Stitches and crochet techniques used

Slip stitch
Insert hook in next st, yo and draw through all loops.

Single crochet
Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), yo,
draw through both loops on hook.

Half double crochet

Yo, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook),
yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Double crochet
Yo, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook),
(yo, draw through 2 lps) twice.

Invisible decrease - sc2tog

Insert the hook in front loop of first st and in the front loop of
the second stitch (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw up a
loop through the first two front loops on hook, yarn over again
and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook.

Magic adjustable ring

Make a loop with your yarn leaving 3” long tail. Insert hook
in center of loop made, yo and draw up loop. Yarn over, pull
through to make your first chain. (Do not count this as your first
sc.) Continue to crochet over the loop and the yarn tail until
you have the required number of scs for your first round. For
example, if the pattern calls for 5 scs, then sc 5 times into the
ring. (Insert hook into the center of the ring and draw up loop, yo
and draw through both loops.)

When counting stitches, don’t count the one on the hook.

When you’re finished, pull the tail to close the ring.

1
Invisible finish off
To make nice, invisible finish - thread tail onto tapestry
needle. Insert needle under both loops of first st of the round.
Insert needle between back and front loop of the last st of the
last round and pull the yarn to secure.

Miss Turtle
NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, all body parts are made by
working in rounds without joining. Use a stitch marker to mark
the end of each round so you know when you are starting another
round. Move the marker up as your work progresses.

With green yarn - Ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 chs.

Fasten off leaving tail long enough to sew to hat! (Image 11)

Assembling and finishing
Pin all the parts together following placement instructions for
each body part and see how they fit together. This will give you a
feeling for where you’re going.

Attach eyes
Attach eyes 16 sts apart, between Rnds 13 and 14. Sew them
using a long needle and yellow yarn. Insert the needle through
back of head at the bottom (leaving tail for securing), coming out
on the spot where the first eye should be, through the eye, back
through the same spot and then coming out where the second eye
should be (Image 13), through the eye and then back to the bot-
tom of the head - the needle should come out on exactly same
place as where you inserted it.

Image 13 Tie a strong knot or even better tie a surgeon’s knot. To make a
surgeon’s knot, make a knot as usually, but loop the yarn one
more time before tightening. Hide ends inside the head.
Hide the beginning tail inside the head with tapestry needle.

Attach arms
Sew arms to body (Image 14) as follows:
With long tapestry needle and yellow yarn, leaving long tail for
securing, insert the needle into the top, inner side of the arm
(point a) and through to the outside. Insert needle one stitch
away from the place it came out (point b), back through the
Image 14 arm, through the body (between Rnds 27 and 28 of the body) and
through the second arm to the other side (point c). On the way
back, again take the needle one stitch away from the place it came
out (point d), through the arm (Image 15) and again through the
body.

Take two yarn ends and knot them together. Use at least 2 tight
knots. Go several times through the body with yarn ends to secure
and to hide them. Cut off excess yarn.

Image 15
7
Embroider mouth
With red, embroider mouth between Rnds 13 and 15 of the head.

Make one big horizontal stitch and then one small vertical stitch
to shape the yarn into smiling curve.

Insert the needle at the back of the head, leaving tail for
securing, coming out on the spot where the left edge of the mouth
should appear (point 1), insert the needle 6 sts apart to make the
Image 16 right edge of the mouth (point 2), coming out in the middle of
the mouth and one row down (point 3). (Image 16) Insert needle
again in the same spot but this time above the red yarn, holding it
in place and again through the head - the needle should come out
on exactly the same place as where you inserted it.

Knot the ends together and hide them inside the head!

Attach shell
Using red yarn and tapestry needle sew Rnd 14 of the Shell to the
Image 17 - Attaching shell
back of the body, leaving the ruffle to freely frame the shell.
(Image 17) Sew it over Rnds 25 and 45 of the body. Sew two
thirds, stuff and finish sewing.

When stuffing don’t push too much polyfil into the bottom part of
the shell. The bottom and the bottom part of the shell should form
flat surface. (Image 18)

IMPORTANT: The ruffle you made with Rnds 15 and 16 forms

the top edge of the shell and should be turned upwards. Turning
the ruffle down would make it impossible for the turtle to sit.
Image 18

Attach legs
TIP: Pin the legs first to find the best position so the turtle is
stable and able to sit on its own. Sewing it one row up or down
can make a difference.

Using yarn ends and tapestry needle whipstitch the last round of
the leg to the body. Sew bottom part of the leg between Rnds 42
and 43 and top part between Rnds 36 and 37 of the body. Sew
halfway, stuff and finish sewing. (Image 19)
