From the beginning of our lives, the moment we were born, we have begun to communicate
with others, and it will be part of our lives until the end of time. That is why communication is
very important in our lives. Communication is the tool for us to express our feeling, give our
information and share our knowledge, thus communication that is used effectively ‘can help
us solve problems in our professional live and improve relationships in our personal life’
(Pearson et al., 2009; 5). According to Pearson et al. (2009; 10), communication is ‘the
process of using messages to generate meaning’. In must be understood that
communication does not occur automatically, instead, it has to be through a process in order
for us to understand each other. Besides communication process, the other point about
communication is the communication models; those are linear model, interactive model and
transactional model. In this paper, some examples and the explanations will be shown
regarding unsuccessfulness of communication among human in the context of interpersonal
communication.

Firstly, an example of transactional model will be explained so that we could know more
detail about this model. Before that, transactional model is known as a communication
between one people to many people. According to the IBM’s website (2010), transactional
model ‘describe the way in which you can use transaction in message flows to accomplish
certain tasks and results’. For example, in a classroom, a lecturer are preparing to teach
Biology’s subject, however, before doing so, he asked one of the students if he had
completed his assignment. Unfortunately, the student did not do the assignment he was
asked to do. Because of that, the lecturer are disturbed and started to become angry.
When he started his lesson, he seems to be unable to think clearly and the information given
is fuzzy because he keeps thinking about his anger. Meanwhile, for the students, they keep
asking the lecturer to repeat his lecture.

In this example, it is known that the lecturer and the students are in the environment, which
is the ‘fields of experience that help them understand others’ behaviour’ (Adler and Rodman.
2006; 12), that is the educational behaviour. In the process, the communication happens
through sound waves and light waves and the lecturer are sending the information which is
the decoding, and the students are absorbing the idea given by the lecturers and they give
feedback to the lecturers because they could not understand what the lecturer is teaching
them. The reason of the students who could not understand the lecture is because there are
noises where the lecturer could not control his anger, thus make the lecture unclear for the
students. In terms of fairness, it is not fair for the lecture to scold the whole students when
he was only angry with one student. In addition, the lecturer may not be able to complete his
lecture because of the noise. It is possible to say that the communication in this

transactional model’s example is not succeeding because the students could not decode
what the lecturer tries to encode.
