Ce le (Case XXXX Radiography Using Phosphor Imaging Plate, Section V Inquiry: Is it permissible to perform radiography jn accordance with Article 2 using a phosphor jroaging plate in lieu of file? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that radiography may be performed using a phosphor imaging plate in lieu of film provided the requirements of Article 2 as modified herein are met. In addition, this Case number shall be shown on the Manufacturer's Data Report and the extent of the Radiography examination using ‘phosphor imaging plate shall be noted. For the purposes of clarity, the paragraph numbers used in this Case refer to those Beragapts specially affected in Secon V, ‘T-10 SCOPE Radiography using phosphor imaging plate (Photostimulable luminescent phosphor) may be performed on materials including castings and Weldments ‘when the modified provisions to Article 2 as indicated herein and all other requirements of Article 2 are satisfied. The term film, a8 used within Article 2 applicable to ‘performing radiography in accordance with this Case, refers to phosphor imaging plate. Appendix TIL, Digital Image Acquisition for Radiography and Radiascopy, shall be used where applicable. ‘7221.1 Written Procedure ‘A written procedure is required In liew of the requirements of T-221.1, each prooedure shall include at least the following information as applicable: (@) material type and thickness range, () isotope or maximum X-ray voltage used, (©) minimum source-to-cbject distance (D in T- 274.1), (@) distance from source side of object to the ‘phosphor imaging plate (4 in T-274.1), (©) source size (F in T-274.1), phosphor imaging plate mamufacturer and esignaticn, @ screens used, Code Case () image scanning end processing equipment ‘manufacturer and model. 7-221.2 Procedure Demonstration Demonstration of IQI image requirements of the ‘writen procedure on production or technique radiographs using phosphor imaging plate shall be considered satisfactory evidence of compliance with that procedure. ‘7-225 Monitoring Density Limitations of Radiographs ‘The requirements of 1-225 are not applicable to Phosphor imaging plate radiography. ‘T-231.1 Selection Radiography shall be performed using an ‘industrial phosphor imaging plate capable of demonstrating Ql image requirements. ‘The excitation (scanning) system for reading # phosphor imaging plate sball be capable of ‘acquiring and storing the required data and displaying the digital image. 7-234 Facilites for Viewing of Radiographs Viewing facilities shall provide subdued background lighting of am intensity that will not cause troublesome reflections, shadows, or glare on the monitor that interfere with the interpretation process. 7-262 Denitometer and Step Wedge ‘Comparison Film The requirements of T-262 are not applicable to phosphor imaging plate radiography. T2771 Placement of IQs ‘When using separate blocks for IQl placement as described in 1-277.1(@), the thickness of the blocks shall be such that the negative image brightness at the body of the 1QI is equal to or greater than the image brightness at the area of interest. All other requirements of T-277.1 shall apply. CODE CASE T2772 Number of 1Qis (@) Multiple 10Is. An 1QK shall be used for each applicable thickness range in Table 1-276 spanned by the minimum-to-maximam thickness of the area of interest tobe radiographed ‘All other requirements of T-277.1 shall apply. T-2773 Shims Under Hole 101s For welds with reinforcement or backing material, a shim of material radiographically similar to the weld metal and/or backing roaterial shall be placed between the part and the 1Qls, such that the negative image brighmess at the ‘body of the 1QI is equal to or greater than the jmage brighmess at the area of interest ‘The shim dimensions shall exceed the 1QIs dimensions such that the outline of at least three Sides of the JQIs shall be visible in the radiograph. ‘T-281 System-Induced Artifacts ‘The digital image shall be free of system-induced artifacts in the area of interest that could mask or ‘be confused with the image of any discontinuity. ‘T-282 Radiographic Density ‘The requirements of T-282 are not applicable to phosphor imaging plate radiography. 7-487 Measuring Seale ‘The measuring scale used for interpretation shall bbe capable of providing dimensions of the projected image. The measurement scale tool Shall be based upon a known dimensional comparator that is placed on the cassette. ‘7-288 Interpretation Final radiographic interpretation shall be made after the digital image displays the required QI ‘ay. ‘7-291 Digital Imaging Technique Documentation Details ‘The manufacturer shall prepare and document the radiographic technique details, As a minimum, the following information shall be provided: (@ identification as required by T-224 (®) the dimensional map (if used) of marker placement in accardance with T-253.3 (©) number of exposures @ X-ray voltage or isotope used (@) source size F in T-274.1) (D base material type and thickness, weld reinforcement thickness, as applicable @ source to cbject distance ( D in T-274.1) (A) distance from source side of object to storage phosphor media (4 in T-274.1 (D storage phosphor manufacturer and, designation () image acquisition (digitizing) equipment ‘manufacturer, model and serial number (@ single or double-wall exposure (D single or double-wall viewing (my) procedure identification and revision level (a) imaging software version and revision (©) final image processing parameters, ic, (brightness) (2) minimum and maxinmum data sets (when ‘more thi one set of mumerical values are utilized) “The technique details may be embedded in the data file. When this is performed, ASTM E 1475, Standard Guide for Computerized Transfer of Digital Radiological Examination Data, may be used as a guide for establishing data fields and information content.
