3. SAFETY INFORMATION & LOLER CONSIDERATIONS

1) Can be considered to be a routine operation, however careful

co-ordination between the Roustabout crew and Drill crew is
required, there for the entire Roustabout crew and the crane
operator should attend the toolbox talk and be familiar with the
risk assessment and lifting plans. The risk assessment and lifting
plan should consider the work activities on the catwalk, pipe
deck and drill floor.

2) Keep mousehole cover in place when not in use.

3) Keep the 'V' door area clear of obstruction.

4) Install 'V' door gate when access is not required.

5) Keep catwalk clear and obstruction free. Limit the amount of pipe laid
out on the catwalk so as to avoid joints accidentally falling off
the catwalk.

6) Should the pin end of a joint inadvertently come off the catwalk whist
being picked up with the drill floor tugger, then shut the job down
and re- assess the situation. Utilise the crane to restore the joint
to the catwalk.

7) The lifting cap to be used is of the correct type and is fully

certified.

8) A competent person should carry out pre-use inspection of all

lifting equipment and accessories. Ensure colour code is current
and the SWL is adequate for the task.

9) Signals between the tugger operator and the crew are confirmed.

10) Appropriate personal work gear is worn.

11) Avoid the central floor area when the joint is being pulled up the 'V'
door.

12) When manoeuvring the joint into the mousehole, care must be
taken so as to avoid trapping the joint between the descending
blocks and the floor.

12) Baile Hooks to be tied back after use.

14) The Driller has overall responsibility for work activities on the
drill floor.

15) Work activities on the pipe deck and catwalk is supervised by the
Roustabout Pusher.

16) Pipe should not be rolled on or off the catwalk without

permission from the Rig Superintendent.

Hooks of any type should not be used for any lifting

operation using Drillfloor winches.

4. PROCEDURES

4.1 PREPARATION

THREE/ FOUR MEN ARE INVOLVED (SEE 4.1.9)

1) Hold a toolbox talk and complete the TRIC card, ensure that all
crewmembers are aware of the risks and the controls put in place
to mitigate them, also that they are familiar with the lifting plan.

2) Select the appropriate pipe drift.

3) Attach the lifting cap securely to the tugger line. (Where possible
utilise a swivel

4) Remove the mouse hole cover.

5) Open the 'V' door gate.

6) Secure one end of the tailing rope to the anchor point and run the
rope across the top of the 'V' door and through the movement
restrictor.

7) Check the elevators are of the correct size and type and are
operationally sound.

8) Install a hobble.

9) Have the correct dope brush and dope on the floor.

10) Place one man to operate the tugger with left hand and control
the tailing rope with right hand. This method is acceptable with
tubulars weighing less than 21.9lbs per ft i.e. 5 1/2" Drillpipe size.
The tailing in of any tubulars in excess of this weight will be done
so using a 4th man dedicated to the tailing in rope.

11) Place one man ready to remove the protector.

12) Place one man on catwalk ready to install lifting cap into tubulars.

13) Two men to hook on Baile Hook to elevator.

4.2 PERFORMANCE

1) Pass the drift down to the Roustabout on the catwalk.

2) Lower the lift cap with the tugger until it reaches the box end of
the pipe on the catwalk.

(It may be necessary to pull the line off the tugger while guiding
the cap down the 'V' door.)

3) The Roustabout now inserts the drift into the joint then makes up
the lifting cap in the joint.

(Tighten up the lift cap only with a bar.)

4) Upon being given the signal by the Roustabout, the man on the
tugger now raises the joint up the 'V' door.

(Care must be taken to ensure the pin end travels along the
catwalk. Remember should the pin end come off the catwalk,
then stop the job and reassess the situation, utilise the crane to
restore the joint to the catwalk).

5) When the box end is approximately five feet above the top of the
'V' door the tailing rope is pulled taught.

6) The tugger driver continues to raise the joint until the pin end is
approximately three feet above the floor where he stops it.

(Speed of ascent is dictated by rig layout and conditions.)

7) The progress of the joint towards the mousehole is controlled by

feeding the tailing rope through the friction point (restrictor).
Stop the joint about a foot short of the mousehole.

8) Now unscrew the pin end protector.

(The drift will be contained in the protector therefore care must

be taken not to drop it.)

9) Place the protector and the drift to the side of the work area.

9) Check the pin shoulder for burrs and the threads for any
abnormalities.

11) If none, grasp the joint remove the rope and centre the joint over
the mousehole.

(If damaged lay out the joint.)

12) Lower the joint into the mousehole.

13) Slacken off enough tugger line to allow the unscrewing of the
lifting cap.

14) Unscrew the cap, lift it out of the box and manoeuvre it over to
the 'V' door edge.

15) The tugger driver lowers it down to the Roustabouts.

(The rabbit is passed down to the Roustabout in the time it takes

the cap to travel.)

16) Inspect and dope the box if sound.

17) The slips are set and the elevators unlatched. (Ref. Tripping for
details.)

18) The Driller raises the blocks until the elevators are just above the
box.

19) Two men take up position behind the elevator and push on the
baile hooks manoeuvring the elevator around the joint in the

mousehole. If baile hooks are available install one hook into each
baile eye and signal Driller to commence lowering the blocks.

When a top drive is installed the tilt mechanism is used to aid the
movement and subsequently released when the joint is picked up.

20) A third man positions himself between the joint and the 'V' door
and aids this operation by pulling the horns towards him and
squeezing them together latching the elevators.

21) Signal the Driller that the elevators are latched correctly.

22) Use tailing rope out of mousehole.

