PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM 3
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
The unit of work, Church 4.1, enables students to start developing an understanding of how the Catholic Church works. In the human topic phase, students begin by exploring
this idea that people learn in communities. They wonder at the ways we can learn, who helps us to learn and how learning helps people. Through the use of children’s
literature and a number of collaborative learning strategies, they discuss people in our community who help us to learn everyday. They also explore times in their own lives
when someone has helped them to learn and why this was so important to them. Students then move on to what we can learn from Jesus. They discover that Jesus used
parables to teach us to live as God wants and they are exposed to different parable stories. Through this exposure they are able to discuss the stories with their peers, reflect
on the key messages and retell the parables in their own words. Enabling them to gain a thorough understanding of the importance of parables in the Catholic Faith and
what we can still learn from them today. The next part of the unit allows students to learn about the Apostles and the graces which we receive through the Sacraments. They
see that the Apostles were needed to hand on the teachings of Jesus and that through these graces, we are able to become models of these teachings ourselves and take
on the role of the Apostles in our modern world. In the Church topic phase, students learn that in order to remember these key teachings, we have important documents such
as The Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Lord’s Prayer. They also discover that the Church refers to the entire Catholic community and they explore ways that the
Church models how to live as God wants us to (e.g. What does the Priest do? What does the local Parish do? What does the school do?) At the conclusion of this unit of work,
students will understand what it means to be a part of a community, in particularly the Catholic community which we call the Church. They will see that we are always
learning from those around us, and that it is our duty as Catholics to continue modelling how to live as God wants, and that Jesus has many ways of guiding us in the right
direction always.

Thinking Understanding
Catholics believe that God sent his son Jesus, a person both fully human and fully divine, to communicate and reveal everything that God wants us to know about leading
good and happy lives. Catholics believe that in order to remember these revelations we must follow key teachings found in the Catechism, the Creeds, prayers (e.g. The
Lord’s Prayer) and the Commandments.
They also believe that we are all made in the image and likeness of God, therefore we must act as God wants us to and follow in the footsteps of Jesus in everything that we
do. We must think about our actions and make choices that God would make.

PLANNED ASSESSMENT
Learning Points:
• To assess understandings of how Jesus used parables to teach about living good lives.
Task:
Prior to this lesson, students have explored what a parable is. They have been exposed to two parable stories (Parable of the Sower AND Parable of the Good
Samaritan) and they have discussed both in detail, identifying the key messages and teachings of Jesus that are present within each. They should have an
understanding of how each parable teaches people to live as God wants us to. In this lesson, students are tasked with selecting one of the parables that they
have studied in class, and they are asked to retell the parable in their own words, using a comic strip / storyboard format. They must select what they believe to
be the most important messages and showcase these through illustrations and key words. Once their comic strip / storyboard is complete, they are to write a
reflection page that responds to the following questions:
• What is a parable?
• Why did Jesus use them?
• How does your chosen parable teach people to live good lives and to live as God wants?
This reflection page will then be attached to their completed comic strip / storyboard.
This activity will be assessed by collecting the comic strips / storyboards as a work sample. These work samples will then be used to mark students against each
of the lesson objectives. To record this, a rubric will be used. The rubric will grade as excellent (A), high (B), satisfactory (C), limited (D) or very limited (E).
Please see an example of the rubric below. There is space for the teacher to highlight and allocate a grade, as well as an opportunity to write any additional
comments about the student.
Assessment:
Lesson Objectives:

PLANNED RITUAL
Theme: Belonging
Through this mass, we focus on the need to belong and the gift of belonging to God’s family which we know as the Church.
Gather Welcome
We gather here today to celebrate a special gift – the gift of belonging to God’s family. When we belong we feel that we are a part of
something. We feel happy, safe and secure. This is the way that we feel in God’s family. We are grateful to be a part of a community where
we are supported, loved and are always learning to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. Today we reflect on this goodness of God and show thanks for
being a part of his Church.
Introductory Rites
The Greeting
Penitential Rite:
Lord Jesus, you reach out to care for us and save us.
Christ, have mercy.
Opening Prayer:
Let us pray.
Lord God, you have called us into your family. Strengthen us by your Spirit to live always according to your will. We ask this through Christ our
Lord.
Reading/s:
First Reading (1 Peter 2:9-10 – We are God’s chosen people)
But you are the chosen race, the King’s priests, the holy nation, God’s own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who
called you out of darkness into his own marvellous light. At one time you were not God’s people, but now you are his people; at one time you
did not know God’s mercy, but now you have received his mercy.
Responsorial Psalm:
His angel guards those who have reverence for the Lord
And rescues them from danger. R.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
“Let the little children come to me: the Kingdom belongs to them.”
Alleluia!
Gospel:
Some people brought children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples scolded the people. When Jesus noticed this he
was angry and said to his disciples, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to such as
these. I assure you that whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then he took the children in his arms,
placed his hands on each of them, and blessed them.
Homily:
• Comment on the instinctive concerns of children to belong. For example, they can be keen to bring home a stray dog or cat; they
also like to invite other children to their home.
• Importance of our family as a centre of belonging.
• We also belong to God’s family. Comment on the Gospel gesture of Jesus: putting his arms around the children.
We are gathered as God’s family. Let us now pray to our heavenly Father.
1. We pray for Pope Francis, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and all others who lead and serve in this Church. May they know your
guidance and direction as they continue working towards a better world, through the teachings of Jesus. (Pause) Lord hear us.
2. We pray for our world leaders. May they be inspired and supported to carry love with them always. (Pause) Lord hear us.
3. We pray for those who are sick, especially in our school community. May they feel your warmth and be brought to good health.
(Pause) Lord hear us.
4. We pray for those who are lonely: may we welcome them as friends with open arms and may they find peace and freedom. (Pause)
Lord hear us.
5. We pray for teachers, staff, parents and families of our school. May they always see God’s goodness, offering love, care and support
to everyone that they meet. (Pause) Lord hear us.
6. We pray for ourselves. May we never forget that we belong to God’s family. (Pause) Lord hear us.
Offertory:
Lord, you welcome us to your table. May we who celebrate the Eucharist be worthy members of your family. We ask this in the name of Jesus
the Lord.
Amen [Sung]
Lord’s Prayer:
Sign of Peace
Lamb of God
Communion
Let us pray.
Lord, through our participation in this Eucharist you make us one family in Christ. Help us grow in love for one another. Through Christ our Lord.
Father, hear our prayers and help us to welcome others as you welcome us. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
