1. Rationale: Why is this lesson relevant at this time with these students?
- Students are visiting their local fire station as part of their community unit. They will meet
some local community helpers, see the tools that firefighters use and hear about a
firefighter’s roles and responsibilities.

- I can meet a local community helper and listen to their roles and responsibilities.

3. Lesson Development
CONNECT:
1. State learning intentions “I can meet a local community helper and listen to their roles and
responsibilities.
2. I will have students gather on the carpet so I can review expectations:
~Stay together
~Respectfully listen to the speaker
~Raise your hand if you have a question
3. I will ask students to use the bathroom if they need to.
4. I will give parents their list of students.
5. We will leave by 8:50
PROCESS:
6. Arrive at the Fire Hall and follow directions 9am-11am
TRANSFORM:
7. Arrive back at the school just after 11am
8. Review the field trip while having a snack
9. Ask students to share their favourite part of the trip.
PLAN B
10. If there is an emergency call out and the trip cancelled, we will watch a short video about
firefighters and think of things we would like to know about firefighting. Then we will watch a
short video about firefighters and think of things we would like to know about firefighting.
Hopefully we will be able to reschedule.
11. If the trip is cut short due to an emergency call out, we will walk back to the school as long
as the weather is fair.
