Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Abiotic Vs. Biotic: a story on living and non-living organisms.
Objectives:
Students will be able to… define the difference between abiotic and biotic organisms.
Students will be able to… evaluate if something is biotic or abiotic in a ecosystem.
State Standards:
Standard 5.L.4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of relationships among
biotic and abiotic factors within terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Context: Why are you teaching this particular lesson? What comes before this lesson in the
larger unit? What previous knowledge will students be bringing into the lesson? What comes
after this lesson in the larger unit? What are you teaching in order to prepare students for the
next lesson topic? The reason why we a talking about this lesson is because we just finished
discussing different ecosystem. The previous knowledge that the students will know are
animals in certain ecosystems, what they eat, what they live in and what they interact with.
I am teaching in this order because I don’t want to overload the students with a lot of
different information. They end goal is for them to pass a unit test to prove that they know
what we talked about
Data: How will students be grouped in this lesson? What hypothetical data will these groupings
be based on? How will data be collected in this lesson for future groupings and teaching?
The way the students will be grouped will be based on a small quiz they took the day
before. It will just for a participation grade, and it will also show what they may or may not
know or may or may not have and idea of. I will also give another one of those pop quizzes
to determine the grouping for the next class. This will serve as an “Exit Ticket.”
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

 Pin  iPad
 Paper  online google class room for pop
 Fish tank quiz
 Fish  I will also have an assignment on
 Fake decoration for the fish there to determine the difference
tank between biotic and abiotic.
 Premade flashcards
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes): For the introduction, I will tell the students to come in and
get settled down. I will have a small passage on the board for them to do for them to read.
The passage will be about what will be talking during that day, which will be abiotic and
biotic organisms. After the first five minutes I will make sure that everyone has read it.
Then I will talk about the specifics of biotic and abiotic. I will discuss the specifics
properties of each.
Teacher Directed (10 minutes): This portion will be a teacher lead small group. I will
go in depths detain about the subject. I will talk about how an abiotic organism is a none
living thing. I will discuss how a biotic organism is a living organism. Something like an
actual lecture will take place during this time. I will them question
Collaborative (10 minutes): During this portion, it will be a peer led group. The
student will take turns being the leader. The students will use this time to test each other on
the difference between biotic and abiotic organism. I will already have flash cards created
for them to quiz each other during this time. They will also keep track of the ones that each
other gets wrong so they can look over it and make sure that same mistake again.

Independent Digital (10 minutes): During this time, it will be students work on their
iPads by themselves. I will provide them a video to watch. The purpose of the video will be
for the students to be able to hear this content from another perspective. I feel like when
children here more then one person say something, they start to believe it. So When they
hear the information about abiotic and biotic from different platforms they will understand
the importance of it. During this time they will also be completing the activity in google
classroom about this topic.

Closure (10 minutes): During this section, we will all come together as a big group
and have an open discussion about the topic. I will ask a few questions to see who is
confident in what they learn and who is not as confident. I will also answer any question
that any student may have. After all the questions and answers are out of the way, I will
ask every student to complete the quiz in google class room. In order for them to leave, they
will have to come up to me and show me that they have completed the quiz.

Rationale:
(Multimedia 1= App or website): Why this piece of multimedia? How does it support
student learning and your standards and objectives? How do you know it is of high-
quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support
your rationale. How does this multimedia choice differentiate instruction for all learners
(consider differentiation and assistive technologies)?
Google class room:
This multimedia that I will be using is google classroom. I chose this one because it
is very convenient, and it is efficient. I can add all I need for the student to know on
this one simple website. I know this is high quality because Mr. Fegely has show us
how to use it and I’ve tested myself, and it if good for me.

(Multimedia 2= App, website, video, educational game, song, podcast, etc.): Why this
piece of multimedia? How does it support student learning and your standards and
objectives? How do you know it is of high-quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the
Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support your rationale. How does this multimedia
choice differentiate instruction for all learners (consider differentiation and assistive
technologies)?
YouTube Video:
This multimedia that I found was a video on YouTube. The reason why I chose to
have this video as part of the lesson I because it is talking about exactly what I will
be talking about. It just uses animation to go along with it. The reason why I know it
is high quality is because of the views it received and the comments,
