Q1. The following are scores obtained by a class of 21, when the appeared for an
examination in S1.

32 15 42 27 15 18 23 34 38 12 36 32
41 3 38 36 21 22 28 14 4

Use the above data and create a stem and leaf diagram. [2]

Obtain the median and the quartiles from the distribution. Draw a box and whisker plot
and comment on the skewness of the distribution. [3]

How can one identify an outlier in the distribution? [1]

Q2. The following data shows the information collected from 22 people of their ages.

Gender Number Mean/years Standard

deviation/years
Men 10 45 2.5

Women 12 35 1.2

Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the whole group of people. [5]
Q3a. Rainfall in the month January is such that the probability that a rainy day is
followed by a rainy day is 0.4, but the probability that a dry day is followed by a rainy
day is 0.1. Given that it rained on the first of January, draw up a probability tree diagram
to show the possibilities for the 2nd and the 3rd of January. [2]

b. Find the probability that it rained on the 3rd January. [2]

c. Given that it rained on the 3rd January, find the probability that it rained on the 2 nd
also. [2]
Q4. A discrete random variable can only take the scores of 0, 1, and 2. The probability
associated with getting 0, 1 and 2 is po, p1 and p2 respectively and that the mean and the
variance is 4/3 and 5/9 respectively. Find the values of po, p1 and p2. [5]

Q5a. Calculate the number of ways of selecting a four-letter word from the word
BIOLOGY? [3]
5b.An 8-seater, has two rows of 4-seats, one on the shady side and one on the sunny
side. 8 people are to be seated, Carl and Cedric want to sit on the sunny side, Elvis and
Freddy want to sit on either side, one on the shady side and one on the sunny side.
Calculate the number of ways of arranging the 8 people in the 8-seater. [3]

5c. There are 3 women and six men, calculate the number of ways in which
(i) All the women are not together [2]

(ii) No one woman is with another [2]

(iii) Hence, exactly two women are sitting together [3]

6. The students of The City School (PAF Chapter) were being surveyed and it was found
that the probability that they were having the common cold was 0.1.

a. Out of a class of 25 students, what would be the probability that at least one student
has the common cold. [2]

b. What should have been the minimum class size, for the probability that at least one
student to have a common cold is to exceed 0.99. [3]

It was later discovered that the probability, a student from the school had an eye
infection was 0.05. It is given that this probability is independent of having the common
cold.
c. Calculate the least number of students that need to be diagnosed for the probability
that a particular child with both the common cold and the eye infection is to exceed
0.99. [3]
d. Determine, using a suitable approximation, that from a group of 522 A-level students
in The City School (PAF Chapter), more than 40 students have the common cold. [3]

7. The random variable X follows a normal distribution with mean as  and standard
deviation . It is given the p( X > 220) = 0.01 and the p( X < 175) = 0.1.
a. Calculate the values of  and . [3]

1 2 4 5 5 8

2 1 2 3 7 8

3 2 2 4 6 6 8 8

4 1 2
Key : 3|2 represents a score of 32 [2]

Q1 = 15, Q2 = 27 and Q3 = 36

Negatively skewed [3]

It will not occur in this distribution as it has to be 1.5(Q3 – Q1) beyond Q3 and before
Q1.
[1]
2.  xm = 450  xw=336

mean of group = (450 + 336) / 22

= 37.5
x2 for men = (2.52 + 452)10 = 20312.5

x2 for women = (1.22 + 352)12 = 14717.28

so  =  (20312.5 + 14717.28)/22 – 37.52 =13.6 [5]

b. 0.16 + 0.06 = 0.22 [2]
c. 0.16/0.22= 8/11 [2]
4. po +p1 +p2 =1, p1 + 2p2= 4/3, p1+ 4p2 = 7/3

p1 = 1/3 , p2 = ½, and p0 = 1/6. [5]
