Introduction Time
Intro Students will come in from recess and will find a book and read while

Learning Activity #1 Read: Not My Girl
Teacher Notes: Assessments/  Gather students on the carpet
Differentiation  Introduce and/or review significance of Residential Schools 15min
 Remind students – wait until the end for questions
 ASK: how is school different now?
 ASK: why is it important that we remember these stories?
Learning Activity #2 Make Heart Stakes
Teacher Notes: Assessments/  Give students pre-cut hearts to decorate
Differentiation  Encourage students to think of what they would want to share with
the children or survivors 25min
 As children finish, they can go see Sylvia to hot glue a stake to their
heart

Learning Activity #3 Plant Seeds & Hearts


Teacher Notes: Assessments/  As a class, plant seeds in multiple flower boxes or pots to be placed
Differentiation around the school

 Review what plants need to be well cared for
 Have a moment of silence, reaffirm the meaning behind the hearts
 Clean up & return to class
