CHAPTER I
The Problem and Its Setting
Introduction
Mathematics is one of the hardest subjects in school, which is the reason owning a

graphing calculator appears to be a need for understudies based on the article of Amit

Chowdhry (October 22, 2014), a tech enthusiast, born in Ann Arbor and educated at

Michigan State. He also stated that be that as it may, imagine a scenario in which you

could utilize your cell phone to explain conditions by pointing the camera at the issue in

your course book as opposed to utilizing a graphing calculator that is the thought behind

PhotoMath. PhotoMath is a free versatile application that can peruse and understand

scientific articulations utilizing your cell phone camera continuously.

According to Amit Chowdhry (October 22, 2014), the application may seem like

it is basically helping children cheat, yet the application additionally gives a well-ordered

guide appearing every one of the issues are comprehended. The well-ordered guide is

gainful to understudies that don't approach a mentor and battle with tackling math issues.

Guardians can likewise utilize the PhotoMath application to refresh their memory when

instructing math to their children.

According to Amit Chowdhry (October 22, 2014), “PhotoMath currently supports

basic arithmetic, fractions, decimal numbers, linear equations and several functions like

logarithms. New math is constantly added in new app releases,” says the depiction of the

PhotoMath application on iTunes. The PhotoMath application utilizes optical character

recognition (OCR) innovation to peruse the condition and figures the appropriate

responses inside seconds. There is a red casing in the PhotoMath application that

you need to use to catch the condition.

PhotoMath's capacity to peruse math issues has its impediments. It can peruse

printed message so your written by hand notes can't be understood by the application.

When Chowdhry tried out PhotoMath on a request of tasks condition, the application

continued mixing up the "X" variable as the duplication image. The red edge likewise

causes restrictions in light of the fact that there may not be sufficient dispersing between

two separate math issues in the course reading to catch the condition that you need.

guardians educated and occupied with their kids' training, and furnishes teachers and

heads with ahead of schedule and moment ready frameworks for scholastic tasks and

educational programs modifications. In this paper, the PhotoMath Application serves the

objective of virtual instructing.

3. 5 Benefits of Using Mobile Apps in Education

Roy. S / August 26, 2017
In these changing times, students are progressively determined towards utilizing a

cell phone for each reason. A cell phone they call it. The world is at the fingertips and a

student can gain admittance to any data from anyplace. This diminishes the opportunity

of visiting a library and hunting down the information. A cell phone consequently can be

utilized for various such purposes. Each versatile application has a remarkable

component which offers its very own arrangement of administrations.

Nowadays, students are commonly attached to online studying. This is where library

apps and book search apps come into the picture. These applications make it simple for

the students to look through the suitable investigation material in the versatile

application. It keeps them closer to the examination material and encourages them in

isolating their contemplating materials over the web.

There are many education ERP organizations in India that gives school management

1. Using Mobile Technologies for Mathematics: Effects on Student Attitudes
and Achievement
Fabian, K. Topping, K. & Barron, I. / 23 February 2018
The use of technology in mathematics education has been featured by analysts in

the course of recent decades. In the US, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

(2000) considered innovation as "essential in teaching and learning mathematics" (p. 3).

Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence (Education Scotland n.d., p. 40) noticed that "use of

technology in appropriate and effective ways” " considers learning encounters that

advance delight in science. In a study of science explore in the United States in the course

of recent years, Cheung and Slavin (2013) found that innovation created a constructive

outcome on understudies' accomplishment in contrast with customary techniques. In any

case, they additionally demonstrated that impacts shifted by the kind of instructive

innovation utilized.

Mobile technologies have been increasing more extensive acknowledgment in

training as of late. School and government level activities have revealed these

innovations in the classroom (West 2012). Potential advantages of utilizing

versatile advancements for learning include: encouraging learning crosswise over

settings, encouraging logical learning, and giving personalization in both individual and

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 17

cooperative situations (Cochrane 2010). These possibilities influence mobile technology

to appear a perfect device for learning science.

Mobile technologies have provided various approaches to learning: connecting

with students in contextualized learning conditions utilizing mobile devices worked in

sensors (Tangney et al. 2010); utilizing the cell phone to diary math learning (Project

Tomorrow 2011); and interfacing students through cell phones and online networking

(Roberts and Butcher 2009). Crompton and Burke's (2015) study of versatile learning in

science demonstrated that there is a developing enthusiasm for portable innovation

adequacy, with 75% of 48 considers announcing positive learning results.

