How the Tiger Got Its Stripes

Once upon a time, there was a tiger who lived in the jungle with many animals. The
tiger was a very proud animal. It had fangs, claws, paws and a majestic golden coat.
One day, the tiger saw the big water buffalo working for a strange small animal.
This animal did not look big, and he did not have horns or fangs. The tiger was puzzled. It
went to the water buffalo and discovered that this animal was called Tom and that he had
something that is called ‘wisdom’.
The tiger was envious of Tom. It wanted some wisdom, too. It knew that it was the
tiger roared. Tom was very afraid of the tiger. He knew that he would never be able to
defeat the tiger with his own strength. Tom decided to use his wisdom.
“I’ll go home now to get some wisdom for you,” Tom said. “But first, I have to
ensure that you won’t eat my goats. So I’ll have to tie you to the tree.” So Tom tied the
tiger’s tail, paws and head to the tree. Then, he walked away together with his goats.
The tiger was left tied to the tree for a long time. It was hungry and upset. One day,
it managed to break free. It wanted to look for Tom, the goats and the wisdom that it had
asked for. But it could not find them anywhere. At last, the tiger was exhausted and it
decided to stop looking.
The tiger went to the river to drink some water. It looked in the water to admire its
own reflection. To the tiger’s surprise, its beautiful golden coat was now covered with black
stripes!
