the Critical Challenge
of our time to create a vibrant community:
The contribution of religious and faith-based
organisations.”
UPF, an international and interreligious
network of individuals and organisations,
including representatives from religion,
government, civil society and the private sector,
is dedicated to achieving world peace.
As per UPF, the need to launch IAPD in
New Zealand became more relevant and urgent
following the Christchurch mosque attacks in
March this year.

Director of UPF-NZ Adel Jamati delivered a
keynote addressing the challenges posed by the
atheistic ‘religion’, and ‘Secular Humanism’
such as the teaching of the doctrine of Evolution
in schools.
Mr Jamati discussed the way it is moulding
the youths as well as weakening the culture of
marriage and family. He also highlighted the
universal and profound spirituality embedded
in all religions as a unifying factor for world
peace.
The event ended with the launch of IAPD
in ‘Peace Water Ceremony’ a symbolic
representation of the significance of religious
and civic representatives pouring sacred water
into a bowl that symbolises an ocean.
“The Inaugural Assembly of the IAPD
[has] brought a new level of unity amongst
interreligious communities in cooperation with
the political leaders to work together in order
to create a vibrant community, society, and
nation,” the media release said.

First ever Vaisakhi Gala Dinner

Multimedia Trust has
pioneered the first-ever
Vaisakhi Gala Dinner in New
Zealand hosted on Saturday,
April 28 at The Event Centre in
Manukau.
The ticketed gala dinner had
members of the community,
community leaders, performers
and guests from different
organisations and a world-
renowned artist from Canada,
Jarnail Singh, attending the
event.
The purpose of the event was to host
a formal evening observing one of the
biggest and most important festivals
of the Punjabi community ‘Vaisakhi’
and raise funds through the event to
promote and spread the knowledge
about Sikhism, and avenues that the
community can benefit from.
The event began with the
introduction of the guest Jarnail
Singh followed by a presentation
on the significance of the Vaisakhi
festival for the Punjabi and the Sikh
community.
Vaisakhi is also significant for the
community as it is remembered as
the day when the Jallianwala Bagh
massacre took place in 1913, killing
hundreds of peaceful protestors
gathered at the garden on the
auspicious day.
Following the same emotions,
the gathering at the event rose and
observed a minute’s silence for the
victims of the Christchurch mosque
attack and the terror attack in Sri
Lanka on Easter Sunday earlier in
April.
“We have gathered here not just to
celebrate a formal Vaisakhi event, but
also get feedbacks and contribution
from our community members to
know what we can do from our end
to spread peace and brotherhood
amongst different communities,”
Navtej Randhawa from NZ Punjabi
Multimedia Trust said at the event.
“The funds we gather here today
will be used for creating a knowledge
base about Sikh religion, its teachings
and value through stories, videos,
posters and we post them on social
media to create more awareness
about our community,” Mr Randhawa
added.
Following a number of Bhangra,
solo singing and poetry performances-
a number of community leaders were
acknowledged and felicitated at the
event for their contribution towards
different community projects. Some
of the speakers applauded the idea
and the work that is planned by the
Multimedia Trust in spreading more
awareness about the Sikh community.
The visitors eagerly waited to hear
from the chief guest, artist Jarnail
Singh, who thanked the organisers
and expressed his joy being a part of
the first-ever Vaisakhi gala dinner in
New Zealand.
The ticketed gala dinner had members
of the community, community leaders,
performers and guests from different
organisations and a world-renowned
artist from Canada, Jarnail Singh,
attending the event.
In the Q&A session with Jarnail
Singh, he mentioned about his work
and inspiration that has given him a
global recognition not just in Canada
or India, but also beyond the Punjabi-
Indian diaspora across the globe.
Mr Singh is not just a painter
but also a calligrapher, journalist,
photographer and an ardent writer
of Sikh art and history. His works
have been exhibited in the United
Kingdom, Canada, the United States,
India, Europe, Africa, Germany,
Singapore, Australia, and New
Zealand. He is also the recipient of
several honors and awards across
different nations for his work and
contribution to the Sikh community.
Following the success of the
gala dinner that had approximately
200 people attending, NZ Punjabi
Multimedia Trust plans to organise a
bigger formal dinner event in 2020.

Mayor Phil Goff said,
“This project is critical to the future of
this city. More than $700 million has
already been invested in the first two
stages of the tunnel. Without the CRL,
Auckland will hit gridlock and the city
will grind to a halt.
“The CRL is the biggest investment

infrastructure in the next few years.
Securing additional funding ensures it
will be future-proofed for growth.
“The additional cost to Council will
not involve higher rates for Aucklanders
and it will be met without breaching
the debt to revenue limit on Council
borrowing.
“The cost of the tunnels and
underground stations, two of the biggest
parts of the project, was determined
by a competitive tender process. The
increased cost estimate reflects the
increase in demand and costs for major
construction projects across Australasia.
“A significant part of the cost
increase, some $250 million, reflects
the need to future proof the tunnels and
stations. We won’t repeat the mistake of
the Harbour Bridge which was built at
half of the size it needed to be and had to
have major additions made to it within
eight years.
“Another $300 million is money
not spent but is there as a contingency
against any potential cost escalations.
“Without additional funding, the CRL
would not have been fit for purpose. We
would have had another Harbour Bridge
on our hands which was built at half of
the size it needed to be and had to have
major additions made to it within eight
years.
“We’ve got one shot at getting
the CRL right. Approving additional
funding today will ensure that we do.
“Providing additional funding to
CRLL will require careful management
of Council spending. Council will
continue to pursue efficiency and
value for money initiatives, and
take a conservative approach to new
spending,” Phil Goff said.
In approving its funding commitment
to the CRL, Council approved the
following initiatives to generate the
additional $500 million:

