TYPES OF WINDOW OPENING

Window is an opening in a wall which is a transparent opening that allow the passage of lights. If the
window is not sealed or fixed, it also can allow sounds and air. Windows are usually glazed or covered in
some other transparent material and held in place by window frames, which prevent them from collapsing.
In Malaysia, there are several types of window opening that can be used subject to the different occasions,
weather, daylight, costs, location of room, size of room, direction of wind, utility of room and architectural
point of view. In our study case, the are few types of opening used for the windows of this showroom which
are fixed glass window, sliding glass window, top hung window and fixed louvres window.

This type of window can be found in the job control room. The dimension of the fixed window is 6mm
thickness and the size is 5300mm x 2100mm. The glasses are fixed to the window frame and onto the wall
as the name suggests. Aluminum is used as the material of the frame for the glass because it is durable and
requires less maintenance. As it is firmly fastened and cannot be opened, the function of this type of window
is limited only for the ample source of lights. With adequate amount of lights from the outside, it will
increase the visibility of the cars in the showroom. Since the purpose of windows of this showroom is to
provide the view of the cars from the outside of the building, tinted layer is not practically suitable to be
used because it will decrease the visibility from the outside of the building. Clear glass is used to bring a
vast amount of lights and maximize the view of the showroom.

Sliding glass window
This type of window is also used in the job control room. Sliding window is opened by sliding horizontally
past to the other panel. The frame used for this window is powder coated aluminum frame, holding the
6mm thick and 2650mm x 600m size of clear glasses. When the frame is pulled to open the window, the
nylon roller is sliding in aluminum channel. The aluminum channel need to be cleaned regularly to prevent
any problems in sliding the frame when we are opening the window. This type of window only opens up
50% of the space to give the reasonable control of ventilation. Tint layer is not applied on the glass because
clear glass will allow more passage of lights.

Top hung window
Top hung casement window is built utilizing an outer frame and a hinged sash. The hinge mechanism for
the opening of the window is to secure the top edge and allow to open out from the bottom. The hinge is
located at the upper frame, enabling the bottom sash to swing out. This type of window can be found in
many parts of the building such as director’s room, toilets, janitor, server room, utility room, surau and
mezzanine floor. These areas require less natural lights, so this small sized top hung window with the
thickness of 6mm is adequate to allow the passage of minimal light into the area. For director’s room, 12
sets of top hung window is used because this area need more lights due to his personal preference of
brightness aesthetic value. This window also uses the same type of frame as other windows which is powder
coated aluminum frame.
Fixed louvres window
Louvres window is a form of window which have a parallel arrangement of glass slips. This type of window
can be found in the TNB room of the showroom. As the name suggests, fixed louvres window cannot be
adjusted with hook or handle. The functions are limited only to provide ventilation and a little light seeping
through while keeping the excessive sunshine and moisture out. As the TNB room is filled with the
electrical applicants, fixed louvres window is the best option because a small amount of water or moisture
could bring damages to the electrical applicants. The frame used for this window is aluminum which has
been coated with powder to make sure the frame is free from corrosion.
