Study of Siddhamsa Chart: D-24

—a true indicator of your studies

Maharshi Parasara has enumerated a number of divisional charts in his
immortal classic, widely known as Brihat Parasara Hora Sastram or shortly
known as BPHS. Siddhamsa or “Chaturvimsamsa” is one of the 16 Divisional
Charts or “Shodasha Varga”. While talking about the significance of the 16
divisional charts, Maharshi Parasara says the significance of Siddhamsa as:-

---iv*ayam! vedbaþ<ze (v&hTparazr haera zaôm! 7m! AXyay 3 ðaek )

-that means learning (for the purpose of earning) or educational achievements
should be seen from Siddhamsa, Chaturvimsamsa or for a person who deals
with Astrology software, it is D-24 chart for him.

Use of Siddamsa

Apart from using this chart to ascertain planetary strengths for Shodasha
Varga consideration, one can use it like a Rashi Chart, as one reads it for a
general reading. I have been studying this chart for the past few weeks as on
my archives & tried to relate this chart with the personal lives of the respective
people of those charts, I found that for studying a chart, specially for seeing
ones education , one should duly see the D-24 or Siddhamsa chart & deduce
necessary results.

The Ruling

Nevertheless, the time of birth is essential in this purpose for making the
divisional charts. Even a single change can change the lagna to the extent of
changes of planetary positions.

According to me, three lords are very important for reading this chart &
enumerate the results. We know, Lagna rules your own self, what you are etc.
In the context of Siddhamsa, the Lagna & its health should rule the “health” of
the studies. If the Lagna lord is afflicted or ill-disposed, one cannot have good
study, unless the 9th lord is well disposed or unafflicted. Even if the Siddhamsa
Lagna is afflicted, one might have to study against all odds (we often come to
know that a child is pursuing any course against the wish of family members
etc.) & this can be a valid rationale.

After then, we come to 5th house & its lord. The 5th house is the house
of higher studies or it shows the result of what you study. It also shows the
fruit of knowledge. It’s the house culture or it shows how well you can
cultivate your studies. Considering it to be the house of learning or higher
studies (generally from standard 11 to Bachelor’s degree), the house & its lord if
well disposed and then one will good studies, will be able to nurture ones
knowledge, work hard for that etc. However, if that lord or that house is
afflicted or ill-disposed, one cannot get results according to the efforts given or
might get a break, or delays etc.

Now comes the last lord, the 9th house & its lord ---- The house of luck,
name & fame. If the Siddhamsa Lagna is the “health of education”, then the 9th
house is luck of that education. With my humble point of view, I feel that
Siddhamsa Chart has more to do with the secondary studies, than primary
studies, as secondary studies are related to “Apara Vidya” or the education
which is for earning the bread. A well-placed 9th lord of Siddhamsa Varga, or
strong or one with benefic aspects will confer good results and one will “cross”
the hurdles with ease. Results will be reversed, if the said conditions do not
satisfy.

An interesting point to be noted here is that one can rectify a native’s

birth time using a Siddhamsa Chart. One should collect any previous
educational data, if there is any setback then the said lords must be in
auspicious positions & if the lords don’t occupy, then one must change the
time of birth accordingly. However, one should not solely rely upon this chart
only.

However, one should not apply the above rules as it is. A learned one
must know that an exalted inauspiciously placed planet (be it Lagna/5th/9th lord)
or if associated with benefics in inauspicious “Bhava” can confer good results
instead (if they are placed in enemy’s den, they can hardly give good results
when they are inauspiciously placed).

At this time, one might be interested to know how to see, whether one
will continue a course or discontinue one. I have seen, if the 5th lord happens
to occupy the Upachaya or 12th house, one is likely to discontinue a course or
join another or leave studying at all or may go for a “break”.