2. Analysis of Learning Outcomes from Mobile Mathematics Applications

Bitter, G. & Allen / January 2015
Studies have observed learning results to be decidedly influenced by the

utilization of math applications. The investigations have been directed utilizing numerous

distinctive blends of kinds of cell phone, sort of math application, learning setting, and

kind of understudy. Portable advances are incredible and successful for correspondence,

joint effort, inventiveness and critical thinking in the math classroom. Advanced

instruments utilized in the arithmetic classroom will be recognized in time, and an

assortment of other online devices will be exhibited in issue-based conditions for the

instructing and learning of math. Math applications were found to improve learning

results, yet additionally to expand understudy commitment among understudies with

passionate aggravations (Haydon, et al., 2012) (Devlin, 2013) (Bitter and

Meylani, 2013). Understudies with passionate unsettling influences experience issues

with restraint and remaining connected sufficiently long to finish school assignments

(Blood, 2010).

There are times in class where singular understudies need individual

consideration. Mathematics applications are a perfect device to give supplemental

exercises to the unattended understudies in these circumstances. The Bring Your Own

Gadget (BYOD) technique is here and they utilized in schools with restricted spending

plans, constrained IT skill, as well as constrained staff. Students are encouraged to bring

and use their personally-owned computing devices in class. Educators in such schools

could also use math apps as a supplemental activity by identifying a list of apps for

android and iOS that students are allowed to use. It is prescribed that instructors initially

exhibit how to discover and introduce each sort of application onto a gadget before the

principal use. One of the most straightforward approaches to exploit math applications is

to utilize an adding machine application. These applications can supplant, and even

enhance, standard hand-held number crunchers. For instance, one development in

computerized figuring is PhotoMath by (Microblink, 2015). With this application, you

can just float the camera of a brilliant gadget over a scientific issue, and the application

takes care of the issue. PhotoMath can calculate arithmetic expressions, fractions,

decimals, powers, roots, simple linear equations, quadratic equations, inequalities, simple

equations systems, absolute value inequalities and absolute value equations.

3. Using Math Apps for Improving Student Learning: An Exploratory Study

in an Inclusive Fourth Grade Classroom
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 19

Zhang, M. & Trussell, R. & et al., / 2015

Zhang and his co-researchers have discovered empowering proof on utilizing

math applications to improve understudy learning and close the accomplishment hole

between battling understudies and normal understudies. Earlier research has appeared

battling students profit by PC improved math mediation (Burns, Kanive, and DeGrande,

2012), however little is thought about the viability of math applications. This examination

found that utilization of math applications might be a compelling practice in giving

instructional backings to battling understudies inside general training classrooms. To

begin with, battling understudies have more opportunity to get better than run of the mill

understudies. Second, the affordances of math applications, for example, self-pacing,

prompt input, and separating complex procedures into little advances, might be

significantly progressively gainful for battling understudies. It isn't exceptional that in

customary math guidance, battling understudies can't stay aware of the pace of general

understudies (Baker, et al., 2002). In outline, there is a potential for utilizing all around

structured math applications to help battling understudies accomplish the Common Core

State Standards for Mathematics.

In additional, the student learning realizing records given by the Splash Math

application were important on the grounds that they enabled the instructor to follow

understudy advance, comprehend understudies' feeble zones, and plan guidance as needs

be. On the off chance that the pre-tests and post-tests demonstrated understudy learning

because of utilizing math applications, the learning records uncovered the procedure of

how the learning occurred. Numerous understudies in this investigation made more than

one endeavor to rehearse the issue sets to accomplish the amendment rate set by

the instructor, which was probably not going to happen in a paper and pencil condition

since it is difficult to give understudies quick input. Additionally, the consummation that

the understudies tackled a normal of 143 issues in a single class session recommends that

math applications may enable understudies to take care of a greater number of issues than

utilizing paper and pencil, as detailed in an investigation that looked at iPads and

worksheets on math abilities of secondary school understudies with passionate unsettling

influence (Haydon et al., 2012).

The purpose of this study was to examine the most representative studies of recent

years, including on the web and portable applications and devices for arithmetic just as

their impact in the instructive procedure. We exhibited some enhance applications which

are tended to by kindergarten kids to college understudies. These applications could be

utilized to improve number juggling abilities, numerosity, for charts' portrayal,

geometrical items construction, variable based math critical thinking and

numerical programming. The after effects of the investigations uncovered that on the web

and versatile learning applications persuaded the understudies, making science course

more charming and intelligent than the common educating rehearses. Crafted by the

One list is about the possible online daily activities, the other is about online

practices belong to learning and finally about math applications used by them. These lists

were put in questionnaires made in Slovakian and Hungarian language and spread both in

Hungary and Slovakia and in Transylvanian part of Romania. We obtained several

interesting results. To the question that does their professors encourage the usage of

mobile devices 40% of the respondents said yes.

