Working Principle
Vapour compression refrigeration is generally used in
refrigerators.
Throttling Device: It is a crucial component of a
refrigerator. A capillary tube is used as throttling device.
Cold liquid is produced using throttling phenomenon. At
the inlet the refrigerant is in liquid state under high
pressure. During the flow the pressure drops extensively
and boiling point of the liquid comes down. So, the
refrigerant liquid evaporates and its temperature drops.
A portion of the refrigerant is evaporated here.
Evaporator: The refrigerant is passed to the evaporator
from throttling device. Here during the heat absorption
process, the refrigerant further evaporates and
transforms into pure vapour. Since there is only phase
change during this process the refrigerant temperature
does not increase. This is the main component which
extracts heat from the objects to be cooled.

Evaporator Fan: This is used to maintain non varying and
desired temperature in the refrigerator chamber by the
help of air vents. With the help of specific air flow
circulation inside the refrigerator the different levels of
temperature can be obtained in freezer and other
section. And thus, desired refrigeration effect is
produced.
Compressor: It increases the pressure of the refrigerant
to its initial value. Generally reciprocating type
compressor is used. It increases the pressure of the
vapour so the temperature also increases and the
refrigerant becomes high pressure vapour. In modern
refrigerators digital inverter compressors are used to
achieve variable compressor speed.
Condenser: This heat exchanger is fitted outside the
refrigerator. The refrigerant comes here from the
compressor and releases heat to the surroundings and
changes its state to liquid. From here the refrigerator is
send to the throttling device. In modern refrigerators
condenser is fitted beside the compressor and a cooling
fan is installed for better heat exchanging.
These are the basic components of refrigerator.
With only these instalments the refrigerator will face
some issues like development of frost in the freezer
compartment. So, to overcome these issues and to
5
increase the performance, some other components are
used.

Advantages and Disadvantages
of Double Door Refrigerator
Advantages:
• It offers greater capacity. Large items can be easily
stored. The swing of the door takes less space when
they are swung open as they are purposely shaped
narrower.
• Offers greater cooling effect. The manufacturers use
healthiest technology of all in the double door
refrigerators as the food hygiene has to be
encompassed into the factors that people look in a
refrigerator. The cooling technology helps preserve
food for longer duration and these are designed
specifically to operate under fluctuations as well.
• In normal refrigerators the frost built up in the
freezer had to be cleaned manually and the frost
used to take up most space in the freezer. But
double door refrigerator has a built-in frost-free
automatic system making the use even easier.

• This allows better and efficient cooling since every
time one opens the fridge; he/she is not opening the
freezer with it. So, no extra power is consumed.
Disadvantages:
• The disadvantage of purchasing a double door
refrigerator is that it might be expensive than what
one can afford. Even with minimum functionality,
they are costly because of their specific design.
• Since their cooling capacity has been enhanced
greatly, the power consumption increases and thus
incurring higher electricity bills. Many companies try
their utmost to lower the energy consumption.
• They occupy more floor space.