Fruition of Results 1

It is really difficult to refine the results, be it good or bad. I have tried my best
to related events with the periods & sub-periods. We consider that the
dispositor of the 9th lord (i.e. the lord of the house where 9th lord is posted) is
known as “Bhagyakarta” or “Bhagyakarak” planet. Good or bad results are
likely to take place during that period. Added to this, planets aspecting the 9th
house from Siddhamsa Lagna, planets in 9th from Siddhamsa Lagna have a role

to play in an individual’s education and planets aspecting the 9th lord.
However, the Karak for the setback also has a role to play and during the sub-
periods & periods of the Karak, or planets aspecting the Karak has a crucial role
to play, or the dispositor.

Some Guidelines

Some authorities are of the opinion that position of the Lagna lord in
Dusthanas viz., 6th, 8th & 12th house counted from lagna, is bad not at all,
however, if we apply the same for Siddhamsa study, the results will be
exceptionally good. However, if that same lord is afflicted posited in
Dusthanas or weak due to do debility, cannot confer anything positive.

With my humble knowledge, I consider the 2nd house to be house of primary

education, the language that one learns in ones home, generally it is
considered to be the mother’s duty, as Shastras say that a person’s first guru in
this world is his/hers mother. If we consider the 4th house to be the house of
mother, then the 10th house from house becomes the Lagna of the native itself
& the second from it becomes the 11th lord of mother. The mother will gain
(not financially) for giving birth to the noble child. What the native has learnt
in his home, he will go ahead with that and activates his 4th house, which
operates up to he appears for his standard 10 examinations. Now comes the
period of specialisation, he has to focus his career from now onwards, he
cultivates his interests, his attitude changes towards his career, thus he activates
his 5th house and joins a school to study +2, passes in his 12th standard and
joins a college to be a graduate or any diploma. Suppose, he has not quenched
his thirst with this education, he thinks of doing MBA or any post-graduation,
he finally activates his 9th house.

Thus five houses, not only from Rasi Chart, but also from Siddhamsa should be
judiciously analysed before talking about the prospective results.
Some Real-time examples

No article or research or be it any study work is considered to be completed,

unless supported by some examples. I will be dealing with some real time
examples, which will help others to know it.

Example 1

This is a native, who had been pursuing Hotel & Hospitality Administration;
however, whenever he appears for the finals in his 3rd years, either he fails in
more than two subjects or accused for using unfair means. If you look at his
Siddhamsa chart, you will see 5th lord goes to the 12th house, accompanied by
the lagna lord, aspected by the 4th lord who is debilitated. He appeared for his
3rd year finals on March, 2005. The results came in the month of May/June, &
the results were failing in three subjects. At that time, his Ketu dasa & Mars
bhukti was running. If you notice the dispositor of the Karak i.e. of Mercury is
Mars, dasa was running. He took re-admission & appeared for his paper,
where he was accused for using unfair means in his examination. It is quite
obvious when his Ketu Dasa Rahu Bhukti was running, where Rahu aspects the
9th house & its lord. For your information he has been a student of some
reputed schools in Kolkata, & his primary education was above average.

Example 2

Another male, who is pursuing Hotel & Hospitality Administration,

from his own city. Make a note, the Siddhamsa Lagna lord is posted in 8th
house while the 5th house lord joins him in 8th house. However, this was not a
case of failing; it was a case of setback for a year due to lack of attendance in
the college. However, one should keep in mind, that position of Ra-Ketu in
Siddhamsa lagna means resorting to unfair means in the studies. This is
prevalent in the last two examples. The dasa-antardasa for this native during
his “setback” (in March-April 2004) was Venus Dasa & Saturn Bhukti. The
result is quite obvious; Saturn the Lagna lord joins the 5th lord in 8th house (we
know Mercury under influence of malefic turns out to be a malefic). He took
re-admission, & is now doing well. The most possible saving grace was
conjunction of Venus (the 4th & 9th lord from Siddhamsa Lagna) & Sun (the 7th
lord from Siddhamsa Lagna) in 11th house from Siddhamsa Lagna. Again for
your information, he was a student of a reputed school in Calcutta till he
passed 10+2 & was good in studies.
Example 3

