    Hand washing is a simple and effective method for preventing hospital-acquired infections. The 6 step process involves: (1) wetting hands under running water; (2) applying soap and lathering for 20 seconds, paying attention to palms, back of hands, between fingers, and under fingernails; (3) rinsing thoroughly under running water; (4) drying hands completely with a sterile towel. Hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds before and after touching each baby. Jewelry should be removed and shirts rolled up before washing from wrist to elbow with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

    Golden rules
    l Remove all jewelry and watch before hand washing. Roll the shirt to above elbow level.
    l Wet and apply soap on hands and forearm up to elbow level.
    l A normal, non-medicated soap is good enough.
    l Dry hands either in air or by single-use sterile towel or sterile paper. Multiple-use cloth towels are not recommended
    l Alcohol-based hand rub solutions may be used as an alternative. The 5 ml solution should be spread on all parts of the hands; follow
    Above steps; rub hands to dry.
