Education has always been a big part of life in my family. My siblings and I were raised
to succeed in school, graduate, and attend college. As refugees, my parents were never given the
luxury of starting school at a young age, and it was difficult for them to adapt to school here in
the U.S. Therefore, ever since I was young I have strived to do well in school so I can get into
college. I have always taken school seriously, finished my work on time, and studied to pass my
classes. Not only has my family pushed me to want to attend college, but so has my AVID class.
I’ve taken AVID since my freshman year, and that class has really taught me the importance of
college. My teacher encouraged us to a four year university, by preparing us the best she can.
With all the college readiness skills I have learned, I hope to take them with me when I attend
Due to the environment I was raised in and the influences in my life, I have kept my
grades up all throughout high school. My transcripts reflect my hard work in all the classes I
have taken over the years. Getting A’s in all of my classes, and summer classes to get ahead, I
did get a few B’s. Taking Hmong for Hmong Speakers my first year was tough. I kept my
grades up the best I could, getting help from my parents and those around me. However, it was
difficult for me to determine the tone markers in the Hmong language which reflects my grade.
In addition, I got a B in AP Language and Composition. This was mostly due to the amount of
in class essays we took each week. I was not the best at these essays, however with the help of
my teacher, and continuous practice of writing essays; I was able to get my grade up to an A the
second semester. Lastly, I did receive a B in Leadership for one semester. It was my first time
being captain of the soccer team, and having a role in the youth board at church. I lacked on
turning in my assignments in Leadership and that caused me to get a lower grade. However, I
learned a lot about time management and how to juggle all the things I was doing at the time. I
got my grade up the second semester and kept it up. Soccer season was over half way through
the second semester so I was able to really focus on my studies. Moving on from my studies, my
Most of the times when I was absent was for a Leadership event. We would either be
setting up for a football game, and event, at an event, and more. Those days I am gone, I do
make sure to get the work that I missed. Usually I am aware of the activities we are doing in
class that I will miss and I make it up. Despite the days I have missed, my hard work and
dedication has overcome that. I was taught that attending and being present in class is very
important. I do not skip class because I feel like it, or because I do not want to go. As a student,
I know my priorities and the importance of attendance. Therefore, my transcripts and attendance
