The tractor, a total loss,
was owned by long-time
district farmer, Clayton
Wareham.
This was not Ware-
ham’s first experience with
an unfortunate farm-re-
lated fire. A few year’s ago,
he lost a farm shed on his
home yard site just south
and west of this week’s
tractor fire and also previ-
ously lost a grain truck to
flames!
Fortunately, no one
was injured in Monday’s
blaze and thanks to hav-
ing more than one tractor
in use, Spring field work
was able to continue with a
smaller machinery fleet.
Earlier in the month,
on Saturday, May 4th,
the local firefighters re-
sponded to a hydro pole
fire south of town near
Moore Park. The local brig-
ade managed to extinguish
the fire without injury or
incident.

The Frontier Trading Company has been operating within the
community of Minnedosa since 1984, where their participants made leather items.
After multiple moves, the business is currently located at 151-9th Street SW.

It’s now official…
Although the announcement of Splish Splash Inflat-
able Water Park coming to Minnedosa has been out for
some time, there was still a lot of background work that
needed to be done to secure this new business for this
summer. As of Tuesday’s Town Council meeting, it ap-
pears all t’s have been crossed and the i’s dotted and it is
now official… Splish Splash has been approved to come
to Minnedosa Lake. Perhaps it was a little prematurely
announced? Fortunately, it sounds like everything has
come together in the end.
FireFighter Skatch?
Hats off to our Mayor, Pat Skatch, who took part in a
live fire training exercise earlier this week. Suited in full
firefighter’s gear, provided by our local fire department,
Mayor Skatch got a hands-on experience in a smoke-
filled training environment giving her a greater under-
standing and appreciation for what our local fire fighters
do in their job.

With the May long weekend comes Minnedosa’s
Town Wide Yard Sale event. As you will see elsewhere

New Government Needed to Solve Canola Crisis

A s many of you know by now, Canada and China are
in a serious diplomatic dispute that has led to 43,000
canola growers losing their largest export market. The ra-
tionale for blocking our canola is that there were alleged
pests in seed shipments they received. These phytosani-
tary arguments are completely bogus, as it is well known
Canada produces the highest quality canola in the world.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has retest-
ed the shipment samples multiple times since and have
found no evidence to support the claims of the Chinese
government.
While it seems quite likely that the arrest of Meng
Wanzhou, a top executive with Huawei, was the tipping
point, Canada’s relationship with China has been steadily
unravelling under this Liberal government. In late 2017,
Justin Trudeau travelled to China with the expressed in-
tent of opening free trade talks. The Chinese government
clearly did not appreciate his approach, and the Prime
Minister was sent home without even an agreement to
open discussions on free trade between Canada and
China. At that point, Chinese state media began to write
disparaging stories about Trudeau and Canada.
Chinese state media have also (perhaps rightly)
questioned judicial independence in Canada when it
came to light that the Prime Minister and his staff had
tried to intervene to stop the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin,
and instead offer them a deferred prosecution agree-
ment. Although I wish it were that simple, I do not be-
lieve that Canada has any legal measures to simply re-
lease Meng Wanzhou. Frankly, we have fallen into a trap
between the two largest economies in the world, and it is
hurting farmers in our region, and across the country.
That said, while Canada is in a tough situation, the
fact the Liberals have taken no action is simply not ac-
ceptable. Granted, last week they did make changes to
the Advanced Payment Program (APP) for farmers by
increasing the cap from $400,000 per year to $1 million.
For canola producers, the interest-free portion will be in-
creased to $500,000 from $100,000. Conservatives fully
support this, but question why it took almost two months
to make this simple change. It is also only a small band-
aid solution, that doesn’t address the larger problem of
regaining market access for our farmers.
There are also actions that our Conservative cau-
cus has called for that the government has not acted
on. Firstly, it was way back in January when the Liberals
had to fire their former cabinet minister turned Chinese
Ambassador, John McCallum, for making irresponsible
statements on the arrest of Meng Wanzhou. We have

