MISSION VISION STATEMENT
What it Means to be a Healthcare Leader?

This paper will outline my beliefs, assumptions, and values of leadership as they related

to these four concepts: leader, person, health and the environment. I will talk about my own

experiences working in a hospital as a medical doctor and how those experiences inform my

definition of a healthcare leader.

Leader

In the modern-day healthcare culture, a leader has many meanings. My definition of a

leader in the healthcare industry is a doctor, a nurse, a pharmacist, a technician, or any healthcare

provider that sets an example and leads other to become successful in their profession without

the need gain anything from them. They do it because they want to advance their organization

and culture into the coming healthcare generation. I see leaders as a selfless individual who

spread their knowledge to promote the community that they serve, increasing the efficiency of

care and keeping standards in the healthcare organization. The contributor Glenn Llopis (Llopis,

G. 2014) stated that the 21st-century leader must have the ability to make the most out of every

situation. They are courageous and not afraid to challenge the status quo and push the boundaries

to make things better. Because of these qualities and many others, the best leaders know how to

get the most out of people; they enable the full potential of others. My father is a professor of

medicine and consulting cardiologist, he once told me at a younger age that promoting change

starts at oneself first and then spreads out like wildfire spreading everywhere it touches, so you

have to practice what you preach. This was engraved in my mind, to become a great healthcare

leader in this culture you have to start the change in yourself first before spreading it to other. It's

an important concept that I cherished throughout my medical career and profession.

MISSION VISION STATEMENT
Person

Future healthcare leaders who are working as doctors, nurses, and pharmacist must judge

their success on the patient’s ability to realize their self-worth, pride and achieve an insight of

belonging. During my med school years, my professors often ask us about our approach to the

management of a patient, will we manage the illness, or will we first manage the patient.

Usually, I would not understand my professor's conception of the management. My thought was

that treatment of the disease or the patient is the same. However, I failed to follow the most

important lesson that my professor teaching, is that treatment of the individual first by respecting

their wishes, treating them with respect, and comforting them in their stress is significant to the

contribution of the patient's wellness.

Health

According to an article (Grad, F. P. 2002), health is defined as a state of complete

physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Others

correlate health and personal satisfaction together. I believe this to be true and that health plays a

significant role in a happy and productive life for everyone. It is the tool that provides a person

spiritual strength inside. It is the reason why everyone in the world one pursues a state of

complete balance spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Environment

As future healthcare leaders, our understanding of healthcare should be by promoting an

ideal working environment in the hospital setting. This is done by promoting diversity of other

cultures, equality for all, and helping others to spread these ideas into the community. I know

that it is silly to emphasize these basics concept but often times I see mistakes that hinders this

concept of equality and diversity in the workplace. There were times I saw harassment of fellow

colleagues from a higher ranked officer and its destroyed my colleague's self-confidence to work

and perform adequately. I cannot accept this culture of insults, harassment, and bigotry in the

healthcare environment and I implore other healthcare leaders to do the same. We must fight

these imbalances for the sake of the healthcare advancement.

Discussion

My philosophy that guides my medical profession is a passion for developing the

knowledge of growth for all and the defenseless. As a Healthcare leader, I will promote diversity

and equality for all genders, spread my experience to my colleagues and the community, and will

strive in keeping the highest healthcare standards for the betterment of my patient’s well-being

and the community.
