Question 1

During my first field experience, I found myself developed significantly in competencies 1,2 and
6. For the first competency: act as a professional inheritor, critic and interpreter of knowledge
or culture when teaching students. Through observation of my cooperating teachers' lesson, I
found that students would understand better if the teacher explain step by step and constantly
checking whether they are followed up. I also had opportunities to apply what I learnt from my
cooperating teacher as I had opportunities to help students with their classwork during self-
study class. I am nowhere near "professional inheritor" at this stage, I improved my
communication skills with the students and moved closer to become an interpreter of the
knowledge.

I also found myself improved in competency 2. As I am a second English-speaker, I always found

it hard to express myself clearly sometimes. However, during the 1st field experience, I had a
bunch of opportunities to talk with or listen to my colleagues, my peers and my students in
English which, significantly improved my speaking and listening skills. Also, through observation
in class, I found that the professional vocabulary used needs to be accurate and clear. For
example, there is a huge difference between asking the students to “sketch the diagram” and
“plotting the diagram”.

I also had chances to circling round the class while the students were doing either individual
and group work. I learnt from my cooperating teacher that, while the students were doing
individual work, it is important to circling around and constantly checking whether they are
doing their work. During my first week in English class, while the students were doing their
group work, I circled around and constantly join in each of their conversation such as asking
them “what logo you have designed for your project”. Moreover, during the math self-study
class, I circled around and checking whether the students have any difficulties and always be
ready to help them when they have questions. I found the participation and supervision of
teacher during the self-study actually motivated the students to keep on working.

Question 2
I would like to improve the following competencies during the following field experience
7,3,8, 10
All the twelve competencies are essential for becoming an excellent teacher, and I am
aware that I always need to work on all of them. However, for my 2nd field experience, I would
like to focus on competencies 3, 8, 7 and 10. In the following paragraph, I would like to explain
why I picked those 4 competencies specifically.
First of all, for our 2nd field experience, we are able to both observe and giving lessons.
The reason I picked number 10 is that, during 2nd field experience, student teachers will work in
pairs with their cooperating teachers to plan 2 lessons. Thus, I would like to improve my
efficiency in group-work and cooperating skills to make excellent lessons plans for the students.
Technology is one of the most important in the classroom nowadays. During my first
experience, I found out that most teachers used projectors and smart whiteboards for the
lesson. The technologies in classroom significantly improved the lesson quality. For example,
the teacher could directly write (using a smart pen) on the electronic documents. However, I
never had opportunities to learn how to use either of those two. Thus I need to develop the
skills to integrate technology into the classroom.
The reason I picked competency 3 and 7 because I want to be a caring and trust-worthy
teacher. Thus I would like a develop a student-central teaching concept, where the teachers
develop teaching situation which are the best for the students.

I will make use of the following strategies for improvement:

To develop my group cooperating and communication skills, I am going to adapt the following strategies.

- Learning how to make a clear lesson plan

The basis for cooperation in making an excellent lesson plan is firstly being familiar with how to
make a lesson plan. For the next year (2019 fall, 2020 winter) I am going to take education
methodology courses in McGill, which contains the professional lesson plan format. In those
courses, I would have opportunities to make lesson plans and my lesson plans will be evaluated.
Moreover, those courses will provide opportunities for student teachers to work in groups.

- Taking a group dance class during this summer

I love dancing, and I want to take it as an opportunity to learn. During the summer, I am going to
take a group dance class where dancers need to cooperate with each other to group up the dance.
This highly requires the collaboration skills which will also help me with that.

To learn how to integrate technology into the classroom I will take the following strategies

- Learning how to use MircoSoft spreadsheet.

During my first field experience, I found that most teachers use the spread sheet for organization.
For instance, the use spread sheet to organize the grades of students from different classes and
different grades. Thus, I think it is important for me to learn this skill. As my father is a software
technician, I will learn from him during this summer.

- Learn how to use the projectors and smart white boards

During the summer, I am going to research online to find tutorials for these two technologies.

- Learn other technologies that might help with teaching and lesson plan

1. Clipboard
2. Audacity
3. PowerPoint animation
