Foundations of Algebra class is a year-long course that will give you the opportunity to build a
stronger foundation for future success in math and other high school courses.
Foundations of Algebra will provide many opportunities to revisit and expand
your understanding of foundational algebra concepts, will employ diagnostic
means to offer focused interventions, and will incorporate varied instructional
strategies to prepare you for required high school courses. This course will
emphasize both algebra and numeracy in a variety of contexts including number
sense, proportional reasoning, quantitative reasoning with functions, and solving
equations and inequalities.
In the first semester, modules 1 to 4, and Units 1 and 2 of Algebra 1 will be
taught. Units 3 to 6 of Algebra 1 will be taught in the second semester. Since this
course is spilt up by the summer, it is very important that students do not forget
concepts taught to them during the 2018 – 2019 school year. To help students continue to
improve their math skills, students are asked to complete a total of 36 Ascend Math lessons over
their 9-week summer break. This averages out to 4 lessons a week. This is very doable since
each lesson (video, practice, and post assessment) takes about 20 – 30 minutes to complete. If
you do not have internet, computer, or phone access at home, please use the free resource at your
local library. Most public libraries are open from 10 am – 9 pm, but please check the website of
your nearest library to get exact times and holiday closures. I have included a calendar to help
students stay on top of completing this assignment. When students return in the fall, an Ascend
Math summer program grade will be given to students. It is very important that if you think
your student might be returning to South Cobb in the fall that they complete this assignment. No
late work will be accepted since the purpose of this assignment is for students to focus a little
on math every week. This paper and the lessons on Ascend Math are due August 1, 2019.
Reminders will be sent throughout the summer and the day before the assignment is due. If you
have not signed up for reminders, please use the information above so that you too can receive
reminders throughout the summer.
