The writer of the book Viet Thanh Nguyen has talked about many famous and powerful writers
that were themselves once refugees including Joseph Azam, David Bezmogis , Fatima Bhutto,
Ariel Dorfman and Reyna Grande, who came from Mexico to America as an undocumented and
illegal migrant. The author Viet Thanh Nguyen narrated about the Reyna Grande and her critical
interrogation of distinction between a refugee and a migrant. Reyna Grande’s father sent her and
other children through a smuggler to take them to their home town in North America, so that they
can start a new life there. So, at the age of nine and a half years she became an illegal person
having undocumented and unpermitted to cross the US border. She then tried to explain the
difference between a refugee and an immigrant. They both have a one thing common and that is
displacement. But despite of this common thing, there is nothing similar between both.
Immigrants are a way better than the refugees. Immigrants don’t have to go through the
separation. Although they were somehow not managed to flee together in the migration but still
there is some edge of being migrant over the refugees. She was also unsure about being meeting
the criteria for asylum as there are some regulations to follow and to prove to the higher
authorities to seek international protection and covered by the refugee status. She added that the
uncertainty about their living in the US have initiated many traumatic and depressed stories.
They were not declared neither the official refugees nor they could fulfill the criteria for asylum.
Being undocumented and fearful of deportation, she led her and family to the unpleasant
experiences of her life. Unemployment and poverty was the very first barrier that came across
their paths. There was always a psychological fear of being socially and morally not accepted by
socially and morally. Her father and mother left her when she even not developed her reminding
ability. She was raised by her relatives and considered a burden to them all. The separation
between her and her parents continued till she became assimilated. Having asylum status puts
another barrier between her and her parents. After a surge in unaccompanied and undocumented
child immigrants were thrown to the detention centers for court cases even without legal
