Ecumenical School Inc. must preferred to choose a strand. This study utilizes descriptive method
of research to determine the must preferred strand. The researcher conducted a questionnaire,

the respondent preferred taking ABM strand while the another 50% preferred taking HUMSS
strand. Through descriptive method was used by the researcher to describe the variable of the
study. The main goal of the researcher is to help the Grade 10 students to choose their strand that
they really want.
Introduction

Background of the study

Students in the Philippines must now should pass through two divisions in high school, such
as junior and senior, for them to earn a full-fledged diploma. In choosing a strand, suitability to
the interest of the students is given importance. Kuh, Kinzie, Schuh, Whitt, and associates (2005)
advised there is no single blueprint for student success. Students must know what strand they
really want to choose. (Pascual, 2015) stated that students first consideration in choosing career
college. Students must know what strand will be suitable to their course that they will pursue in
college that can fit to their abilities so that it will not be hard for them to choose the right career.

According to (Koech and his Colleague, 2016) the students social interactions with teachers,
parents, and peers affect the students career choice. Students affects the decision making in
choosing their strand, influenced by their interest in life, parents occupation and peers therefore
students affect their career choice. Students must give importance in choosing a strand so that in
the future the students will be successful.

Choosing a career path can help us set professional goals and develop a strategy for getting
what we want to be. Choosing a career path can help you make other important life decisions.
Researchers can site their self to look far into the future at your ultimate objectives.

Related Review Literature

Proposed and tested a model in an attempt to explain career indecision in 834 French-
Canadian college students. Factors considered in their model include parent role, self-efficacy,
and peer role. (Guay and co-workers, 2003).

Students’ first consideration in choosing career path to pursue is the availability of work after
college. (Pascual, 2014).

Concluded that the students’ social interactions with teachers, parents, and peers affect the
students’ career choice.(Koech and his colleagues, 2016).

A study conducted in Antipolo, Rizal, Philippines, showed that gender, average monthly
income, school preference, occupation of the head of the household, and the average scholastic
ratings are associated to the career choice of Grade 9 students.(Abarro, 2016).

The three most important motivators of students in choosing a career are good salary, stable
job, and low stress. Some researchers studied factors that may affect the career decision making
specific to the field of study. (Alexander, 2010).

Showed that students’ personal choice with parental support affects the level of interest in
pursuing maritime program.(Aguado and co-workers, 2015).

Identified that the type of school is the strongest predictor of why students choose STEM
courses in college. (Llenares and Deocaris, 2014).

With so many factors to consider in making a career decision, students experience career
uncertainty which affects their emotion, attitude, and behavior. (TrevorRoberts, 2006).

Used SCCT in studying students’ intention in pursuing career in sports and leisure.
(Cunningham and co-workers, 2005).

Academic achievement in mathematics was also partially described by SCCT. (Cupani et al. ,
2010)

The choice of career of the students is being influenced by some factors from the social
environment, mainly the parents as immediate family who plays an active role in choosing the
right education for their children. (Pafili&Mylonakis, 2011).

As a sign of respect for the parents and culture of the Filipinos, parents or the elderly are
being consulted first by their children because primarily they will be the one to provide the
financial support to enter in college. (Laguador, 2013).
It is important for the institution to identify the willingness of the students to pursue the
program where interest can be used as good indicator of career choice so that if problems might
occur in their academic performance related to negative attitude, the result of this study might be
useful to explain the situation. (Hirschi&Läge, 2008).

Another that establishes the influence of personality on career is of Dr. Claudia Harzer and
companions of University of Zurich, which focuses on the character strengths of an individual
and how it affects their career. (Harzer, et.al, 2012).

Investigating for career opportunities is well worth taking time. (Mind tools, 2014).

Most adolescents are pressured to perform and succeed, which experience severe stress in
meeting these expectations (Psychology.com, 2017).

In choosing a junior, senior academic track, a student should take a risk. (F. Yates, Veinotte,
and Patalano, 2003)

“I sometimes failed tests, I received bad grades from time to

time, and there were periods when I endured intense humiliation. But I persisted…”
(2004,). Dr. Watkins added, “…you have to go into the situation ready to work as
hard as you can to solve your problems and reach your goals. Never ever give up,
because giving up is the only way to guarantee that you have NO CHANCE to be
successful”

Parental support and encouragement are important factors that have been found to
influence career choice (Taylor et al, 2004).

External influences that help to shape an individual’s career choice are also influenced by
significant others through social support from peers. People around contribute a lot in one’s
decision-making (Pummel, Harwood and Lavallee ,2008).

Definition of Term

Preference- According to Merriam Webster dictionary the act of preferring : the state of
being preferred; the power or opportunity of choosing
one that is preferred

Strand- Structural elements of the curriculum designating the way in which content is
organized for the purpose of planning for student learning. The term ‘strands’ is used to indicate
the disciplines within a learning area history, geography, economics and civics under ‘social
studies’, each with its own associated goals for learning domains that group the related general
and specific learning outcomes or achievement aims and objectives within a particular learning
area or discipline

ABM-The Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand would focus on the basic
concepts of financial management, business management, corporate operations, and all things
that are accounted for. ABM can also lead you to careers on management and accounting which
could be sales manager, human resources, marketing director, project officer, bookkeeper,
accounting clerk, internal auditor, and a lot more.

HUMSS-The Humanities and Social Science strand is designed for those who wonder what is
on the other side of the wall. In other words, you are ready to take on the world and talk to a lot
of people. This is for those who are considering taking up journalism, communication arts,
liberal arts, education, and other social science-related courses in college.

STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are intertwining disciplines

when applied in the real world. The difference of the STEM curriculum with the other strands
and tracks is the focus on advanced concepts and topics.
Under the track, you can become a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a biologist, a chemist, an
engineer, a dentist, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor, and a lot more. Those who are also interested
in Marine Engineering should take this track.

GAS-General Academic Strand is great for students who are still undecided on which track to
take. You can choose electives from the different academic strands under this track. These
subjects include Humanities, Social Sciences, Applied Economics, Organization and
Management, and Disaster Preparedness.

TECH VOC-If you are really not sure if you will be able to pursue any degree after Senior
High or if you want to earn money immediately after graduation, then this track is for you. Even
without college, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood track will equip you with job-ready skills in
the future.
