disagreement.

ANTICIPATED LEARNER OUTCOME:

Learners will be able to talk about some types of personalities and qualities which are
required to have a good relationship in the context of love and marriage.

CLASSROOM RESOURCES OR MATERIALS:

A snapshot containing some information about what men and women look for in a partner in
North America.

GROUP:
ASA IIIB, 8 students who are registered at Academia Antioqueña de Aviación in the Flight
Attendant program.

COURSE:
Level 3, Intermediate.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND LESSON SEQUENCE:

1. The teacher will explain that this lesson will be about relationships with a focus on
love and marriage.

2. STARTING QUESTIONS:

a. The teacher will introduce the topic by asking these questions:

-What do you think women look for in a partner in our society?
-Now, what do you think men look for in a partner in our society?
-Are there any important differences between these two preferences?

b. The teacher will write the students’ ideas on the board under the headings What
women look for in a partner and What men look for in a partner. At the beginning
these ideas are expressed in isolated words. Some words correspond to vocabulary
the students already know Ex: Intelligence, Love, etc. Also some students are
expected
to ask the teacher how to say some words in English and he will provide the
corresponding terms.

3. The teacher will ask students to read the snapshot. When they finish, he will answer
some vocabulary questions they may have in order to clarify terms.

4. MIDDLE QUESTIONS. FORMING AN OPINION:

a. The teacher will elicit some comments on any cultural differences between the
information in the snapshot and the information given by the students. He will
provide the appropriate structures for the students to express an opinion or point
of
view about something. Ex: I think, To my mind, In my opinion, etc. The teacher will
ask this question:
-Do you think that there are some cultural differences between what people
look
for a partner here and what people look for a partner in North America?
Thus, the students will identify common and different elements in the two
contexts.
5. END OF THE SESSION QUESTIONS. DISCUSSING IDEAS:

a. The teacher will set a round table for the students to discuss some ideas on the
topic.
He will explain the purpose and the rules of the activity and how the students will
participate. Students will take turns for expressing their concepts.

b. Before beginning the discussion, the teacher will provide some useful expressions
which will help the students argue, agree and disagree with their partners. Ex: For
me, As far as I’m concerned, I agree, I disagree, etc.

c. To initiate the discussion, the teacher will present these questions:

-What do you think are the five most important things to look for in a partner?
-How would you rate these five aspects of a relationship? -Which one do you
think
is the most important for you? -Why? -Which one is the least important?
-Why?
-Who is the ideal partner for you?
Through asking these questions, the students will be able to give the reason of
their
answers. They are expected to use some connector terms they already know such
as
because and since, which is a sign of the use of complex language.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
The teacher will determine a score based upon his students’ performance in the round table.
