Introduction

Nowadays more and more people are starting to use Internet, at the same time, Online

Gamers have become extremely popular especially to the students as their stress reliever.

According to the recent researches, online gaming has become one of the most addictive

Internet activities to date (Wan and Chou, 2006) Based on stablish researches, this thesis is

interested in learning the effect in their physical health brought by playing Online Games.

According to sweden's official gaming website (2009) the market for computer and

video games has grown and continues to grow at an accelerating pace. Computer game game

has become a very popular leisure activity among children and adolescents in recent years. In

fact based on the popularity alone online gaming garner s a larger share of " favorite" votes

among young people than any physical activities. Many benefits of the Internet as it not only

acts as entertainment tool, but also an important professional resources for work,

communication as well as education. However despite all of its inherent advantage, the Internet

also has many drawbacks like being addicted, physically weak, bad eyesight result in playing and

more.

According to Awais Ahmed (2017) being in the same position for a long period of time,

may brought pains in the body parts such as the wrist, shoulder and back. In addition The

thumbs are also always in the screen, keypad or keyboard for a long period

Page 5
of time, and this may result in bruise and blisters to these area. There is also a related syndrome

called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. According to Beverly Jenkins (2012), carpal tunnel syndrome is

caused when the main nerves between the forearm and hand is repeatedly squeezed or press.

Computers has long been linked to the Carpan tunnel syndrome, is also the view of Craton J.

(2009)

There are also vision problem cause by playing online games. According to Awais

Ahmed (2017), gamers always have their eyes focus in front of the screen for a prolong period of

time, staring at them for a very long period of time causes pain in the parts of the eye such as

the cornea, pupil and the iris. This may result in the complications to the eyesight such as long

sight and short sight. According to Beverely Jenkins (2012), this is also linked to having a

glaucoma especially the users who are near sighted.

A migraine headache can cause intense pain/throbbing or pulsing in one area of the

head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and

sound, according to Beverly Jenkins (2012). There is a report that online games may have

significantly negative, consequences, especially in the lines of students, through causing

distraction and interfering with the important part of the students life, according to Syracuse

University on the Science Daily Website (2007).

The research made use of Close ended survey design to determine the relationship

between the Online Gaming and Physical Health of the Students in Senior High School of Elias B.

Lopez Memorial National High School. The senior high school is composed of 48 Grade 12 and

60 Grade 11 Students. Each student answered 15 question (excluding those who did not

108 Survey questionaire and only 80 are used. From 108 students only 80 Students respond to

the study the researcher conducted.

Results and Discussion

Gamers Non-Gamers Total

Number of students 38 42 80

Percentage (%) 47.5% 52.5% 100%

Table 1. Percentage of Gamers and Non-Gamers Of 80 Students in Senior High School.

In accordance to the survey that the researcher conducted in the students of senior high

school in Elias B. Lopez Memorial National High School. The data in table 1 represents the

number and percentage of the students who plays Online Game ang the Non-Player. The table

above shows that the majority of the students does not play

Page 7
Online Games, still 47.5% or equal to 38 students played Online Game/s and 52.5% or equal to

42 Students who are Non-Ganers totalling to 80 students.

Table 2. Gamers : 38 Students (100%)

Suffers in Dry eye Lack of Sleep Headache (After using

Cp/Pc)
Number of Gamers 38 17 35
Percentage 100% 44.74% 92%

The data in table 2 shows that the Gamers suffers from dry eye, due to the usage of

Cellphone (CP) and Computer (PC) in playing Online Games. They are affected by the radiation

Coming from CP/PC resulting in having fatigue in the eye and/or Headache. Majority of them

specially dry eye, all of them suffers and almost 100% or 92% to be specific. Only 44.74% or to

be precise 17 Gamers who suffers from lack of sleep and this indicate that many still considered

sleeping properly.

Table 3. Non-Gamers : 42 Students (100%)

Suffers in Dry Eye Lack of Sleep Headache (After using

CP/PC
Number of Non- 16 7 40
Gamers
Percentage (%) 38.1% 16.67% 95.24%

The data in table 3 shows that Non-Gamers also suffers from dry eye, though

Page 8
only 16 out of 42 students.it is much less than the Gamers, also the Non-Gamers have adequate

sleep in majority of them to be precise 35 students. Though they don't play Online Games, they

still suffers in Headache sometimes after using a Cellphone or Computer, Due to other reasons

besides Online Gaming.

Conclusion

The researcher concluded in the research that almost half of the Students are Gamers

and the other half Non-Gamers, specifically 38 Gamers and 42 Non-Gamers. The researcher

found out that the Gamers all suffers in dry eyes and only 16 out of 42 Non-Gamers from it. This

prove that the level of their Online Gaming is above normal to experience suffering in dry eyes.

The researcher also concluded that although Gamers spent a lot of time Gaming to

experience fatigue in the eye, and the Non-Gamers don't. The rate of headache occuring are

almost the same , the Gamers 92% and the Non-Gamers 95%. This prove that the level of

Physical health related to Gaming is poor.

So the difference between Gamers and Non-Gamers is that the Gamers is more prone

to Eye fatigue than the latter and the relationship between Online Gaming and the Students

Physical Health is that Online Ging affects the students physical health In a bad way.

Page 9
Recommendation

The researcher recommend that the Gamers rest their eyes for 15 minutes after playing

Online Games for 1 hour, before playing again and they should limit their self to playing only 1-4

hours a day to avoid Eye fatigue. Sleep early to let the eye and mind rest and do some light

exercise like walking and/or doing household chores.
