Name of lesson - Every place has a value

Grade Level - First Grade

Suggested group size - It would include the whole class spilt into two groups.

Subject - Math (Place Values)

Common Core Standard - Use, model, and identify place value positions (ones, tens) [NS/PS
1.1.8]

Objective - The student will understand the differences in value from ones to the tens place.
They will be able to arrange blocks in tens and ones to represent their values.

General Goal - At the end of the lesson the student will understand that a 1 in the ones place is
10 times smaller than a 1 in the tens place and vice versa.

Materials:
The materials needed for this lesson are:
• Computer/ Smart board
• Worksheet on place value and how you can represent a number.
• Flash Cards with numbers.
• Pencils.
• Two bucket/ containers.
• Blocks representing ones and tens.
• A set of oversized dice.

Procedures:
1. Tell the students that today we will be covering a new idea for the day, that deals with
numbers and the way their value changes, and the change depends on the position they
are placed.
2. To begin go over the worksheet that explains the idea of place value. This sheet will
show the students that the amount of a number changes when placed in a different place
value. For example, a one in the tens place is no longer just a one, it now represents 10
ones.
3. Go over the concept of place value with the help of the smart board, after the concept has
been fully explained then move on to showing them examples on the board with number
provided by the students.
4. On the board write some examples so the students can get an idea of what the lesson
entails.
a. For example, 33 is the same as 3 tens and 3 ones, this should be drawn on the
board as:

and = 33
5. Explain that to get a better understanding of the idea of for the day, we will be splitting
into groups where the students will use blocks to help them solve the problems.

Independent practice - The students will work through the handout, they will use
manipulatables in the form of blocks that represent either 1 or 10 to help them visualize the
concept of place value.

Assessment Based on Objectives - To assess the student’s ability to determine the value of a
number, a worksheet will be handed out. This worksheet will have random numbers in a column
on the left side. The students will then have to correctly write the different ways that a number
can be broken down and represented.
For example:
_6_ Tens
63 _3_ Ones _60_ +_3_ =_63
_63 In all

The students will answer multiple questions like these and this will be graded.

Connections to other subjects – Students can apply these skills in other subjects that require
counting by tens.

Special needs student – If I had a student who had a learning disability, I would be sure to have
them sit closer to me so that I could be more readily available to him/ her. I al so imagine that I
could have a Spanish speaking student in my class, I speak Spanish, so I would take extra time
to make sure that the student is understanding the material well.
