Why CSS Students should opt for Environmental Science

In recent times Environmental Science has attained pivotal position the world over. The
Environmental matters are at the center of the political and economic areas and at the
top of the developmental agenda of every country in the world. This is the outcome of a
rising global concern about the protection of our environment. In last few centuries, the
world has witnessed a rapid but uneven economic development. The unsustainable
economic development has resulted in disastrous environmental crises such as
environmental pollution, climate change and depletion of resources and loss of
biodiversity. The world is faced with the challenge of devising innovative development
strategies to deal with the complexities of environmental deterioration and economic
development. Thus, environmental debate has become talk of the town. Seeing the
applicability and significance of the subject, FPSC has included the Environmental
Science in its recent regrouping of optional subjects for CSS aspirants. Following points
will surely help the aspirants to get insight of the benefits and advantages for opting
Environmental Science:

1. Importance of Environmental Science as an optional subject needs no elucidation

as it will help the students to understand man- environment relation.
2. As environmental science is purely a scientific discipline which has stepped in
the ladder of optional subjects as new rung.Beacuse of its nature/contents it can
be hoped that the subject will be high scoring. CSS-2016 result has already
corroborated this fact.
3. Being an easy subject, the students who have conceptual mindset will have
maximum chances to score high in it. Further its questions require pin-point and
focused answers rather than extensive writing.
4. Moreover, many of its course contents overlap with other subjects e.g. English
Essay, General Science & ability/Current Affairs and Geography.
5. The subject has the capacity to trigger the thoughts of the aspirants to ponder
over issues which are closely linked with national and international policies like
Water Crisis, Energy Conservation, Saving Biodiversity, Green Politics, Solid
Waste Management and Sustainable Development. Hence, it will breed
innovative and pragmatic solutions to these sweltering problems.
6. The students, who are keen to opt it, will surely save their precious time as it will
discourage cramming and induce learning by heart. Once a crystal clear concept
resides in the mind of a student, he/she will have least chances to forget in the
exam.
7. Course contents of the Environmental Science are very interesting and appealing
to the students. Topics like Global Warming, Climate Change, Environmental
Pollution, Environmental Governance, Sustainable Development, Conservation
of World Flora and Fauna, excite the curiosity and thoughtfulness among the
aspirants.
8. Syllabus of the Environmental Science is very short. It has only 8 chapters, most
of which are general in nature. After preparation of General Science and
Geography, only a few chapters will need attention of aspirants because module
4 of Geography and module 1 and module 3 of General science and Ability
significantly overlap with the syllabus of Environmental Science.

Note: the subject remained top scorer in CSS-2016, one DMC recorded 92 marks as
highest, whereas the average remained in bracket of 70-80.