now gone over three months without an Ambassador
to China, throughout an escalating diplomatic dispute.
I understand there might not be any ex-Liberal Minis-
ters available right now, but it is simply unacceptable for
Canada to go without an Ambassador this long.
Secondly, we live in a rules-based trade world, or at
least we should. This is a science-based process to com-
pare samples and determine the validity (or not) of the
Chinese claims of pest issues with out product. It has
been almost two months and Canada has still not sent
a delegation to China resolve these different scientific
findings. It is time for Canada to launch a challenge at the
World Trade Organization (WTO), and ensure we prop-
erly defend the quality of our agricultural exports. The
Canadian brand when it comes to agricultural products
is strong, and we cannot let it get dragged through the
mud any longer.
Most recently, we have seen warning signs that this
crisis with China may not stop at canola. There were two
Quebec based pork processing companies that recently
had their export certificates suspended over ‘administra-
tive issues’. This is deeply worrying. We simply cannot al-
low more agricultural export products to lose market ac-
cess.
Canola farmers that had any carryover from last year
have already lost at least a buck a bushel, meaning tens of
thousands of dollars for many operations. They are about
to start seeding canola while the price is down, and I can
only imagine the anxiety our canola producers are fac-
ing right now. This has serious effects not only on the
livelihoods of these farm families, but also their mental
health.
It isn’t just canola farmers though. Commodity
prices are low right now across the board. We are facing
what looks like could be a dry summer. Although we will
be hoping and praying for good growing conditions this
summer, we can’t control the weather.
The Liberal government has bungled our trade rela-
tionships previously with India, Saudi Arabia and Italy to
name a few, and now has managed to get into a dispute
with the second largest economy in the world. They got
us into this mess, and it’s their job to get us out of it. Sadly,
I don’t believe our current Prime Minister and his gov-
ernment are capable of doing so.
At the end of the day, there is simply no way the cur-
rent Liberal government can possibly repair our relation-
ship with China. The only way we can end this dispute
is to elect a new government. A new government led by
Prime Minister Andrew Scheer, who will reset our rela-
tionship with the world’s second largest economy, re-
build our trading relationships with nations around the
world, and regain export access for our farmers.

1889 – Clanwilliam farmers have become tired of rid-
ing behind oxen and some are buying buddies and dem-
ocrats.
1899 – A $100 reward is offered for information lead-
ing to the arrest of the person guilty of poisoning dogs in
Minnedosa.
1909 – A slight earthquake rocked the district last week.
1919 – Odanah Reeve, N.P. Shuttleworth, has called a
ratepayers meeting to fight for better roads.
1929 – A hospital day was held last Saturday with goods
valued at $105.95 being donated.
1949 – Town Council has approved the purchase of a
road maintainer.
1959 – Efforts are being made by Minnedosa mothers
to set up a Co-operative Kindergarten for preschool chil-
dren who are too young to attend elementary school and
too bored to find life enjoyment at home.
1969 – The Minnedosa RCMP detachment now has a
breathalizer apparatus. Two local constables recently
participated in a two-week course in Regina on how to
use the breathalizer equipment.
1979 – Saturday night shopping, during the summer

Dog Waste a Big Concern
During Town Wide Cleanup

day, May 13th over 35
people came out to par-
ticipate in the town wide
clean-up hosted by the
Minnedosa Communities
in Bloom committee.
Minnedosa UCT mem-
bers attended the event
and invited the Minnedosa
4-H group to help out. UCT
members later treated the
young volunteers to a wie-
ner roast at the beach once
the cleanup was over. What
a great way to get everyone
out and helping beautify
our lovely town!
Smash on the Highway
Local emergency responders attended a two-vehicle collision at the south
junction of Highways #10 and #16 near the Minnedosa Auto Wreckers on
Wednesday afternoon. Both vehicles were westbound on Highway #16 and
when they approached the intersection, the first vehicle was rear-ended by
the vehicle pictured above. The impact sent the first vehicle across the
highway where it came to rest in the field north of the intersection.
All parties were checked out on scene but had no serious injuries.

our War Veterans from Minnedosa and the surrounding areas from both
World Wars, Korean War and the Afghanistan War.
Banners that are 2 feet by 4 feet in size will be displayed on
street light poles along main street and other areas as needed, showing
details about the Veteran similar to the sample of our General Hugh Dyer
that is already on display next to the Minnedosa Legion Club Room. The
Veterans name, the Force participated in along with the War and the years
of enlistment will be displayed along with a common background. There
will be one Veteran shown on each side of the banner.
In conjunction with the Minnedosa Legions 80th anniversary
this year we anticipate to erect these banners starting the July 1st
weekend through to November 11th Remembrance Day. Future years
will have them displayed about 6 weeks prior to Remembrance Day. To
participate in the first run for July 1st the details have to be in by June 8th,
2019. Any details for banners after this date will be run at a later time.

Roberta was raised on
her family farm northeast
of Basswood. Her parents,
Bob and Gwen Manns,
operated this century old
farm from 1969 to 2002.
Following high school,
Roberta followed in her
father’s footsteps and at-
tended the University of
Manitoba where she com-
pleted a Diploma in Agri-
culture.
After graduation in
1983, Roberta secured a
job as a Credit Advisor
with Farm Credit Canada
and continued her career
in agricultural finance for
16 years with the Manitoba

program for farmers.
Roberta has been a
strong advocate for farm
safety contributing to the
formation of the Mani-
toba Farm Safety Program
and persuasive in securing
funding for the Grain Safe-
ty Trailer project spear-
headed by the Canadian
Agricultural Safety Associ-
ation. She is a supporter of
STARS Air Ambulance and
last year was one of the
celebrity participants to
take part in a STARS Res-
cue on the Island. During
this event, Roberta raised

