information.

State Senior High School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency is one

of senior High School in Riau that offers English to students. The curriculum that

is used is school based curriculum (KTSP). Special for English subject the passing

score (SKL) is 78. Based on school based curriculum of senior high school 2006,

reading is aiming at “to comprehend the meaning of monolog/ essay text reports,

narrative, dan analytical exposition in daily life.”

During preliminary study at State Senior High School 4 Tambusai Utara

Rokan Hulu Regency, especially at the eleventh grade of students. It is clear that

the writer found some problems in teaching and learning English especially in

reading. The main problem is about student comprehension in reading text. Their

ability in reading especially in term narrative text is still far from the expectation

of curriculum. The problems of students can be proven by the writer through their

own achievements (the criteria of students’ minimum passing grade). Therefore,

the writer would like to apply her method of reading. The method is called OK5R

method. According to Istarani (2012:167) said that OK5R method that is

systematic to help students in reading comprehension. This method is

implemented in the following procedures:

1. Teacher considers topic and sub topic to get describing information.

2. Teacher finds out describing of the information generally.

3. Teacher ask students to find out key ideas.

4. Teacher ask students to read the text.

5. Teacher ask students to make a note or record.

6. Teacher ask students to resite students’ comprehension of the text.

7. Teacher ask students to review their comprehension.

8. Teacher ask students to reflect their comprehension on reading.

Based on the preliminary study of the writer conducted at State Senior

High School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency, especially at the eleventh

grade of students, the writer found the following phenomena:

1. Most of students were not interested in reading English text especially

on narrative text.

2. Most of students do not know about the meaning of vocabulary on the

narrative text.

3. Most of students were difficult to predict the content of the narrative

text.

4. Most of students were still confused to identification the content of

narrative text.

5. Most of students did not understand with the structure on narrative

text.

Based on the problems illustrated above, thus, the writer is interested in

observing the problems above into a research project entitle “the effect of Using

OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite, review, riflect) Method on

Students’ Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text at State Junior High School

4 Tambusai Utara Rokan hulu Regency”.

B. Problem

1. Identification of the problem

a. Why were most of students not interested in reading English text

especially on narrative text?

b. Why did most of students not know about the meaning of vocabulary

on the narrative text ?

c. Why were most of students difficult to predict the content of the

narrative text?

d. Why were most of students still confused to identification the content

of narrative text?

e. Why did most of students not understand with the structure in narrative

text?

2. The limitation of the Problem

Based on the identification of the problem above, this research only

focuses on the effect of using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record,

recite, review, riflect) Method students reading comprehension on narrative

text ability at the eleventh grade of State Senior High School 4 Tambusai

Utara Rokan Hulu Regency.

3. The Formulation of Problem

a. How is the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text which is

taught by using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite,

review, riflect) Method at the eleventh grade of State Senior High

School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency?

b. How is the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text which is

taught without using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite,

review, riflect) Method at the eleventh grade of State Senior High

School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency?

c. Is the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text taught by using

Method higher that those who are taught without using OK5R

C. Reasons for Choosing the Title

1. The problem of the research are very interesting and challenging to be

investigated in term teaching and learning reading.

2. This title of this research is relevant with the writer as a student of

English Education Department.

3. As far as the writer knows, this topic has never been researched yet.

D. The Objective and Significance of the Research

1. The Objective of the Research

a. To find out the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text which

is taught by using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite,

review, riflect) Method at the second year students of State Senior High

School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency.

b. To find out the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text which

is taught without using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite,

review, riflect) Method at the eleventh grade of State Senior High

School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency.

c. To find out that the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text

taught by using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite,

review, riflect) Method is higher than those who are taught without

using OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite, review, riflect)

Method at the eleventh grade of State Senior High School 4 Tambusai

2. The Significance of the Research`

After conducting this research, the writer hopes:

a. This research finding is expected to increase the writer knowledge

about research, especially the writer’s scientific insight regarding

OK5R (overview, key ideas, read, record, recite, review, riflect)

Method.

b. This research finding is expected to give information about students’

Reading narrative text ability after being taught by using OK5R

(overview, key ideas, read, record, recite, review, riflect) Method.

c. This research finding is expected to give contribution to English in

varying teaching method especially in reading course.

E. Method of the Research

The kind of this research is experimental research. According to Marguerite

(2006) experimental research is about studying the effect or the impact of an

approach under methods in educational research stringent and controlled

conditions to make statements of causality. It means that this research try to find

effect that is given by the variable x toward variable y. There are two variables in

this research, they are: mind’s eye strategy as an independent variable, symbolized

by X and students’ reading comprehension on narrative text ability as dependent

variable symbolized by Y.

The target population of this research is the eleventh grade of State Senior

High School 4 Tambusai Utara Rokan Hulu Regency. They consist of 3 classes

(109 students). Considering that the population of this research is bigger, thus, the

writer should take the sample of population of the research. In this research, the

writer will take two classes of the population. In this research, the writer will use

cluster sampling technique. According to Siregar (2013: 59) cluster sampling is

technique of taking sample by dividing the group of population based on cluster.

The data collection of this research will be collected by using observation and

test (pretest and posttest). Meanwhile, the collected data will be analyzed by using

the following formula:
