WHY STUDY AT AcSIR?
The aim of AcSIR is the pursuit of
excellence in addition to doing some-
thing applicable. We promote the
culture of being singularly dynamic
and innovative. The Academy was
established by a Resolution of the
Parliament in 2010 and received rec-
ognition as an”Institution of National
Importance” by the Academy of Sci-
entific and Innovative Research (Ac-
SIR) Act 2011. The Academy intends
to maximize the number of quali-
fied professionals and researchers of
high-quality in the domain of science
and engineering; and also to equip
them with the skills to innovate and
conduct seamless interdisciplinary re-
search.
ABOUT PROGRAMS:
The programs equip students to un-
dertake interdisciplinary research by
providing a broad-based practical
training at the best in the class na-
tional laboratories of CSIR. The Pro-
grams are structured around academ-
ic coursework (according to program
requirement) and compulsory cours-
es viz. One Project Proposal & one
Review Article writing; and Societal
Program; and research in frontier ar-
eas of Science, Technology and Engi-
neering leading to a PhD degree.

he Wellcome Trust/DBT
India Alliance launch-

grammes to tackle India’s
health issues through collaborative
research and also by building clinical
research capacity.
The Wellcome Trust/DBT India Al-
liance (henceforth, India Alliance),
a public charity that funds health re-
search in India, announces the launch-
ing of new financing schemes that
aim to address major health issues for
India and the entire world. Three new
initiatives will fund collaborative re-
search projects, clinical research cen-
tres, and clinical research training, as
ways to promote innovation and ex-
cellence and improve India’s health
research ecosystem.
Together with the Department of
Biotechnology (DBT), Government
of India and Wellcome Trust, UK,
renewing this partnership for another
5 years, India Alliance has entered a
fresh phase of financing from April
2019. This enables India Alliance to
amplify its efforts beyond providing
individual fellowships at different ca-
reer stages to basic biomedical, clin-
ical, and public health researchers,
which it’s done for ten years. We now
bring three new initiatives: Team Sci-
ence Grants, Clinical/Public Health
Research Centres, and Clinical Re-
search Training Programme.
Team Science Grants (TSG)
Team Science Grants (TSG) will fi-
nance teams that bring together high
tech scientists from multiple insti-
tutions with complementary skills,
knowledge, and resources to tackle a
significant health challenge for India.
High-risk, high-reward suggestions
may also find funding under this pro-
gram.
Clinical/Public Health Research
Centres (CRC)
Clinical/Public Health Research
Centres (CRC) are envisioned as ‘re-
search-oriented centres’, which pref-
erably involve numerous institutions
that focus on significant biomedical
research problems and develop phy-
sician-scientists. The CRCs will be
virtual centres that may have either
crosscutting or vertical research top-
ics, together with the training of early
career physician-researcher as an es-
sential component. Beyond the fund-
ing period, the CRCs are expected
to evolve as sustainable centres that
strengthen India’s clinical and public
health research ecosystem.
Clinical Research Training Pro-
gramme (CRTP).
Physician-scientists link the clinic to
research, for which the CRCs could
have an embedded Clinical Research
Training Programme (CRTP). These
can finance 3-year mentored research
training fellowships for medical
graduates (MBBS) and post-grad-
uates (MD/MS). These fellowships
are intended to incorporate basic and
clinical/public health research and
equip trainees with skills required for
a career in health research.

