Preposition
Prepositions are words which link nouns, pronouns and phrases to other
words in a sentence.

Types of prepositions:

Nouns
Definition~ A word that is used to identify any of a class of
people, places, idea or things, or to name a particular one of
these.

People~ Paula, Lesley, Berenice, Delia.


Places~ Cloverdale High School, Santa Rosa.
Things~phones, books, tea.
Idea~ love, fear, joy, anger.
Types of Nouns
~ Common noun- is a noun that refers to people or things in general, e.g. boy, country, bridge,
city, birth, day, happiness.

~Proper Nouns- is a name that identifies a particular person, place, or thing, e.g. Steven, Africa,
London, Monday.

~Concrete noun- is a noun which refers to people and to things that exist physically and can be
seen, touched, smelled, heard, or tasted e.g. dog, building, coffee, tree, rain, beach, tune.

~Abstract noun-is a noun which refers to ideas, qualities, and conditions. Things that cannot be
seen or touched and things that have no physical reality e.g. truth, danger, happiness, time,
friendship, humour.

~Collective nouns-refer to groups of people or things, e.g. audience, family, government, team,
jury.
Verbs
~ Action Transitive- are action verbs that indicate that the subject of the sentence is
doing something to an object Sylvia kicked Juan under the table.

~ Action Intransitive- is transitive while an action verb with no direct object is


intransitive. arrive, go, lie, sneeze, sit, and die.

~ No‑Action to be- do not refer to an action as such, but represent a state of


being, need, opinion, sense, or preference. E.g like: am, are, was, were, is, has been,
and had.

~ No‑Action linking-not show any action e.g. They are a problem.

~ Auxiliary Verb(helping verb)-a verb used in forming the tenses, moods, and
voices of other verbs.be, do, have, will, shall, would, should, can, could, may,
might, must, ought.
Interjections-Delia
Definition: an abrupt remark, made especially as an aside or
interruption.
Types of Interjections:

Mild- Punctuated with a comma and ❖ Eww

Strong- Punctuated with an exclamation

Articles
Different types of adjectives are:
Descriptive:words that describe qualities of a noun or pronoun. Examples smell taste and texture.
Quantitative:Adjectives that refer to how much or how many of us. Example I drank half of my
mango drink.
Demonstrative:Adjectives that are used to modify a noun so that we know which specific person
place or thing mentioned. Example the house across the street is adorable.
Interrogative:Modify nouns and are used it in interrogator sentences. Examples
whose/what/which/Whose car will they give us.
Distributive: They are normally used with singular nouns. It includes “each”, “every”, “either”, and
“neither” and are used to refer members of a group as individuals.
Articles: A word that combines with a noun, stay it describe the nouns that that they proceeded.
In English they are only three articles: the, a, and an.
Pronoun
Definition - A word that can function by itself as a noun phrase and that refers either
to the participants in the discourse (e.g., I, you ) or to someone or something
mentioned elsewhere in the discourse (e.g., she, it, this ).