Another native, my “Astro-friend”, shared his birth data with me, for this
humble purpose. I don’t need to talk more or explain this chart in detail; quite
self explanatory. The except few good indication like 5th exalted in lagna, the
9th lord falls in 6th house, thus suffering from debility (however, cancellation of
debility is a saving grace). There was a break/setback in the native’s
studies/flow of studies, when he aspired to study MBA. For ones interest, I
have seen that if 9th lord is aspected by Sun, there are possibilities for a native
to study MBA or similar courses. Note, in this chart, Mercury being the 9th lord
is aspected by Sun. The saving grace of cancellation of debility helped to
continue his studies. However this happened during the Rahu dasa Rahu bhukti,
who is associated with 9th house in this chart.
Example 4

See, in this case the Siddhamsa Lagna lord of the native, Moon is in 12th
from the Lagna, has created many setbacks in this native’s studies. He has
changed his school twice before he passed standard ten. He appeared for his
twelve final, while failed in one subject. However, he withheld certain facts,
still with my confidence I correctly found out that during Venus dasa Mercury
Bhukti. Note that the dispositor of Moon is Mercury. He never cleared his
paper, in which he failed after appearing for his standard twelve final exams,
in the year 2004.

Example 5

I don’t need to explain this chart; if you remember the pointers which I
mentioned before, & apply in this chart, you will well understand or will be
able to “read it like a story book”. Few good points, but not well-placed
planets, hindered educational success in this native’s chart. There was not a
single break until he entered Mercury dasa Saturn Bhukti/Jupiter Bhukti. In
both ways, this can be proved. Sun’s dispositor is Saturn, which is capable
enough to bring a break. Again, Jupiter being the 5th lord is in 12th has brought
in the setback. Since Sun is in the enemy’s tent, it has more capability to bring
the setback (or its dispositor) than the exalted Jupiter, whose dispositor is in 9th
from Siddhamsa Lagna.

Example 6

Now some positive charts. This is a chart of a native who is doing his
“second” graduation after successfully completing his B.Com (Hons.) in
accountancy, from Calcutta University. However, the disposition of 9th lord in
Mooltrikona/own house in 2nd house provoked him to study further & to join
the hospitality industry. However, in spite of being the 6th Lord, Saturn in his
own house in 5th house, has done a great job for him, & he has been quite
successful in his studies. The 9th lord is being aspected by Jupiter, Saturn, Moon
and Rahu, probably due to aspect of Moon & Saturn he is specialising in F & B
Service. Note he joined Institute of Hotel Management (reflecting a
professional course) during Jupiter dasa & Venus bhukti.
Example 7

Some powerful combinations in this chart, has helped this native to raise his
head against all odds in his education. Sun, though the Lagna lord in 8th house,
is in friendly house, while receiving an aspect Mars, a Yogkarak for the Leo
Lagna (Siddhamsa Lagna being the Leo in this case), also conjoined with the
exalted Venus. Nothing much to say about this chart. Chart of a successful
person, who has never failed in achieving his dream. Once this native asked
me whether he can do MBA, but I nodded by head against his wish, which has
come true.
Example 8

I was quite surprised to see this divisional chart, when the mother came
to me with the un-rectified birth time. If, the Siddhamsa Lagna is Sagittarius,
then the Lagna lord becomes Jupiter, who is in 8th but exalted, while the 5th
lord becomes Mars, who is in own house, & the 9th lord falls in 4th house,
which are good indicators for one to have a good education. I saw that few
seconds can change the birth time, so when I changed the birth time to
8:00:27 am, the Siddhamsa Lagna becomes Capricorn, whose Lord is Saturn,
exalted in 10th house (a good sign), the 9th lord is in 7th house (though an
unfriendly sign, but well-disposed and will give positive results), but the
disposition of 5th lord is not good. Venus being the 5th lord is in 12th house,
which is not friendly. Also, Saturn aspects the 5t h lord & the 9th lord, so I
clarified with the mother, whether there was any delay to complete her son’s
graduation or not & she said yes. So, by Vishnu’s grace, my assessment was
correct. I came to know that native became a graduate when he was 26/27
years old, when Saturn dasa & Jupiter bhukti was operating. Note Jupiter is
with the 9th lord.
Example 9- A prediction yet to come true

