Teacher Intern: Annie Kim Date: March 6 Mentor Teacher: Yanbo Chen
Grade Level: second Subject/ Topic: math-measuring with inches
Approx. time spent planning this lesson:
DOMAIN 1: PLANNING & PREPARATION
Main Focus/Essential Questions:
The main focus of the lesson is to teach students how to measure in inches using rulers.
Brief Context:
In our measurement and data unit, students will start by learning how to measure different objects in inches. Students
will have abundant and repeated opportunities to measure real life objects.
Prerequisite Knowledge/Skills:
Students should know or heard of inches.
Lesson Objectives/Learning Targets Aligned Assessments
The learner will: I will assess learning by:
1. Be able to measure various objects using rulers 1. Students work written on their notebook
in inches
Standards Addressed:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.1
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter
sticks, and measuring tapes.
Instructional Resources and Materials:
Rulers, notebooks, real life objects in the classroom, whiteboard
Consideration of Learners:
Provide repeated and abundant experience where they can actually measure things by themselves. This is helpful for
students in every learning level. Make sure I go around the classroom and meet with individual students to ask questions
and check their understandings.
Individual Accommodations:
AM- Oscar sits on the left side of the teacher. Students can’t sit together because of distraction: Mar, Ava,
Chumba, Ivy, Grant, Nathan, Ethan, TJ, Alienor, and Madison. These students has to be separated for learning
purpose.
PM- Kayd sits on the table to help him concentrate. Students who need to be separated: Ibrahim, Elliotte, Ronin,
Mia, Kaidin, and Joseph
Conduct Management
Whole group attention strategies: Provide different examples or objects that they can use to measure. Especially
engage students into measuring progress like measuring their own or others’ hand, finger nails, length of the lip,
etc.
Individual student redirection strategies: To redirect students, call on their names or get closer to them. Change
seats when they are distracted by their surroundings.
Content Management:
Remind students that we are using 0 or 1 voice level when looking for 10 objects in the classroom. Make sure we are not
talking to our friends, but be on task.
Physical Environment:
Students are sitting down on the carpet while I teach the whole group. Then, they will walk around the
classroom to find 10 objects and sit on their table when they write their measurement.
DOMAIN 3: INSTRUCTION- [Content Management]
Motivation/Opening/Intro:
Start off by saying that we use measurement in our daily lives. For example, we use them when we measure our
heights, length of our shoes, etc. In America, commonly used measurement unit is inches. Teach them how to
say inches in Chinese.
Teach them that one inch is about the length between your thumb tip and the top knuckle of the thumb.
Development:
Measure different objects in the classroom in inches. Allow different students to come up and measure them.
Measure student’s different part of the face or body in inches.
Closure:
Students are going to find 10 objects in the classroom and measure them using inch rulers. Before I let
them go, go over expectations. We are not going to hit others with our rulers. When we measure with
rulers, we start from 0. Remind them that there are two measurements on the ruler: in and cm, so we
need to be careful when measuring. Make sure we measure in inch.
