PART-B (5×13=65Marks)
11. a) A Dual combustion air standard cycle has a compression ratio of 10. The constant
pressure part of combustion takes place at 40 bar. The highest and the lowest temperature of
the cycle are 1725degree C and 270C respectively. The pressure at the beginning of
compression is 1 bar. Calculate (I) the pressure and temperature at’ key points of the cycle.
(ii) The heat supplied at constant volume, (iii) the heat supplied at constant pressure.
(iv)The heat rejected. (v) The work output. (vi)The efficiency and (vii) MEP.
(or)
11. b) Define Diesel Cycle with Derivation for Air Standard Cycle & Mean Effective Pressure.

12. a) A single stage single acting air compressor is used to compress air from 1.013 bar and
25°C to 7 bar according to law PV 1.3 = C. The bore and stroke of a cylinder are 120mm and
150mm respectively. The compressor runs at 250 rpm .If clearance volume of the cylinder is
5% of stroke volume and the mechanical efficiency of the compressor is 85%, determine
volumetric efficiency, power, and mass of air delivered per minute.
(or)
12. b) A two stage singe acting air compressor compresses 2m3 air from 1 bar and 20° C to 15
bar. The air from the low pressure compressor is cooled to 25°C in the intercooler. Calculate
the minimum power required to run the compressor if the compression follows PV1.25=C
and the compressor runs at 400 rpm.

13. a) i) Explain a typical port timing diagram and the significance of each angle in the port
timing diagram.
ii) Compare 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines.
(or)
13.b)What are the factors affecting the knocking system and Explain any one lubrication system
adopted in multi cylinder SI engines?

14. a) Draw the layout of battery ignition system and mention the function of each component.
(or)
14. b) Explain the working of multi-point fuel injection system with a block diagram

15. a) A gas turbine plant of 800 kW capacities takes the air at 1.01 bar and 15 0C. The pressure
ratio of the cycle is 6 and maximum temperature is limited to 7000C. A regenerator of 75%
effectiveness is added in the plant to increase the overall efficiency of the plant. The
pressure drop in the combustion chamber is 0.15 bar as well as in the regenerator is also
0.15 bar. Assuming the isentropic efficiency of the compressor as 80% and the turbine as
85%, determine the plant thermal efficiency. Neglect the mass of the fuel.
(or)
15. b) Obtain optimum pressure ratio condition for minimum compressor work requirement in
two stage perfect intercooled compression.

PART-C (1×15=15Marks)
16. a) The following observations are recorded during a test on a four stroke petrol engine,
F.C= 3000 of fuel in 12sec, speed of the engine is 2500rpm, B.P = 20KW, Air intake orifice
diameter = 35mm,Pressure across the orifice = 140mm of water coefficient of discharge of
orifice = 0.6, piston diameter = 150mm, stroke length = 100mm, Density of the fuel =
0.85gm/cc , r=6.5, CV of fuel = 42000KJ/Kg, Barometric pressure = 760mm of Hg , Room
temperature = 240C
(or)
16. b) A six cylinder 4 stroke SI engine having a piston displacement of 700 cc per cylinder
develops 78 kW at 3200 rpm and consumed 27 kg/h of petrol. The calorific value of petrol
is 44MJ/kg. Determine
( i) Volumetric efficiency its A/F is 12 and intake air is at 0.9 bar and 320C.
Rair = 287 J/kgK
(ii) Brake thermal efficiency.
(iii) Brake torque.
