Motoharu Onuki
Project Associate Professor
Division of Environmental Studies
Graduate Program in Sustainability Science-Global Leadership Initiative
University of Tokyo

Dear Mr. Motoharu Onuki,

I am writing to apply for the scientific research summer internship position at Onuki Laboratory in the Graduate
Program in Sustainability Science-Global Leadership Initiative (GPSS-GLI). I saw your listing on the UTSIP
website. Please accept my enclosed resume for consideration.

I believe that this internship program would provide me with the ideal opportunity to assist your organization,
broaden my horizon by gaining international exposure, equip myself a global mindset, and to expand my
research skills. In near future, I’m hoping that after completing UTSIP experience, I’d be able to develop my
research/final project related to disaster mitigation as a form of my contribution to the community.

I have the formal learning necessary for the position. Most of them are related to the environmental, and
economic field of studies. Additionally, as the current Scientific Division’s person in charge (PC) at the Urban
and Regional Planning Student Association, and with almost two years of experience facilitating students from
the Urban and Regional Planning Department in research and skill development. I have developed excellent
managerial skills that can translate well to the research project.

My first experience getting involved in research was in 2017. It was a senior year student’s final project. In
general, the topic is about the influence of student settlements around the ITS campus area on local communities.
My part in the research project was about collecting data. I arranged interviews related to living conditions and
community and student preferences regarding the place of residence. The findings were quite surprising, the
increase in student settlements around the campus area caused the building rent and land prices also increasing.
In addition, there is also segregation between the community and students, this is due to the increase in student
settlements causing the local community to choose to move because of the expensive land prices, as well as the
individualistic culture of student life. Overall, I was delighted with this research experience.

In the late of 2018, I was involved in Global Project-based Learning (GPbL) as a participant. The event was
held in Surabaya by ITS International Office in collaboration with Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT).
Having the experience to work with non-Indonesian partners has helped me to build confidence in my
communication skills. I worked with two other students from SIT when managing the project to develop a
traditional village in the City of Surabaya. With the help of my partners, I conducted an analysis and formulated
the solution to develop the traditional village. Our project received a special commendation from the director
of the event for the detail and our dedication as the best poster.

I strongly believe that I would be an asset to your program. Confident my competency makes me a solid
candidate for this opening, I respectfully submit my resume for your review. I look forward to hearing from
you.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Saryulis