It is also interesting that the over thirty-year category gave the most active

respondents and they are also the winner of the category containing respondents without

mobile devices. In our opinion, students do not know enough about the potential of

mobile devices in learning, the solution is in the hand of the teachers. Additionally, it

those said that it helps them check their work after solving the problem, 2 of those said

that it’s just like a calculator but upgraded. And the last 2 respondents disagreed

saying that the application only makes the student dependent and lazy.

3. Do you think the application leaves a negative effect on the students’

Mathematical scores? Yes/No. Explain

25 out of 30 respondents said that it leaves a negative effect on the students’

Mathematical scores if not properly used, and 4 of those said that students’ start to

depend on the application. 5 disagreed saying that it helped them a lot in solving and

seeing the solution.

4. As a student, do you recommend this application? Explain.

19 out of 30 respondents said that they will recommend the application, 11 of

those say that it helped them answer the Math activities a lot faster, 7 of those say that it

helped them understand the step-by-step procedure especially those who have difficulty

in Mathematics, 1 say that it is just like a modern calculator. 9 out 30 respondents said

that they will not recommend the application because it can add to the laziness and

dependency of the students. 2 said that they will only recommend it for homeworks and

checkings.

On the first table it shows all the scores of the 30 respondents that was selected

by the researchers. The respondents’ score on the pre-test with the use of the PhotoMath

Application and the post-test without the use of the application.

The pie graph shows the percentage of the Mathematical scores of the students

that had been affected by the PhotoMath Application. On the pre-test only 19 respondents

got a higher score which is 63.3% of the chosen population. 5 respondents got a low

score on the post-test which is 16.7% of the chosen population. And 6 respondents’

Mathematical scores were not affected at all by the PhotoMath Application, they got a

perfect score on both pre-test and post-test and that is 20% of the chosen population.

CHAPTER V

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, conclusions of the results and

the corresponding recommendations for the study. This study was taken with the general

objective of determining the use of the PhotoMath Application to the Mathematical

scores of the selected senior high school grade 11 students of Universal College of

Paranaque.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: (1) How does

the Photomath Application affects the students Mathematical scores? (2) What is the

significant relationship between the use of PhotoMath Application to the Mathematical

scores of selected Senior High School Gr. 11 students in Universal College of Parañaque?

Summary of the findings

1. All the respondents say that the PhotoMath Application made it easier for them to

solve the given Mathematical Problems.

2. 28 out of 30 respondents say that the application helped improve their Mathematical

scores while 2 out of 30 respondents disagreed.

3. 25 out of 30 respondents say that it leaves a negative effect and 5 out of 30 said that

it does not leave a negative effect to the students.

4. 19 out of 30 respondents will recommend the PhotoMath Application and 2 out of 30

respondents will only recommend the application for homework and checking

purposes only. 9 out of 30 respondents will not recommend the Photomath

Application.

5. 63.3% had a higher score on the pre-test while 16.7% got a higher score on the post-

test and 20% were not affected at all by the PhotoMath Application.

Conclusion

Based on the findings derived from this study, the following conclusions were

drawn:

1. How does the Photomath Application affects the students Mathematical scores?

Based on the data that was gathered from the respondents, the PhotoMath

application helped the students in solving the problems and in checking their answers.

The use of PhotoMath Application is very easy and convenient for the students. However,

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 34

some were reluctant because the application can cause for the students to become lazy

and dependent, and that if not used properly, the student’s scores will be affected

negatively.

2. What is the significant relationship between the use of PhotoMath Application to the

Mathematical scores of the selected SHS Gr. 11 students in Universal College of

Parañaque?

Based on the data that was gathered by the researchers, there is a significance

relationship between Photomath Application and the Mathematical scores of the students

because the 63.3% of the respondents got higher scores when they used the application

on their test that was given by the researchers which is higher than 16.7% of the

respondents who got lower scores because of not using the Photomath Application during

their test, and the scores that was not affected by the PhotoMath Application neither on

the pre-test and post-test is 20%.

Recommendations

Recommendations and suggestions are offered, based on the research results and

findings so with the help of the researchers’ study and based on findings the researchers

can give the following:

1. The PhotoMath Application makes the solving of the Mathematical problems

easier. It can be used for checking your answers and seeing the steps on how you

got the answer.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 35

2. The PhotoMath Application is recommended to be used for homework and such

to act as a helping hand to the students.

3. For parents, the application can be used for recalling step-by-step solving process

in helping their children with their Mathematics school work.

4. For the future researchers, the researchers itself highly recommend them to focus

on their data and to pick an appropriate respondents about the research topic: An

in-depth study of the effects and advantage of using the PhotoMath Application to

the Mathematical performance of the students.