A friend who is pursuing B.Com (Hons.) from Calcutta University. If the

birth time is accurate, then there is every possibility for the native to have a
“break” in his course. Now, he is going through Saturn Dasa & Saturn Bhukti,
who becomes 9th lord, debilitated & in 12th house from Siddhamsa Lagna
(Neechbhanga is there though). However, if the time of birth is 8/9 seconds
earlier, then the scenario changes & will be auspicious for the native. I am yet
to witness the prediction, if no such odds happen, then the time of birth must
be rectified.
The 4th house

If the Siddhamsa says about the health of education, then 4th house will say the
happiness & house of education or “school” itself. For this purpose, both the
4th lord & 4th house from the Siddhamsa Lagna must be dealt properly. Planets
like Mars, Mercury, and Venus happen to occupy the 4th house, then it might
mean the “age” of the school from which the native has studied. If they are
aspected by planets like Jupiter, Saturn it might mean that they will exist for
many years (we often hear of closure of schools etc). An aspect of Jupiter will
mean a very reputed school & old school, while Saturn’s aspect will mean an
old school only, where the methods of teaching are very old. Often tough to
get admission. A strong 4th house reflects good elementary education, while a
weak reflects the opposite. A judicious astrologer should keep in mind all these
before announcing his results.

Role of Mercury & Jupiter

Our classics say Mercury is for Intelligence. In Siddhamsa chart, if mercury is

not well-disposed, the native can feel the lack of same, while a strong/well-
disposed Mercury will prove to be auspicious for the subject, provided he is
free from any malefic influence. Another important aspect is its role in
Siddhamsa chart. Nevertheless, Mercury is the natural “karaka” for education.
However, mercury is subjected to material/ elementary education. He has got
nothing to do with spiritual study. In Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, while talking
of certain dasa effects during the Dasa/ Bhukti of Mercury, it is said that one
will learn Vedas etc. However, Vedas are not for spiritual study as in Mundaka
Upanishad Vedas & Vedangas have been associated with “Material Study”
(Apara-Vidya). In various astrological works, association of mercury & sun
have eulogised to be a good combination for a person to be good in
mathematics. True, that people with intelligence can do good in mathematics.
However, exchange of houses by Sun & mercury in Siddhamsa or conjunction
of Mercury-Sun or even aspecting each other is a good indication for certain to
be good in mathematics. It is still not known why our sages of the lore
ascribed results to be a good mathematician for a person having Sun-Mercury
in Rashi chart (however, some conditions have been mentioned too).

Jupiter is not only the significator of wealth, but also indicator for spiritual
learning. One will read various Shastras or theological works, provided Jupiter
is strong in Siddhamsa chart. In this case, if Saturn aspects the 5th house, the
native can read Upanishads (meant for Sannyasis), or the Jupiter. While,
planets like Venus can tend him to study some interesting magazines, which are
related material world.

Siddhamsa Chart & Competition

Malefics or functional malefics help in winning competitive examinations

provided their dasa is going on. Also the strength of 6th house & 6th lord (from
the Siddhamsa Lagna) should be judged accordingly. However, ranking in
classes should not be judged from the 6th house. Rather it should be seen from
the strength of the concerned houses & lords. 2Results will vary according to the
operating Dasas & Bhuktis.

Conclusion

This is my very negligible attempt to study the Siddhamsa charts of various

persons. This little contribution will help to tune the results of charts & help
them to correct the time of birth, if events don’t match.

As I mentioned from time to time, the astrologer has to be judicious before

pronouncing the results.

I wish overall happiness for those who are related to this Divine science or
“Veda Nayanam” as Maharshi Parasara says. May luck bestow upon those
who have helped me & encouraged to carry on with this work.