• Interest cost savings due to lower

market interest rates;
• A reduction in cash holdings from
improved cash management;
• Re-assessment of the valuation
of operating commitments which
impact on Auckland Council’s debt
policy limits;
• Agree to progress a strategy to assess
future off-street parking requirements
for Auckland, including additional
investment in park and ride facilities
and net surplus to fund City Rail
Link (CRL); and
• Flexibility around the timing
of Auckland Council’s CRL
contributions.
Funding of the CRL is met jointly by
Council and Government on a 50/50
basis.

he young boy’s mother, Sumeshni Ali,
said she was grateful to the incredible
help done by surgeons and specialists to
save her son’s life.
Four and a half year old Ameer Ali is
expected to be feeling much better today after
his successful free heart operation.

“I am so thankful to God and to the surgeons
for doing these free heart surgeries in Fiji for
kids like my son,” said Mrs Ali.
“My son kept having shortness of breath
and we kept thinking he had asthma but after
medical checkups and clinics at CWM, we
found out that he had a hole in his heart.”
Ameer is among the 18-20 children who
have and will be undergoing surgery in the
next couple of days. Mrs Ali advises parents to
always pay attention to their child’s health from
a very young age and not to take it for granted.
“Always seek medical help from hospitals
and nearby medical facilities because you have
all the right to know about your kid’s health and
it is the parent’s responsibility to be attentive
and not to be careless,” said Mrs Ali.
After undergoing a three-hour surgery,
Ameer is now recovering at the Intensive Care
Unit.
The young recipients were identified with
various heart complications after 76 children

is the richest candidate with declared assets
of over Rs 193 crore in the fifth phase of
Lok Sabha polls, according to the National
Election Watch (NEW) and the Association for
Democratic Reforms (ADR).
Sinha topped the list of rich candidates with
declared assets of over Rs 193 crore followed by
Vijay Kumar Mishra, Pragatisheel Samajwadi
Party (Lohia) candidate from Sitapur, with over
Rs 177 crore assets.
The third on the list was BJP candidate from
Hazaribagh Jayant Sinha, with declared assets
worth over Rs 77 crore. Three candidates in the
fray have declared zero assets.
According to NEW and ADR, 184 of the 668
candidates contesting in the fifth phase of Lok
Sabha elections, have assets worth Rs 1 crore
or more. Most of these 184 candidates are from
the BJP.
The ADR has analysed the self-sworn
affidavits of 668 out of the 674 candidates
contesting in the fifth phase of polling on May
6 across 51 Lok Sabha constituencies in seven
states.
"Six candidates have not been analysed due
to unavailability of their properly scanned and
complete affidavits, till the time of making this
report," the organisation said.
"Among the major parties, 38 of the 48 BJP
candidates, 32 of the 45 Congress candidates,
17 of the 33 BSP candidates, 8 of the 9 SP
candidates and 31 of the 252 independent
candidates have declared assets more than Rs
1 crore," it said.
It added that the average worth of assets
per candidate contesting in the fifth phase of
polling was Rs 2.57 crore.
"Among the major parties, 48 BJP candidates
have average assets of Rs 6.91 crore, 45
Congress candidates have average assets of Rs
8.74 crore, 33 BSP candidates have average
assets of Rs 3.32 crore, and 9 SP candidates
have average assets worth Rs 31.57 crore," it
said.
While 264 candidates have declared their
educational qualifications between Class 5
and Class 12, 348 candidates have declared
themselves as graduate or above.
"Forty three candidates in the race are just
literate and six candidates are illiterate," said
the oragnisations.

"When we design these systems,

He added that Boeing was unable
to find any "technical slip or gap"
in building its MCAS software.

Social media ban lifted in Sri Lanka

Pakistan and IMF begin talks on bailout package
P akistan and IMF began formal talks on Monday over a three-year
bailout package for economic reforms. The two sides are discussing the
possibility of a $7-$8 billion loan deal, local media reported.
According to adviser and spokesman for the finance ministry, Khaqan
Najeeb, the IMF delegation would meet officials of the ministry, the Federal
Board of Revenue and the State (Central) Bank during its visit to Pakistan.
The review mission is expected to analyse economic data and engage in
policy level discussions with de facto finance minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh,
during which terms and conditions of the programme will be determined. If
successful, the mission will sign a letter of intent with Pakistan.
The IMF team will be briefed over the progress of economic targets and
presented with the recommendations for the federal budget for the fiscal
year 2019-20.

festival event ‘Baduli 19’ during the
Easter weekend at Avondale College
