Opiniones
Lukacs naci� de padre cat�lico y madre jud�a. Sus padres se divorciaron antes de la
Segunda Guerra Mundial. Aunque educado como cat�lico, bajo las leyes antisemitas
h�ngaras de la �poca (que defin�an lo jud�o como una raza y no como religi�n) fue
clasificado como jud�o. Como tal fue obligado a incorporarse a un batall�n de
trabajo para jud�os conversos durante la guerra. Desert� tras la ocupaci�n alemana
en marzo de 1944 y escap� de la deportaci�n a los campos de extermino entre 1944-
45, sobreviviendo al sitio de Budapest. En 1946 emigr� a los Estados Unidos huyendo
de la creciente influencia comunista en el gobierno h�ngaro. A comienzos de los
a�os cincuenta, escribi� varios art�culos en Commonweal criticando al senador
Joseph McCarthy, a quien describe como un vulgar demagogo.2?
En su libro George F. Kennan and the Origins of Containment, 1944-1946 (1997), una
colecci�n de la correspondencia intercambiada entre los a�os 1994-1995 por Lukacs y
su �ntimo amigo George F. Kennan; tanto uno como otro critican la interpretaci�n de
la guerra fr�a propia de la Nueva Izquierda (New Left), seg�n la cual �sta fue
provocada por los Estados Unidos. Lukacs argumenta que aunque Joseph Stalin es el
responsable principal de su inicio, fue la presidencia de Dwight Eisenhower la que
desperdici� la oportunidad de acabarla en 1953 tras la muerte de aqu�l, lo que la
prolong� innecesariamente en las siguientes d�cadas.
El Hitler de la Historia
Desde 1977 Lukacs ha sido uno de los principales cr�ticos del historiador brit�nico
David Irving, a quien suele acusar de involucrarse en pr�cticas que no cumplen los
criterios acad�micos y de mantener posiciones neonazis. En una cr�tica al libro de
Irving Hitler's War (1977), Lukacs le calificaba de "revisionista de derechas", y
aunque reconoc�a que admiraba algunos de los primeros trabajos de este autor y
esperaba mucho de este libro, se hab�a decepcionado.5? Lukacs comentaba que Irving
hab�a utilizado acr�ticamente los recuerdos personales de los que conocieron a
Hitler para presentarle desde la luz m�s favorable posible.6? En su cr�tica,
tambi�n argumenta que aunque la Segunda Guerra Mundial tuvo un final desgraciado
por la dominaci�n sovi�tica del este de Europa, fue mejor eso que una Europa entera
en manos de Hitler.7?
�ltimos trabajos
En Democracy and Populism: Fear and Hatred (2005), Lukacs escribe sobre el estado
actual de la democracia estadounidense. Advierte que el populismo que percibe en
ascenso en los Estados Unidos les vuelve vulnerables a la demagogia. Considera que
esta degeneraci�n de la democracia liberal hacia el populismo es evidente en cosas
tales como el sentimiento popular, sustituto actual de lo que una vez fue opini�n
p�blica, y la propaganda y el infotainment (expresi�n compuesta de informaci�n y
entretenimiento), que han sustituido al conocimiento y la historia. En el mismo
libro, Lukacs critica la legalizaci�n del aborto, la pornograf�a, la clonaci�n y la
permisividad sexual, como marcas de decadencia, depravaci�n, corrupci�n y
amoralidad de la moderna sociedad americana.2?
M�s recientemente, Lukacs ha escrito Hitler and Stalin (2006), un estudio de los
dos l�deres enfocado en los acontecimientos que llevaron a la Operaci�n Barbarroja.
En 2007, Lukacs public� George Kennan: A Study of Character, biograf�a de su buen
amigo George F. Kennan basada en su privilegiado acceso a los papeles privados de
este. Su �ltimo libro Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat (2008) es una continuaci�n de
una serie de libros laudatorios sobre Winston Churchill.
