The regular board meeting took place on February 28, 2019. They started the meeting
with having trustee Garvey lead the flag salute with Sunrise Mountain ROTC. It was interesting
to see that the Sunrise Mountain ROTC were invited to open up the meeting. They then
proceeded to the 30 seconds of silence. The meeting was very long about 3 hours to be more
precise. This meeting is very beneficial and relevant to the content in this course.
We just learned about what can be done with religion in the course. At the beginning of
this board meeting, they initiated with the pledge and salute followed by 30 seconds of silence. It
obviously didn't violate the establishment clause in this case. Since the board is not broadly
inviting peoples religious views but only respecting the flag. Them doing this at a meeting just as
in schools makes me think of how prayer is accepted during this time but as individuals. That is
During the meeting, there was a time allowed for public comment. We learned in class
that parents are able to have a say in the education in this meeting they give up 20 minutes of
time to address issues to the Board. However, the board is unable to take action on anything
In the meeting, the inclement weather that had occurred previously in which students
went to school that Thursday but did not attend that Friday. Robert Coles stated, “potential for
ice on the road” was the reason that a day of the year was wasted when the board should have
just made starting times later rather than cancel a whole day on that Friday. Parents were very
concerned about the “slippery roads” and therefore the board gave them a day off. This may
relate to the course by the number of days given in the school year in CCSD.
Another item brought up in this meeting was the Chinese exchange program. Robert Cole
had concerns in regard to this program. His concern was the curriculum and how it may be

censored if the Chinese exchange program was put into play. I thought this related to the content
Another person who spoke was Autumn Tampa who talked about the salary of support
staff. In which she stated that “one-third of her yearly salary” would go to her health insurance
Another concern to her was the process of hiring and firing teachers. Sometimes teachers
cannot be held accountable for students lack of motivation but in the cases, she stated teachers
were being bullied by principal's and they sat and cried. This relates the defamation section of
the course due to the principal's making teachers feel less even though it may not be their fault.
There will always be students at some time bound to not be as motivated as others. Teachers that
are doing excellent jobs in the classroom with Gray evaluation should be rewarded and
compensated for.
A lot of teachers were actively involved in the public comment section of this school
board meeting. Another person said they were concerned to know where there is support such as
in programs like zoom, gear-up and more that benefit students and what is with the current pay-
cuts where the money is going? This relates to the content of the course under the teachers’ pay
because teachers are being cut and some programs are running out of money to benefit students.
In conclusion, this meeting was found to be very comprehensive on many issues. There
were a lot of situations that are relatable in regard to our course content, with continued
attendance and support of our community, these regular school board meetings will bring the
involvement of parents, teachers, and citizens. I hope to see that many of the concerns stated are
