5. SAFETY (HSE INSTRUCTION)

- Always use PPE such as Safety shoes, hand glove, safety glass, and
helmet.
- Watch out for slippery and falling apart.
- Watch out for the hazard around the areas. Stop the activities and report
to client and supervisor for unsafe working condition.
- Use fall protection equipment if working above 2 m.
- Collect all waste and put it in agreed place.
- Do not expose any lubricant, oil or test fluid to the ground.

6. PROCEDURE

6.1. SURFACE PREPARATION

5.1.1. Satisfactory results are usually obtained when the surfaces are
in as-welded, as-rolled, as-cast or as-forged conditions.
However, surface preparation by grinding may be necessary
where surface irregularities could mask indications due to
discontinuities.

5.1.2. Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be

examined and all adjacent areas within at least 25 mm shall be
dry and free of all dirt, greases, lint, scale, welding flux and
spatter, oil or other extraneous matter that could interfere with
the examination,

5.1.3. Cleaning may be accomplished using detergents, organic

solvents, descaling solutions, paint removers, sand or grid
blasting.
or
5.1.4. The following prepared cleaner which are stored in cans
(aerosol spray) may be used in this procedure :
MAGNAFLUX - SKC – S or Equivalent

6.2. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

Examination shall be done by the continuous method, that is, the

magnetizing current remains on while the examination medium is being
applied and while excess of the examination medium is being removed.

6.3. EXAMINATION MEDIUM

6.3.1. The finely divided ferromagnetic particles used for this

examination shall provide adequate contrast with the surface
being examined. The following examination medium shall be
used in this procedure :

WET (Nonfluorescent) : Black Magnetic Ink

WET Fluorescent : Yellow Green
DRY : 1 Gray or Red

6.3.2. Particles shall be used within the temperature range limitation

set by the manufacturer.

6.4. CONTRAST PAINT

The contrast paint (WCP) shall be used as the background of part

being inspected for the wet magnetic particles Color of the paint shall
be normally white against black colour ink.

6.5. APPLICATION TECHNIQUE

6.5.1. Wet particle: The examination bath shall be applied by spraying

it over the areas to be examined.
6.5.2. Dry Particle: The powder shall be applied by lightly dusting a
small quantity over the surface
6.5.3. The mechanics and timing of the particle application shall be
such that indications will have sufficient time to form.

6.6. MAGNETIC PROCEDURE

At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area.

During the second examination, the lines of magnetic flux shall be
approximately perpendicular to those used for the first examination all
examinations shall be conducted with sufficient overlap to assure
100% coverage at the required sensitivity.

6.7. LIFTING POWER OF YOKES

6.7.1. The magnetizing force of the yoke shall be checked at least

once a year, or whenever the yoke has been damaged or
repaired. The magnetizing power of permanent magnetic shall
be checked daily prior to use.

6.7.2. The weight of the test bar is to be:

6.7.2.1. 5 kgs (10 lbs.) for an A C yoke
6.7.2.2. 18 kgs (40 lbs.) for an D C and a permanent magnet
yoke

6.8. MAGNETIZING FIELD ADEQUACY AND DIRECTION

When it is desirable to verify the adequacy of magnetic field strength,

or direction of magnetizing, the ”Pie-Shaped Magnetic Particle Field
Indicator” shall be used by positioning the indicator on the surface to
be examined.

FIELD INDICATOR

6.9. INTERPRETATION

6.9.1. With non fluorescent particles, the examination is performed

using visible light. A minimum light intensity of 100 fc (1000 Lx)
required insuring adequate sensitivity during the examination.
6.9.2. With fluorescent particles, the examination is performing using
visible light. The examination shall be performed as follows:
6.9.2.1. It shall be perform in a dark area.
6.9.2.2. The examiner shall be in a dark area for at least 5
minutes prior to performing the examination to enable
his eyes to adapt the dark viewing.
6.9.2.3. The black light shall be allowed to warm up for a
minimum of 5 minutes prior to use or measurement of
the intensity of the ultraviolet light emitted.

6.9.2.4. The black light intensity shall be measured with a black

light meter. A minimum of 1000 W/cm2 on the surface of
the part being examination shall be required. The black
light intensity shall be measured at least once every 8
hours, and whenever the work station is changed.
6.9.3. Indications will be revealed by retention of magnetic particles. All
such indications are not necessarily imperfection, however,
since excessive surface roughness, magnetic permeability
variations (such as at the edge of heat affected zones), etc. may
produce similar indications.
6.9.4. Indications are to be classified as either linier or rounded.
6.9.5. An indication is the evidence of a mechanical imperfection. Only
indications which have any dimension greater than 1/16” shall
be considered relevant.
6.9.6. A linear indication is one having a length greater than three
times the width.
6.9.7. A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with a
length equal to or less than three times its width.
6.9.8. Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re - examined
to determine whether or not they are relevant.

6.10. EVALUATION OF INDICATIONS

6.10.1. Welds are to be free of any crack and incomplete fusion.

6.10.2. Other indications to be evaluation are porosity (as rounded

indication or linier indication) and undercut refers to a groove
melted in the base metal adjacent to a weld toe at the face or
root of the weld.

7. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Standard acceptability of discontinuity detected shall be in accordance with

Appendix 6 of ASME Section VIII, Division 1, and 2010 Edition with the latest
addenda.

8. REPAIR REQUIREMENTS.

8.1. Treatment of imperfection believe nonrelevant.

PT. CAST INSPECTION AND Document No. Revision Effective Date
ENGINEERING CAST/II/NDT/MT01 00 21 June 2013

Any indication which is believed to be nonrelevant shall be regarded

as an imperfection unless it is shown by reexamination by the same
method that no imperfection is present.

8.2. Examination of Areas from which imperfections have been removed.

After a defect is thought to have been removed and prior to making
weld repairs, the area shall be examined with the same method to
ensure that the defect have been removed or reduced to an acceptably
sized imperfection.

8.3. Reexamination of Repaired Areas.

After repairs have been made, the repaired area shall be blended into
the surrounding surface so as to avoid sharp notches, crevices, or
corners and reexamined by magnetic particle testing method except
that, when the depth of repair is less than the radiographic sensitivity
required, reradiography may be omitted.

9. POST INSPECTION CLEANING

Post inspection cleaning is necessary where magnetic particle material (s)

could interfere with subsequent processing or with service requirements. Area
to be performed post cleaning are welding, painting, plating and all inspection
area.
Typical post cleaning techniques employed are:
a. Drying of wet particles and subsequent removal by brushing or
compressed air.
b. Removal of wet particles by flushing with solvent or water.

10. DEMAGNETIZATION

When residual magnetism in the part could interfere with subsequent

processing or usage, the part shall be demagnetized any time after completion
of the examination.
Demagnetization is to be required if any of the following operations are to be
performed in the inspection area:
Welding
Painting
Plating
Demagnetization is to be required if the inspection area is in closed proximity to
sensitive electronic instrumentation or a compass.
