The DVB-RCS Standard
• A short history
– Digital Video Broadcast over Satellite (DVB-S) established by ETSI (European
Telecommunication Standards Institute) DVB committee in 1993 for one way digital
satellite transmission
– DVB-RCS (Return Channel via Satellite) established by ETSI’s DVB committee via
specification EN 301 790 for interoperable VSAT networking in 2001: worlds first
two-way satellite standard!!!
• Several companies have announced recently that they supply DVB-RCS
equipment, including industry giants such as Alcatel, Gilat and Viasat.
• Since its inception by ETSI in 2001 and its fi rst implementation by SES, DVB-
RCS has been deployed in every region of the world.
• There are approximately 100 fully compliant DVB-RCS systems worldwide
and many more that are DVB-RCS like or claim to be upgradeable by
software to full DVB-RCS compliance.
• DVB-RCS equipment is now price competitive with legacy VSATs.
• The ETSI DVB committee continue to update the specifi cations

VSAT SCADA
Solution
• Maximize existing VSAT systems for SCADA applications

• Configure VSAT equipment with 256Kbps Return carriers

• At 256Kbps, the VSAT system will provide 99.9% availability

Solution
Example
• 3000 terminals, & 4 RCS carriers with 256kbps
• 3000/256 = 12 cycles required to poll the 3000 RTUs

• The VSAT terminal requires ~10 seconds to respond to RTU

• RTU response time is ~10 seconds

• The polling response time is 20 seconds per poll
• With 12 cycles of continuous polling, status of 3000
RTUs is updated within 4 minutes

Conclusions
In the words of Saudi Aramco
“VSAT technology is the cost effective solution & key factor
to Oil and Gas wideband & narrowband operations”

•SCADA is a very fast growing technology - Not only in Oil

and Gas upstream but also video, other energy sectors,
telecoms markets

•Existing wideband VSAT networks can be maximized to

support other low data applications like SCADA
