John Tyler Community College

Associate Degree Nursing Program

Orientation Instruction Sheet

Castlebranch (separate attachment)

Castlebranch.com is an online site that you will use to enter your medical information and to receive your
background check and drug screen. You will need to complete the medical document manager, and the
background check and drug screen prior to the start of the semester. There is an email attachment with
directions on how to complete this process.

E-resources, Skills Bag, Testing Package, Shadow Health (separate attachment)

 The Nursing Program uses E-resources. All books are purchased at the beginning of the program and are
electronic except for one workbook. The bookstore will notify the faculty when these items are available
for purchase and you will be notified by the faculty.
 The Skills Bag includes all the items you will use in the skills lab in NSG 106. The skills lab is where you will
practice skills such as medication administration, dressing changes, and Foley catheter insertion. Put your
name on your skills bag.
 Each semester you will purchase a HESI Package. This is a purchase separate from your book bundle. The
first semester package includes case studies, study materials and practice tests. Students are required to
purchase a HESI package each semester.

Health Requirements (separate attachment)

All the health requirement documentation is submitted to the medical document manager at Castlebranch. Once
you submit your documents, they are evaluated for meeting the criteria as established by the Nursing Program.
Please check back into your Castlebranch account regularly. All the criteria must be met by August 12 for you to
sit in class on the first day. Retain all documents in case you are required to resubmit them.
The health requirements include:
 Physical examination: This must be within six months of starting classes.
 Immunizations: Mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, varicella. Titers may be used to prove
immunity. Caution *** this is often the most difficult item for students to complete. Begin early!
 Hepatitis B: This is a series of three vaccinations. You must sign a declination form if you do not wish to
have the series. You must sign a declination form if you are in the process of receiving the three
vaccinations, but are not complete yet.
 Tuberculosis screening: This is a two-step process. Please see the attached explanation. If you have
previously tested positive on a PPD, you will not need a current PPD, you will need to provide evidence of
a clear chest x-ray and submit the Health Screening Questionnaire. The Quantiferon gold or the T-spot
blood tests are alternatives for the two-step PPD.
 Seasonal influenza vaccine: Faculty strongly recommend you receive the seasonal influenza vaccine. You
must sign a declination form if you do not wish to receive the vaccine or are unable to receive the vaccine.
You will be required to follow hospital policy when in clinical if you choose not to be vaccinated. This
usually means you will be required to wear a mask when near patients.
 CPR: The only approved card for CPR is the American Heart Association, Healthcare Provider CPR. There
are many sites available in the Richmond area, use your search engine to locate one convenient for you.

4/2019
You may take the classroom portion online, but must have actual practice on a manikin. Sign your card
before you submit both front and back to Certified Background.

Parking at the NEC (separate attachment)

All nursing student vehicles must have a JTCC parking decal available at the cashier. Student spaces at the NEC
are labeled “JTCC Parking.” If those parking spaces are full, additional parking is located behind the medical
offices at Johnston Willis Hospital. Do not park in spaces that are not labeled as they are for patients in the
medical practice on the second floor of the NEC.
