Academic Writing

Assessment Scheme
This is the assessment scheme of Academic Writing. It includes:

 Assessment Criteria (categories considered in the process of assessing a candidate’s performance throughout the course)
 Weight (the relevant percentage of assessment)
 Description (a short description of each of the assessment criteria)

Assessment Criteria Weight Description

Ongoing from session 1 to session 10


Attendance 10% All candidates are expected to attend all of the ten sessions. Attending one session
corresponds to one mark.
Ongoing from session 1 to session 10 – assessed by course instructor and
approved by Language Unit Supervisor
20% All candidates are expected to participate in most of the in-class writing exercises
In-class Practice and input sessions. Participation in class activities corresponds to 20% of the total
score regardless of how well each candidate does on an individual exercise. The
percentage is awarded by the class instructor regarding the general performance of
each learner in class activities.

Ongoing from session 1 to session 10 – assessed by course instructor
Participants are expected to present four Academic essays as follows:
Assignments 40%  Literature Review (First Attempt) corresponding to 10%
 Literature Review (Second Attempt) corresponding to 10%
 Argumentative Essay (First Attempt) corresponding to 10%
 Argumentative Essay (Second Attempt) corresponding to 10%
Conducted once as per schedule
All participants are expected to sit a final exam that has two sections.
 Language Section: 10%
Final Exam 30%  Writing Section: 20%

The final exam is a standardized exam that is generated by the Language Unit
and marked by class instructors. It covers the concepts and strategies
delivered over the period of the course.

*The passing score is 60 out 100.
