CLASS/ PROFILE: 6th grade - It is a mixed and diverse class; while some students have a very good English level, other students can still
be considered beginners. On the other hand, the students in this class are very energetic and have the tendency to become noisy and restless
during the classes. Therefore, a dynamic teaching approach represents the best choice when it comes to them.
LENGTH: 50 minutes.
1. Recognise the regular verbs used in the Past Simple tense and to understand the affirmative form of the Past Simple regular verbs.
2. Spell correctly the affirmative forms of the regular verbs used in the Past Simple tense.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS
- With students:
Some students might find it difficult to apply the spelling rules of the past simple regular verbs and to associate them with the
right pronunciation.
SOLUTIONS
Teacher will give as many examples of Past Simple regular verbs as necessary.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T greets Ss and asks them how are they.
T asks if anyone is absent.
T asks Ss “How are you felling today?” in order to review the feelings
and emotions that they have learned. Suggested answers: “I’m felling/
I’m happy/ relaxed/ sad.” T asks more questions: “Does anyone feel
curious today? What about surprised? But angry? Maybe bored?”.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T announces the title of the new lesson: Past Simple of regular verbs
and translates it into Romanian.
T asks Ss what verbs are used in Romanian to express past events.
T explains that Past Simple can express a very recent event, such as in

the time expressions.
AIMS To draw students’ attention to the target language of the new unit.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T invites Ss to watch a short video about a boy who took his driving
test for the second time this morning. T asks Ss to pay attention to the
way in which Past Simple verbs are being used.
MATERIALS Transcript
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T gives Ss the transcript of the video and asks them to underline in
pairs all the Past Simple regular verbs.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T asks Ss to open their notebooks and writes on the blackboard all the
verbs from the transcript in two columns: Past Simple form/ Infinitive
form.
T explains to Ss that there are five important rules that the Past Simple
regular verbs follow:
4) If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you take off the y and add
-ied.
5) But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed. (play -
played)
T draws Ss’ attention upon the fact that there are three kinds of
pronunciation: /d/, /t/ and /ɪd/ and asks them to study the table she gave
them.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T gives Ss some colourful balloon on which she has written the base
form of some regular verbs and the Ss who catch them run to the
whiteboard and write the Past Simple form of the verb.
ACTIVITY 7: ASSESSMENT
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY T revises the main aspects of the new lesson together with Ss: how do
we recognise regular verbs and which are the spelling rules.
T asks Ss if they liked the lesson.
T gives Ss positive feedback for their involvement during the class.
T assigns homework: Exercises 1 and 2, page 52.
T greets Ss and wishes them a nice day.
