INTRODUCTION

Bahulu is a traditional Brunei and Malaysian pastries similar to the Madeleine cake despite
with round shapes and different ingredients. Known as 'kuih bahulu' in the Malay language,
these are Asian madeleines found in Brunei, Singapore and also Malaysia. They are dainty
fluffy cakes made with slightly crusty outer layer but soft on the inside. It is usually served
during Eid al-Fitr as well as during the Chinese New Year.

Kuih bahulu is a traditional cake or snack usually baked in brass moulds. They usually come
in all sorts of sizes and shapes like fishes, flowers and most commonly, sea shells. As the
main ingredient is egg, kuih bahulu is sometimes known as egg sponge cake. Compared to
many western cakes, kuih bahulu is much lighter, less densed and has a subtle sweetness. That
makes it much healthier than the usual cakes we know. Making these 'kuih bahulu' may seem
simple but it is actually quite a daunting task.

The bahulu machine is designed in order to facilitate the bakers so that their task is much
more easy and fast. The bahulu machine can produce five times much more bahulu than by
baking the bahulu manually. Machines produce more work with little energy and also within a
limited time. The workers are more dedicated to their work when they make use of machines.
The workers encounter lesser fatigue and tiredness, which increase their efficiency and
dedication because only little joules of their energies are lost when working.
Figure 2: Bahulu machine

The bahulu machine consist of part such as motor, gear, shaft, frames and piston system. The
material is stainless steel. The size of tank of the machine is 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.5 m. Besides
that, the height of the frame of the machine is 1.5 m. The bahulu mixture is pour into the tank
manually. In order to pump the bahulu mixture out of the nozzle of the tank into the mould,
the workers must use a large size piston system. It can pump the mixture into the mould six at
a time in less than 10 seconds.

OBJECTIVES

i. To design a bahulu machine which can increase the production of kuih bahulu in
the traditional kuih industry.

ii. To reduce the time of production of kuih bahulu.

iii. To produce a calculation based on the parts of the bahulu machine.

CALCULATION

DISCUSSION

CONCLUSION

With great participation from the students and lecturers, all three objectives of this mini
project have been achieved – to design a bahulu machine which can increase the production of
kuih bahulu in the traditional kuih industry, to reduce the time of production of kuih bahulu,
and to produce a calculation based on the parts of the bahulu machine. In short, machine
design offers a good practical approach to the subject through a wide range of real-world
applications and examples. This indirectly enhance and encourage students to link
fundamental concepts with practical component specifications. Next, the calculation that is
involved in the bahulu machine are simple hand-lever, wheel bearings, shaft, volume of tank
and piston, bolt and extension steel tube dimension. All the data that are calculated is made
from assumption.
