Unit 4 – Outcome 2: School Assessed Coursework

Name:

Outcome 2: Students will participate in a variety of training methods, and

design and evaluate training programs to enhance specific fitness components.

Task 3: Structured Questions

• Students must respond to a series of structured questions which link

chronic adaptations of the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular
systems to training methods and improved performance.

• The task will be marked out of 40 (converted to a score out of 20) and
contributes 20% of the marks allocated for Unit 4.

• You will have 60 minutes to complete the task. No notes or materials may
be accessed during this time

Question 1 (14 marks)

A young track and field athlete attempting to improve their performance in the 1500m has
engaged in a training program that involves the following training methods;

• Fartlek Training
• Long Interval Training

She has applied the training principles appropriately training 5 times per week for at least 30
minutes in each session. She has also ensured that her average heart rate is between 70 and
85% of her HR max.

a. As a result of this type of training, the athlete is likely to see an increase in the volume
of the left ventricle and stroke volume and a decrease in heart rate at rest and during
sub-maximal exercise. Discuss the relationship between ventricle volume, stroke
volume, heart rate and cardiac output at rest, during sub-maximal intensity and at
maximal intensity. (4 marks)

b. An increase in AVO2 Difference is also likely to occur as a result of training in this

manner over a period of time. Outline AVO2 diff. and two chronic adaptations of the
muscular system that have a direct impact on it. (3 marks)

c. Would these training methods be more appropriate for improving LIP or improving
lactate tolerance? (1 mark)

2
d. Outline the differences in the training that would be utilised to improve LIP versus
those used to improve lactate tolerance. (6 marks)

Question 2 (9 marks)

The table below shows the pre and post test results for an individual engaged in a training
program designed to improve muscular strength, muscular power and agility.

Fitness Test Pre-Test Post Test

Vertical Jump Test 55 cm 63 cm

Max Leg Press Test 140 kg 165 kg

Semo-agility Test 18.10 sec 16.72 sec

a. Identify which of the following athletes is most likely to have completed the tests listed
above; Field Hockey Player, Sprint Cyclist, Weight Lifter, Volleyball Player. (1 mark)

3
b. The athlete involved utilised Resistance Training in their program to improve these
fitness components. Use the table below to outline how their resistance training would
have been planned to ensure improvement in muscular strength and power occurred.
(4 marks)

Variable Muscular Strength Muscular Power

Resistance 80 - 95% RM

Sets 2-4

Repetitions 3-5

Recovery (between sets) 3 - 4 min

c. Name and describe two chronic adaptations that would result in the improvements in
each of muscular strength and power. (4 marks)

Question 3 (4 marks)
The women’s world record for the 100m is was set by Florence Griffith-Joyner at 10.49
seconds in 1988. The fastest Australian woman in the 100m is Melissa Breen who set a time of
11.11 seconds in 2014. Outline how a difference in fuel substrate levels attained through
training may account for the difference in the times.

Question 4 (13 marks)

An individual who includes long interval training in their plan to improve aerobic capacity
completes sessions similar to that outlined below;

b. Pulmonary diffusion is known to increase as a result of long term training using
methods such as those outlined above. Describe the process of gaseous exchange
within the lungs. (2 marks)

c. Name two chronic adaptations of the respiratory system that contribute to an increase
in pulmonary diffusion. (2 marks)

d. Describe glycogen sparing and how it enhances performance in endurance events.