Rotary Club serving in sev-

calving during the last week of April and
Minnedosa Lions Club are hosting
a Fill-A-Truck Event this Victoria Day
long weekend.
Diabetes Canada and Lions
formed a partnership with the Lions
Fill a Truck in April 2018. The purpose is
to collect a variety of gently used items
for the Canadian Diabetes Association,
who will in turn sell the items with pro-
ceeds supporting Diabetes Canada’s
prevention and education programs.
Last year, 31,696 pounds was gathered
for the nation-wide event.
The local event will run on the
same weekend as the Minnedosa town
wide garage sales, and the local Lions
are hopeful that people will be gra-
cious enough to donate any unsold
items from their garage sales to this
important cause.

Minnedosa Lions to host a Fill-A-Truck
event. “I would love to fill a huge truck
to donate to Diabetes Canada, but we
will take whatever we can get,” said

for everyone; people get to clean out
their basements and garages, items
don’t go to the landfill and the Diabe-
tes Foundation gets the donation.”
Currently, the Minnedosa Lions
Club has 28 active members, however

Victoria Day Long Weekend, Get on the Water Carefully

There are only four
during the summer so
each one is cherished by
Canadians but this one
coming up carries special
significance for boaters
and cottagers.
It’s the Victoria Day
long weekend, which is
considered by most as the
unofficial start of summer!
It’s the weekend where
the “Honey Do” List takes
a back seat to opening up
the cottage, launching the
boat and hauling out the
water toys.
Historically, though,
this weekend has also
been one that generates
more than its fair share of
boating-related incidents
and fatalities. It’s for this
reason that May 18th to
24th is Safe Boating Aware-
ness Week managed by
the Canadian Safe Boating
Council (CSBC). The goal
is to remind those who ply
our Canadian waterways
to boat safely and respon-
sibly, now at the beginning
factors that together con-
stitute a dangerous mix
when on the water at any
time, but especially during
long weekends; when the
sheer number of boats on
the lake which often out-
number those of a normal
weekend by a factor of 10!
Even on relatively calm
days, the converging waves
generated by the increased
traffic from sport boats
to large cruisers can eas-
ily capsize smaller fishing
boats, canoes and kayaks.
While air tempera-
tures over the Victoria Day
long weekend can often
be quite balmy, boaters
need to remember that the
temperature of the water
has only risen a handful
of degrees since the ice re-
ceded. The cold shock can
be deadly should someone
fall overboard or their boat
capsizes and sinks. A good
idea to guard against this
possibility is to either wear
or pack thermal protective
clothing to slow the onset
of hypothermia until help
arrives. This, of course, is
in addition to wearing a
PFD which will also pro-
vide some thermal protec-
tion. Having the means to
call for help, should it be
required, either by marine
radio or cell phone (ser-
vice dependent) is a must.
Make sure to have suf-
ficient personal floatation
devices (PFDs) on board
for everyone. Check them
for proper fit as well as for
broken zippers or buckles,
split seams or excessive
wear. Should any of these
be apparent, the PFD must
be replaced.
However the greatest

In fact, alcohol accounts
for approximately 40% of
all boating-related inci-

sage that boaters need to
heed. Alcohol, recreation-
al drugs or prescriptions

an enjoyable and safe start
to your summer. By be-
having responsibly on the
water, ensuring you have
the proper safety equip-
ment aboard and limiting
your alcohol consumption
to after you arrive back at
the dock, you can truly en-
joy this upcoming holiday
weekend.

Legion Branch #138 wishes to announce that the Royal
Canadian Legion Athletic Camps will again be held at the
International Peace Gardens from July 14th to August 10th,
2019. Sporting activities that will take place in this time
period are volleyball, basketball, advanced track, track and
field, soccer, gymnastics, multi sport and judo. Each camp is
of a one week duration and is open to all youth.
The cost for attending these camps is $560/week. which

Legion branch and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, making the

and food stored for long
periods of time. Often re-
ducing available water
and lowering the home’s
relative humidity with
dehumidifiers and fans

areas. Once the cause is
remedied, there are many
products on the market
from baits to sprays that
will get rid of silverfish,
aerosols such as: Raid and
Air Devil for hard to reach
places. As with all insecti-
cides, read the directions
and warnings very care-
fully.
A simple silverfish
trap can be made by tak-
ing canning jars, scrub-
bing them clean and then
covering the outside with
masking tape to make
them easy to climb. These
traps are then placed in
areas of infestation. The
bugs will climb up and fall
into the jars and then will
not be able to climb the
walls to escape. Moist cot-
ton or starchy foods work
as bait. Also, leave cloves
