CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL BASIS

II.I Definition of Vocabulary

According Soedjito (2009: 24) vocabulary or vocabulary is interpreted as :

1. All wods contained in language

2. The wealth of words owned by a speaker or writer.

3. Words used in a field of science.

4. List of words arranged like a dictionary and brief and practical explanations.

Whereas the vocabulary expressed by Richards, Platt and Webber (1985) is a set of
lexemes which include single words, compound words, and idioms. Meanwhile Valette (1977)
suggests that vocabulary is a word or group of words that have certain meanings. From the
explanation above, it can be concluded that vocabulary is words that have a meaning possessed
by humans to be used in language and communication.

II.II Types of vocabulary

According to Hurlock (1978: 187) children learn two types of vocabulary namely general
vocabulary and special vocabulary. General vocabulary consists of words that can be used in a
variety of different situations. Special vocabulary consists of specific meaning words that are
only used in certain situations. Hurlock (1978: 188) suggests types of vocabulary, namely:

1. General vocabulary

General vocabulary consists of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

a. Noun

The first word used by children is a noun, generally one-word words are taken from the
favorite chattering sound.
b. Verb

After children learn enough nouns to mention names and objects around them, they
begin to learn new words especially those that describe actions such as "give", "take" or "hold".

c. Time vocabulary

Usually children aged 6 or 7 years know the meaning of morning, afternoon, summer and
rainy season.

d. Vocabulary

Children aged 4 or 5 years start naming coins according to their size and color.

e. Popular greeting vocabulary

Most children aged 4 to 8 years especially boys use popular sayings to express emotions
and together with peers.

2. Special Vocabulary

Special vocabulary consists of color vocabulary, number vocabulary, time vocabulary,

money vocabulary, popular speech vocabulary, and vow vocabulary.

a. Color vocabulary

Most children know the name of the basic color at 4 years of age. How much they will
learn other color names depends on learning opportunities and their interest in color.

b. Total vocabulary

In the Stanford-Binet intelligence scale, children aged 5 years are expected to be able to
count three objects and are expected to be able to count 3 objects and at the age of 6 years are
expected to understand the words "three", "nine", "five" to count seeds.

c. Time vocabulary

Usually children aged 6 or 7 years know the meaning of morning, afternoon, summer
and rainy season.
d. Vocabulary

Children aged 4 or 5 years start naming coins according to their size and color.

e. Popular greeting vocabulary

Most children aged 4 to 8 years especially boys use popular sayings to express emotions
and together with peers.

f. Oath Vocabulary

Oaths, especially by children are used starting at school age to state that he is already
big, realizing his low feelings, affirming his manhood and attracting attention.

II.III Mastery of vocabulary

Vocabulary mastery is very important in language, the richer the vocabulary possessed by
a person is the greater a person's skills in language (Tarigan, 1989). Fahrudin and Jamaris (2005)
suggest that vocabulary mastery ability is divided into two groups, namely: receptive and
productive vocabulary mastery.

1. Receptive mastery is a process of understanding what is spoken by others, receptive is

interpreted as passive mastery.
2. Productive mastery is the process of communicating ideas, thoughts, feelings through
linguistic forms.

Mastery of vocabulary in activities and daily life has a very large role, because one's thoughts
can only be clearly understood by others if expressed using vocabulary. Furthermore,
Pustejovsky in Fahrudin and Jamaris (2005: 12) suggests that one's language capacity is a
reflection of his ability to classify and show the meaning of certain words. As well as in English
in the business world. Understanding the vocabulary is necessary. Therefore every human being
must understand the true use of vocabulary
