Part (A): The Displayed by Nguyen

The writer of the book Viet Thanh Nguyen has talked about many famous and powerful writers

that were themselves once refugees including Joseph Azam, David Bezmogis , Fatima Bhutto,

Ariel Dorfman and Reyna Grande, who came from Mexico to America as an undocumented and

illegal migrant. The author Viet Thanh Nguyen narrated about the Reyna Grande and her critical

interrogation of distinction between a refugee and a migrant. Reyna Grande’s father sent her and

other children through a smuggler to take them to their home town in North America, so that they

can start a new life there. So, at the age of nine and a half years she became an illegal person

having undocumented and unpermitted to cross the US border. She then tried to explain the

difference between a refugee and an immigrant. They both have a one thing common and that is

displacement. But despite of this common thing, there is nothing similar between both.

Immigrants are a way better than the refugees. Immigrants don’t have to go through the

separation. Although they were somehow not managed to flee together in the migration but still

there is some edge of being migrant over the refugees. She was also unsure about being meeting

the criteria for asylum as there are some regulations to follow and to prove to the higher

authorities to seek international protection and covered by the refugee status. She added that the

uncertainty about their living in the US have initiated many traumatic and depressed stories.

They were not declared neither the official refugees nor they could fulfill the criteria for asylum.

Being undocumented and fearful of deportation, she led her and family to the unpleasant

experiences of her life. Unemployment and poverty was the very first barrier that came across

their paths. There was always a psychological fear of being socially and morally not accepted by
socially and morally. Her father and mother left her when she even not developed her reminding

ability. She was raised by her relatives and considered a burden to them all. The separation

between her and her parents continued till she became assimilated. Having asylum status puts

another barrier between her and her parents. After a surge in unaccompanied and undocumented

child immigrants were thrown to the detention centers for court cases even without legal

representation. Long story short, after many traumatic and distressful experiences, she and her

family became legal resident of US under a liberty signed by Ronald Reagan.