23) Once raised above the mousehole, grasp the pin tool joint
between the shoulder and forearm and centre the joint for
stabbing.

The joint is made up using the same techniques laid out in

tripping in and can be referenced to there.

5. ON COMPLETION

1) Store the protectors.

2) Pull the tailing rope back to the top of the 'V' door.

3) Clean up any spillages.

3. SAFETY INFORMATION & LOLER CONSIDERATIONS

1) All lifting operations should be properly planned, appropriately

supervised and carried out to protect the safety of workers,

2) Routine lifting plans can be done using the TRIC card, however
more complex lifts, for example two cranes lifting the same load
would require a separate lifting plan.

3) Never stand under a suspended load.

4) Use tag lines in windy conditions and when the load is to be moved
out of the immediate vicinity.

5) Keep work area clean, tidy and free from obstructions.

6) Establish crane signals between the banksman and the crane driver.

7) Ensure the crane driver can see the banksman.

8) If radios are to be used select the correct channel and use standard
radio voice procedures.

9) Always stand to the 'side' of tubulars when they are being lifted.

10) Know the rated capacity of the slings in use.

11) Ensure the slings are correctly colour coded, certified and in
good condition.

12) Ensure the load to be picked up and the slinging configuration

does not exceed the rated capacity of the slings.

13) Know the rig specific rules on restriction of crane use due to weather
conditions.

14) Ensure that any lifting accessories used for securing the load are
compatible with the load taking into account any attachment
points on the load, the environmental conditions in which the
accessories will be used and their configuration of use.

15) Ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent the load, or
part of the load disintegrating while being lifted.

16) Ropes, chains or slings should only be shortened in a safe

manner.

17) Can be considered to be a routine operation, however careful co-

ordination between the Roustabout crew and drill crew is
required, there for the entire Roustabout crew and the crane
operator should attend the toolbox talk and be familiar with the
risk assessment and lifting plans. The risk assessment and lifting
plan should consider the work activities on the catwalk, pipe
deck and the drill floor.

18) Any tools, tubulars or equipment that require to be tailed in

using the crane and drawworks then a separate lifting plan will
have to be produced. An example of this would be picking up the
MWD tool.

19) The Roustabout Pusher is responsible for Supervising all work

activities on the Pipe Deck and Catwalk.

20) Tubulars of any description will not be rolled on or off the

catwalk without the Rig Superintendents permission.

4. PROCEDURE

The handling of tubulars and drilling tools with the crane incorporates
essentially the same techniques.

4.1 PREPARATION

TWO MEN AND A CRANE DRIVER ARE REQUIRED.

1) Hold a toolbox talk with all concerned including the crane driver
and utilise the TRIC card as a risk assessment. A separate lifting
plan will have to be made out when two means of lifting is used
for the same load, ensure that everyone is aware of the risks and

the controls put in place to mitigate them, also make sure that
everybody is familiar with the lifting plan.

2) A competent person should carry out a pre-use inspection of all

lifting equipment and accessories. Ensure the colour code is
current and the SWL is adequate for the task.
(Ref. CP-DOG-005 section 6.4)
.

3) The work area is clean, tidy and free from obstacles.

4) Install a set of brothers on the crane hook.

5) Ensure protectors are correctly fitted to all threads.

4.2 PERFORMING

1) Position the brothers over the middle of the pipe to be bundled.

(The pipe being laid flat on a rack.)

2) Double rap and choke the selected number of pipe with two
slings each positioned approximately five foot in from each end.
(Care must be taken to ensure the choking effect comes from the
same direction and that the slings are not crossed.) Remember
that each sling should have a SWL approximately equal to the
gross weight of the load.

3) Hook the brothers into each sling eye.

4) Step to the side. Never stand under a suspended load.

5) Signal the crane to pick up slowly. (This is done by the

designated banksman using either radio or hand signals.)

6) Observe the sling tightening on itself. (Ensure the sling does not
slip towards the centre of the pipe.)

7) Stop the crane lifting when the bundle has formed but is not fully
lifted.

8) If necessary push the sling eye back down the sling.

(This is best done with a piece of timber.)

9) Install a tag line at one end of the bundle (use a slip knot).

10) Step clear. Never stand under a suspended load.

11) Signal the crane to raise the bundle high enough to clear samson
posts or any other obstacles.

12) Bank the crane until the load is located directly over the catwalk.

13) Control the loads lateral movement with the tag line.

14) Signal to lower and land the bundle on the catwalk.

Always prepare your landing site to enable the bundles to be
landed without crushing the slings.

15) Stop the descent of the brothers when they can be easily reached.
Note: Exercise care when releasing bundle slings, as the
individual tubes are liable to roll.

16) Remove the sling eyes from the brother's hooks and lay the slings
parallel to the pipe.
(Limit the amount of pipe laid out on the catwalk so as to avoid
joints accidentally falling off the catwalk.)

17) Bank the crane to raise the brothers and position them over the next
load.

18) Take up a position on the catwalk near the bottom of the 'V' door.

19) Receive the drift from the roughneck.

20) Grasp the lifting cap as it is being lowered down the 'V' door.

21) Carry it and the drift to the selected joint.

22) Insert the drift.

23) Screw the lifting cap into the joint and tighten with a pinch bar.

24) Signal the tugger driver to raise the joint.

25) Step back from the catwalk and observe the passage of the joint
along the catwalk and up the 'V' door.

It may be necessary under certain conditions to guide the pin

end along the catwalk when the joint is being raised. When this
occurs always stand to the side of the joint and keep it at arms
length.
