1. Generalities

The highly-flexible VULKAN-RATO-S coupling is a rubber coupling, flexible in all directions.


Its essential parts are the flexible part, the membrane part and the connecting parts.
All connecting elements of the coupling are arranged without clearance, so no wear will oc-
cur during operation. For this reason the RATO-S coupling is free of maintenance.
The coupling must be protected against permanent influence of oil and against the radiation
of heat. Oil mist and oil splashes are not detrimental.
The flexible part is fit for use at ambient temperatures comprised between -50° (C) to +80°
(C). The segmental construction form of the flexible part guarantees good heat dissipation
properties. The free-of-play torque transmission in the coupling and the large sectional rub-
ber area of the flexible element provide good noise attenuation.
Basically, the connection surfaces and the fitted as well as the finish bores of the coupling
are protected by Tectyl. Prior to installation, these surfaces must be cleaned by conventional
solvants. When the cleaned surfaces are completely dry, they must be greased lightly.

On behalf of the classification societies we herewith give the following instruction:


The torsional vibration behaviour of the driving system has been checked and approved by
the classification society. The expected and satisfactory behaviour is guaranteed only, provi-
ded that all components comply to the values, the torsional vibration calculation is based
upon. With respect to the coupling, this means to exactly keep to the dynamic stiffness and
damping.
In case of a replacement of the elements, only original VULKAN elements with coordinated
technical data approved by the classification societies must be used!
To guarantee faultless function and optimum usage of the highly-flexible RATO-S coupling,
certain installation instructions have to be observed. Basically, each bolt connection partici-
pating in the transmission of the torque must be tightenend by means of a torque spanner.
The individual tightening torques are given on the general drawing of the RATO-S coupling
and on the drawing of the flexible part.

In case of a flexible mounted system, please agree the alignment with the manufacturer of
engine, coupling and gearbox.

2. Installation of the coupling

As the coupling is supplied in the partially assembled condition, extensive disassembly work
will not be necessary in order to carry out the installation.
Only the connection elements for connecting the individual flexible segment-rows must be
removed.

First the hub (5) with the connecting parts must be mounted on the shaft butt end of the
driven machine using a method meeting the requirements of modern engineering practice.
Both machines must be positioned to the installation dimension of the coupling and must be
aligned to the instructions given in sheet E 10341.
Possible thermal expansions specific to the system involved must be taken into account.
In order to guarantee an optimal life expectancy for the bearing bush (9) it is necessary to fit
in the bearing bush (9) and then to grease the inner and outer circumference.
Only grease without a solid matter supplement is to be used.
Now the membrane support is pushed over the bearing bush (9).
Then you can start to install the flexible part (1).

2.1 Design of the flexible part

Prior to describing the assembly, we would explain you the design of the flexible part (1).
The flexible part consists of three flexible segment-rows.
Each flexible segment-row again is divided into four flexible segments.
The position of the flexible segments and segment-rows towards each other has been
marked.
More detailed information on the marking is given in the enclosed sheet E 10623.

2.2 Installation of the flexible part

For assembly, each RATO-segment should be put into a lifting device using suitable aids.
First the RATO-segments of the first row (drawing no. (2) EG...) should be installed one after
the other and must be connected firmly with the flyhweel by means of the corresponding
fixation elements. The prescribed tightening torque for the corresponding screw quality must
be kept.
In case of using 10.9 bolts, please provide hardened washers.

During the tightening process please check whether the outer circumference of the
respective RATO-segment is in metallic contact with the centering of the flywheel!

Now the RATO-segments of the second row should be installed one after the other and
connected firmly with the RATO-segments of the first row by the corresponding fixation
elements. The prescribed tightening torque (3), given on drawing no. (2) EG..., must be kept.
Attention must be paid that the second row of the RATO-segments is displaced by 45° to the
first row, so that a closed-ring formation is obtained (figure 1).

Then the RATO-segments of the third row should be installed one after the other and
loosely connected with the RATO-segments of the second row as well as the membrane
lying in between by means of the respective fixation elements. The third row of the RATO-
segments must be displaced by 45° to the second row (figure 1).

In order to install the third RATO-segment row, the membrane dimension group (10) must
be deflected. In order to carry out the deflection, two ring bolts must be screwed into the
radial threaded bores in the clamping ring (4, drawing no. 2G...), one beside the other.

Then turn this side until these two ring bolts point upwards in a symmetrical position to the
axis of the RATO-S coupling.

After having connected an appropriate traction device to these ring bolts, the membrane
dimension group (10) can be deflected as far as to permit one segment to be placed in this
location (figure 2).

Then the alignment of both RATO segments-rows with the


membrane lying in between must be carried out. Reference
surface for the alignment is the outer diameter of the membrane.
The alignment can be made by use of a straight edge. After both
RATO segment-rows have been aligned, this connection must be
tightened firmly. The tightening torques (5, 7), given on the
drawing no. (2) EG..., must be kept. Now the RATO segments of
Figure 2 the third row must be firmly connected with the membrane
dimension group (10).
The tightening torque (27), given on the general drawing, must be kept.
After this has been done, the highly-flexible VULKAN RATO-S coupling is tightly connected
to the system.

3. Putting in operation and safety measures

After the installation has been carried out, the drive system is ready for operation, as far as the
coupling is concerned. We would like to point out that before the first operation you have to
make sure that all installation aid devices have been removed from the coupling.
The coupling must be shielded according to the safety regulations. These shields should be
made from perforated sheet or wire mesh, if it is not in contradiction with prevailing
requirements, in order to guarantee adequate ventilation of the coupling.

4. Maintenance

The highly-flexible VULKAN RATO- S coupling does not require maintenance.


We recommend, however, an annual alignment control and a check of the flexible part (1).

5. Replacement of the flexible part

VULKAN RATO-S couplings are not subject ot wear. Should, however, due to an inad-
missible load a damage occur to the flexible part installed, the individual segments can be
replaced without having to displace the driving or the driven machine.

We would like to explain replacement of the flexible part in detail as follows:

5.1 Disassembly of the flexible part

First remove the fixation elements (18, 27, 40).


Then take out the fixation elements arranged for the connection of the two flexible segment-
rows.

Now the first four segments can be disassembled using an appropriate lifting device. The
membrane dimension group (10) must be deflected as required (figure 2).
When removing the segments, care must be taken not to damage the centering of the
respective counterpieces.
After the fixation elements installed at the other side of the individual segment have been
removed, the next four segments can be disassembled one after the other.
Now the remaining segments can be removed one after the other.

Please note: If one segment is damaged, it is a basic requirement to replace all other
segments of the segment-row concerned, too.
When ordering spares for the flexible part (1) or one segment-row
respectively, the following information has to be given with respect to the
coupling:
1. order no.
2. drawing no.
3. partslist no.

5.2 Assembly of the flexible part

Before starting the assembly, it is recommended to check the alignment of the system.
The procedure for assembling the flexible part has already been described in paragraph 2.
After the assembly has been finished, the system is ready for operation, as far as the
coupling is concerned.