PhD Fellowships:
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds
awards PhD fellowships into out-
standing junior scientists who want
to pursue an ambitious PhD project
of about 3 years in basic biomedical
research within a global leading lab-
oratory. For additional details please
refer to “Who can apply ?“. The peer-
review-based selection procedure is
extremely competitive. Applicants
must consequently be exceptional in
all three selection criteria.
Purpose:
To promote basic research in bi-
omedicine by providing the best
young, up-and-coming scientists with
comprehensive support during their
PhD phase.
More than a monthly stipend:
The fellowship includes a compet-
itive monthly stipend that’s initially
granted for two years and that may be
extended for up to another 12 months.
Participation in international scientif-
ic conferences can be supported. Ad-
ditionally, fellowship holders have
been offered personal support, sem-
inars to discuss their projects, com-
municating training and alumni meet-
ings, and consequently can become a
part of a global network. Read below
personal support and conditions.
Conditions for PhD Fellowships:
Grantees can take up their Boehringer
Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) fellowship by
sending us their signed fellowship
conditions, desired start date, and de-
tails of their bank account. The fel-
lowship expires if not taken up within
6 months of the date of the letter of
approval.
Amount:
The basic monthly stipend amounts
to 1,550 euros. In most countries, fel-
lows are paid an additional flat rate of
150 euros per month to cover minor
research-related costs (books, travel
expenses, etc.). To adjust e.g. for dif-
ferences in living costs, country-re-
lated premiums of up to 1,700 euros
may be added (in the United King-
dom currently 700 euros, in the USA
and Denmark 800 euros, in Austral-
ia, Israel, and Canada 500 euros, in
Switzerland 1,700 euros, and in Aus-
tria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy,
the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden
200 euros). Depending on the cost of
living, all other countries are grouped
into one of these categories. For ex-
ample, an unmarried fellow working
in Germany currently receives 1,900
euros, in the USA 2,500 euros, in the
United Kingdom 2,400 euros, and in
Switzerland 3,400 euros.
Furthermore, a spouse allowance of
200 euros, a child allowance of 200
euros per child and/or childcare al-
lowance of up to 500 euros may be
added depending on the personal sit-
uation.
The initially awarded stipend sum is
based on the information provided in
the application. The fellowship hold-
er is obligated to inform BIF about
any changes in his/her personal or
financial circumstances (change of
marital status, income of spouse, etc.)
so that BIF can adjust the amount of
the stipend. The stipend is transferred
in euros by the middle of each month.
In addition, fellowship holders can
apply for travel allowances to present
their research projects at international
scientific conferences, to participate
in methods courses, or to perform
research in cooperating laboratories.
Besides, BIF offers its fellows and
alumni exclusive meetings, seminars,
and trainings.
Duration:
PhD fellowships are granted for 24
months and can be extended once for
a maximum of 12 months. However,
if the fellow began work on his/her
PhD before taking up the fellowship,
that period will be deducted from the
maximum extension period. The be-
ginning of the PhD work is consid-
ered by BIF to be the date of the final
examination on the official certificate
(e.g. BSc, MSc, Diploma, DEA, Li-
cenciatura, Laurea) if the fellow con-
tinued to work in the same research
group, or the date of arrival at the
PhD laboratory if the fellow changed
research groups.
In the event of illness, BIF usually
continues payments for 2 months,
after which time assistance would
cease. Upon recovery, the fellowship
may be extended by the period of ab-
sence due to illness.
Who Can Apply?
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds
(BIF) awards PhD fellowships to Eu-
ropean citizens working in Europe
or overseas, and to non-European
citizens pursuing their PhD project
in Europe. At the respective dead-
line (1 February, 1 June, 1 October)
the university entrance qualification
(secondary school leaving certifi-
cate/A-levels/university entrance test
that permits to pursue first university
studies after finishing school) must
not have been achieved more than 8
years ago.
The PhD project must be experi-
mental, in the field of basic biomedi-
cal research and aimed at elucidating
basic biological phenomena of hu-
man life and acquiring new scientific
knowledge. For a survey on the range
of topics, please refer to the results of
finished projects in FUTURA, the in-
ternational journal of the foundation.
Natural scientists should have been
awarded their ultimate university de-
gree (diploma, MSc, BSc, or equiv-
alent). Students who have not yet
finished their MSc studies, i.e. who
cannot provide their MSc certificate
at the deadline, can only apply when
they are able to hand in their certifi-
cate within 4 months after the dead-
line. Physicians, veterinary surgeons
and pharmacists should have passed
their state examinations.
At the deadline, the applicant should
not have been working on his/her
project for more than 6 months. BIF
encourages applicants to apply for
a fellowship when they are about to

begin their PhD work; preliminary
project results are not expected from
applicants. The beginning of the PhD
project is considered by BIF to be:
• the date of the final degree ex-
amination (e.g. BSc, MSc, Di-
ploma, Licenciatura, Laurea) on
the official certificate if the ap-
plicant continues to work in the
same research group; or
• the month of arrival at the lab-
oratory in which the PhD pro-
ject is pursued if the applicant
changes his/her research group,
irrespective of the project he/she
starts to work on.
In other cases, i.e. when participat-
ing in MSc/PhD programmes or grad-
uate schools without an official final
examination prior to the PhD project,
please contact us.
If a laboratory presents 2 candidates
for a PhD fellowship at the same ap-
plication deadline, only one of them
can receive a fellowship. This is why
we would highly recommend that
candidates from the same laboratory
apply at different deadlines.

