World of Opportunities
In this ad, it is a tie ad that is showing that only men can have the nicest clothing,
therefore making it their world. There are other ads from the 1950’s that are similar to the tone of
this ad. Back then, it was perceived that men were better than women, almost as if the women
were just there to do as the men said and nothing more. The purpose of this analysis is to show
that everyone is equal and the world is run by everyone together. The Van Heusen tie ad
demonstrates how society has changed and that, no matter man or woman, all people are created
equally.
The biggest change that society has made since the fifties is that women are independent.
In the ad, and in that time era, women were seen as dependent and had no power to do any sort
of job outside of their homes. They were there to serve their husbands while they did all the hard
work that a woman could never do. Still today there are specific activities and jobs that men still
think women should not do. Women are more than capable of doing almost any job that a man
can do, even though they are not deemed fit for it. Now that men and women are doing equal
jobs in society today, looking back in time and seeing how men thought women were only good
for inside the house jobs just shows the ignorance that people can have towards one another
The ad shows the rhetorical concept of pathos. Pathos is a way to influence people
through emotions to get them to think a certain way. The marketers used it in this ad to make

women feel dependent and worthless. When men see this ad, they feel power and control over
the women and that it is their world. When in reality, no one has that type of power over others
just from being a man. At that time in the world though, as unfair as it seems, this was how men
and women were depicted. Shift forward to today where this ad would never be able to exist
because every man and woman is treated the same by participating in jobs that were only thought
to be for men.
The way society is depicted has changed and now both men and women share this world
and everything in it equally. Because of this step taken from then to now, more is possible for
everyone. Anything is possible because of the ability to see past power and see everyone equally.
