The
home stretch
The hip flexor, or psoas muscle (pronounced SO-as), lies along the front of the spine to the
side of the belly button and down toward the front of the hip. This muscle is tight on most
individuals due to our sitting posture that we are in the majority of our day.

TO STRETCH THE RIGHT-SIDE PSOAS:

1. Kneel on a towel or pillow. Place your right lower leg, ankle and foot slightly outside
of your knee. Your left hip and knee are bent to 90°. Your left hand can be placed on a
chair or against a wall for support.
2. Your right hand is placed on your buttocks. Tighten the buttocks muscle and tuck your
hips under. Draw your belly button in toward your spine. Keep your shoulders centered
over your hips and don’t arch your back.
3. Use your left leg to pull your pelvis forward, leading with the front of the right hip.
The stretch should be felt in the front of your right leg/thigh. Further stretch can be
obtained by maintaining this stretch position and side bending the trunk to the left.
4. Stretch for 30 seconds, two to three times. Switch sides and repeat with the other side.
