BUILDING SERVICE (RES557)

PROJECT BRIEF

Submission and presentation date: Week 14

Introduction

The project is a study on building service system with the selected topic which are electrical,
ventilation, telecommunication, cold water supply, hot water supply, vertical transportation,
refuse disposal and fire safety.

Objectives of project

The objective of this project is as follows:

1. To extend and refine knowledge relating to the building services technology and the
management system.
2. To develop student understanding of course materials and the current application in
construction industry.
3. Developing higher-order intellectual skills – evaluating skills and critical thinking skills.
4. Encourage knowledge sharing about subject taught.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Understand and explain relevant information related to the selected case study.
2. Identify the application, system, installation, process, benefit, problems and anything
relevant to support the documentation.
 Tasks – Methodology

In a group of 6 students, a topic will be given within the existing topic below:

1. Water Supply System (Treatment)

2. Fire Safety
3. Air-conditioning System (Unitary System)
4. Vertical Transportation System
5. Refuse Disposal System
6. Building Security

Case Study: You are required to choose a building for a case study either the building of the
community service or other suitable building (own arrangement). Based on the topic assigned,
you are required to identify the:

1. Application, system, installation or processes

2. Importance / significant
3. Factors or characteristics
4. Advantages and disadvantages / problems
5. Recommendations / solutions for future improvement.
6. Anything necessary (additional)

Please bring along your camera, video recorder and note pad during your observation. You
are encouraged to collect data from interview with expert / person in charge of the building /
site to support the documentation.

Submission Requirement: Documentation & Presentation

Format of A4 Report / Documentation

 A4 bound report complete with visual and photographs inclusive of detailing and
documentation of your project.
 Full report consist the acknowledgement, objectives, contents, bibliography and
appendix (if any).
 Visuals / photographs used in the submission must be clear and well communicated.
 Assumption can be made through references from books / drawings are allowed. DO
NOT PLAGIARISE. Application must be according to selected topic context.
 Please submit:
a) Full report
b) A CD for the soft copy of documentation

Video presentation

You are allowed for 8 minutes video presentation that will highlight the case study only.

 Demonstrated understanding of the project brief

 Quality and clarity of the documented drawings / photographs and detailing of the
system
 Materiality and richness of content
 Clear visual and written communication of your understanding of the project
 Appropriate use of drawings / photographs standard e.g. symbols / profiling, label and
specifications