Fees and Assistantship
SNU provides attractive financial
assistance in the form of tuition and
hostel fee waivers (100% and 70%,
respectively), and a substantial As-
sistantship of Rs. 50,000/- per month
(for the first 2 years) and Rs. 55,000/-
per month (for the next 2 years) to at-
tract the best candidates.
In addition to these amounts, a se-
curity deposit (refundable on exit) of
Rs. 75,000/- will be payable in the
first semester as Rs. 15,000/- monthly
instalments for 5 months (15,000×5 =
75,000) from the monthly stipend.

PhD Programmes in the University
are offered by the Faculty of Technol-

Eligibility Criteria: For Ph.D.

Procedure for Admission

distribution of available seats, criteria

admission for Ph.D. have to ap-
ply in a prescribed proforma. On
the receipt of applications, an en-
trance test will be conducted for
the eligible candidates irrespec-
tive of number of applications
received, which will be followed
by an interview by a Departmen-
tal Research Committee consist-
ing of the 1) Dean of the faculty
concerned, 2) Head of the De-
partment(s)/ Area 3) probable

Attendance Requirement : A re-
search scholar, who is pursuing
course-work as a part of his Ph. D.
Programme, is expected to have full
(100%) attendance in each course.
However, a maximum of 30% attend-
ance may be condoned by the Dean,
Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Re-
search for genuine reasons
Course work Requirement : The
course work shall be treated as prereq-
uisite for Ph.D. preparation. A mini-
mum of four credits shall be assigned
to one or more courses on Research
Methodology, which could cover are-
as such as quantitative methods, com-
puter applications, research ethics and
review of published research in the
relevant field, training, fieldwork, etc.
Other courses shall be advanced lev-
el courses preparing the students for
Ph.D. degree.
The Department where the scholar
pursues his research shall prescribe
the course(s) to him based on the rec-
ommendations of the Research Advi-
sory Committee.
All candidates admitted to the Ph.D.
programmes shall be required to com-

However, if the student is not in a
position to complete the course work
in the prescribed time limit as above,
due to genuine reasons, may file an
appeal and on the recommendation
of the RAC, the Director General

will lead to cancellation of admission.
The course work result including

minimum CPI 6.00 in order to be el-

After successfully completing the
course work, within three months,

Introduction
The CSIR-Institute of Genomics and
Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB) in-
vites applications from bright young
people from varied backgrounds with
strong motivation and great academ-
ic qualifications to pursue research
in the frontier regions of modern bi-
ology resulting in a PhD degree. The
wide interdisciplinary research areas
are genomics and molecular medi-
cine, genome informatics and struc-
tural biology, systems and chemical
biology, respiratory disease biology
and environmental biotechnology.
Eligibility
Masters degree (M.Sc/M.Tech/M.
Pharm) with at least 60% (or equal
in CGPA) in almost any branch of
Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Chem-
istry/Physics/Mathematics/Computer
Science or allied subjects with a par-
ticular interest in Biology. B.Tech (in
Biological Sciences or other branch-
es with a particular interest in Biol-
ogy)/B.Pharm/B.E./MBBS applicants
with at least 60 percent (or equal in
CGPA) can also apply. Along with
this, all candidates must also have got
at least 60 percent (or equal in CGPA)
in their XIIth standard board exam.
Both the standards are relaxed for SC/
ST/OBC (non-creamy) candidates to
a minimum of 55 percent in the high-
est qualifying examination and at the
XIIth standard board exam. Candi-
dates that are awaiting results for its
top qualifying exams are permitted to
appear, but their admission is subject
to clearing all of the eligibility criteria
at the time of admission.
