BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

 Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events,
include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order,
and provide some sense of closure.

2. Objectives:
SWBAT -
 Students will explain some of the main events of the story.
 Students will tell short stories.

3. Materials/Equipment:

 The book if a bus could talk


 Color paper
 Worksheet.
 Colors pencils
 Glue.
 Scissors.
 Crayons
 Markers.

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
 Start by showing the cover of the book and ask students what they see on the cover. Read
the title and discuss what they think the story is going to be about. Ask students y the
show of hand who knows who was Rosa Park, ask students to share what they know
about Rosa Park. Ask students if they think that what they said will be in the story. Start
reading the book and stop after reading each page, because every page has important
information. Have little discussions with kids about the event list in the book. Take more
time to discuss about the major events in the story for example when Rosa went to jail for
braking the segregation, when Dr. Martin Luther King jr, appears in the story ask students
if they know who he was. After reading the book with help and support discuss with the
students what was the most important event that happen in the story. Discuss if what they
would do different if they were Rosa Park. Ask students what they learn from the story.
Discuss if buses can talk in the real world.
B. Extension activity:
 Tell students that today they will create their own buses and will tell their own story. Give
every student a worksheet of a bus, they will decorate the bus however they want, they
can use colors pencil, color paper, crayons and markers. Give about 10 minutes for
students to create their own buses. Ask students to raise their hand when they are done, if
they need extra time give them a few more minutes. Walk around the classroom to see if
students need help. Ask students to name their buses. Students will get in small groups or
two or three and tell their classmate their own story. The story can be about any person, it
can be famous person or it can be about someone that they know, or they can create their
own story. Each children will have a turn to tell their stories. Ask students to raise they
hand when all members of the group have finished telling their stories.

5. Closure:

 Share with the class a brief resume of their story.
